Casey Anthony Trial Patricia Saylor Donna Dansey Computer Forensics November 25, 2012 Casey Anthony Case There have been many murder trials in the United States which have gripped the nation, OJ Simpson, BTK, Lee Harvey Oswald. But more shocking to the consciousness of America is the story of a child which has been killed. Such would be the case of Caylee Anthony, and the trial of Casey Anthony. In this assignment the discussion will focus on this case, exposing the much of the drama created by this case. On July 15th, 2008, two year old Caylee Marie Anthony was reported missing by her Cindy Anthony, Caylee’s grandmother. Caylee was missing from the home of Casey Marie Anthony, her mother, and …show more content…
The evidence would indicate that someone had searched the word chloroform on that computer at least 84 times around the dates of the dates when Caylee Anthony was suspected to be missing. It was later that John Bradley would discover inaccuracy of the data caused by the software, which he would to authorities. Additionally there was photographic evidence entered on the case which had been retrieved from the computer of Ricardo Morales, a former boyfriend of Casey Anthony. The picture was that of a poster which said “Win Her Over with Chloroform”. (DD, 2011). The prosecution had based much of the case on the digital evidence found on the computer that Casey Anthony used, with most of the attention given to the 84 times that the word chloroform had been searched. That evidence would later be challenged by John Bradley himself, who would change his original statement and reveal that there was only one reference found in the computer related to the search of chloroform. (Jones, 2012). Other challenges to the computer forensic evidence were provided in the case by one of the investigators, Detective Yuri Melich, who by using Net Analysis was able to determine that there was inaccuracies in the data on the Casey Anthony case, which brought into question the data itself as well as whether Casey Anthony could have been the only
The news articles did not specify whether or not this tape was actually found and analyzed, but the text did not cover the admissibility of such evidence in a trial nonetheless. The text also did not cover something that was of great importance in the Foddrill case- the problems with DNA evidence. After three searches of Russell’s home, the only blood evidence they could find was not able to be tested for DNA because it was “either inconclusive or to small to be tested” (Course 105). This type of lack of evidence is very consistent with a problem investigators often encounter during trial known as the CSI Effect- where people expect large amounts of forensic evidence and grand presentations. Oftentimes, prosecutors will bring in experts to explain the lack of evidence in order to make what little they might have count. I was personally surprised by the lack of evidence, since the testimonies of Hubbell and Fowler seemed to indicate that there was a fair amount of violence in the crime and since the crime extended over a few days at least. In conclusion of the case, the investigators were able to convince a jury that Long, Redman, and Russell were guilty despite any flaws or faults within the forensic evidence.
Twenty years later information surfaced that suggested that the evidence in the two previous trials had been tampered with. The Assistant District Attorney, with the help of Evers's widow, began compiling a new case. (Elliot Jr., pg.1)
Casey Anthony was put on trial for murder on May 24, 2011. The trial lasted six weeks, from May to July 2011. Prosecutors were seeking to give Casey Anthony the death penalty and allegedly claimed that Casey murdered her daughter so she would not have any parental responsibilities for the child. By managing chloroform and applying duct tape onto the child’s mouth, Casey Anthony murdered her own baby. Casey Anthony’s defense team tried to argue against the charges by claiming that the child had drowned on accident in the family's swimming pool on June 16, 2008. The defense contended that Casey lied about this, along with many other issues, because of a dysfunctional childhood. They claimed that she had endured sexual abuse by her father. Casey Anthony’s defense did not present any evidence however on how Caylee died, or any evidence that claimed that Casey was sexually abused as a child, but yet they still challenged every piece of the prosecution's evidence. During her trial; Casey did not testify.
The “performers” of the trial played a crucial role in the trial, the verdict and the informal perceptions of Casey Anthony. The prosecutor and defense both played contrasting roles in shaping their client/opponent legally and informally, in the media. The
On January 13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Rene Hagerman was abducted while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. A close neighbor witnessed the victim getting taken in a pickup truck and soon called the police. 2 days later of a long search Amber Hagerman was found with a slit throat in a creek. Later on, through the investigation, the police soon found out that Amber was sexually abused before getting killed. After finding Amber Hagerman’s body no trace of evidence was found. “There
It all started in 2008, when Caylee Anthony, a 2year old child went missing. The 2 year old’s mother, Casey Anthony stated to the police that the last time she has seen her daughter was when she dropped her off to the child’s babysitter. (Timeline of Casey Anthony Trial, ABC News Internet Ventures). However, things began to escalate when reporters stated that Casey didn’t report Caylee’s disappearance till a month later. At even that time, it wasn’t Casey who reported Caylee’s death; it was the grandmother, Cynthia Anthony, who was also known in this case at Cindy. (Chuck Hustmyre, Criminal
Due to the interview taking place after hours and the case not being assigned until the following day, I was unable to be present at the time of the interview. However, I have since observed a copy of that interview. The following is a summary of the forensic interview conducted that night by Megan Merrill with Deja Jones. This is a summary, not an exact transcript.
In addition, according to the interviews collected by NBC news Lawson Lamar, Florida state attorney said “We’re disappointed in the verdict today because we know the facts and we’ve put in absolutely every piece of the evidence that existed .... This is a dry-bones case. Very, very, difficult to prove. The delay in recovering little caylee’s remains worked to our considerable
Document D analysis • 1. agree with acquittal- Jose Baez, Joe Adamson….disagree- Angela Wright, Janine Gonzalez, Lawson Lamar • 2. Because the body of Caylee Anthony was found months after she had died, it was impossible to tell exactly how she died. These facts made the prosecution’s case of proving guilt much more difficult. Casey Anthony is an Ohio-born and Florida-raised woman that had a daughter named Caylee Anthony be born on August 9, 2005. In the summer of June 2008, following a major argument with her parents, Cindy and George Anthony, who were questioning her suitability as a mother figure, Casey left her parents’ home with Caylee. Over the next couple of weeks, Cindy kept reaching out to Casey concerned about both her and Caylee’s whereabouts. Every time Casey was inquired about Caylee, she would report that Caylee was out under the care of her nanny, Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez. Nothing seemed amiss until July 13, 2008 when George and Cindy received a notice that Casey’s car was currently being held in a tow yard. Upon their arrival to pick up the car,
On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony called the police saying her daughter Casey Anthony stole her car and some money. Later that same day the police received another call from the same person saying that her granddaughter Caylee Anthony had been gone for over a month. When this was heard, they knew they had a big case on their hands. The mother Casey Anthony was taken into custody and told many lies concerning the whereabouts of her daughter. The police began to investigate and found some interesting things that could very well prove Casey Anthony guilty of kidnapping and murder of her own daughter.
There is certainly a lack of direct evidence. The defense used that to their advantage and was able to paint a different picture of what happened. A speaker from the prosecution, Linda Burdick, paints the picture of Caylee Anthony living a happy life, with changes over the course of a month that led to her eventual death. For example, in the beginning of her opening statement, she discusses Caylee’s room, toys, and how she was loved. (Lohr, 2013) Then she presents Casey Anthony as a parent who wants to be freed from her responsibilities. Their claim is that Casey Anthony killed Caylee using Chloroform to make her unconscious and duct tape to suffocate her. (Lohr, 2012) They are trying to prove their case using prima facie that supports this claim. (Lohr, 2012) The information was presented in a straightforward fashion. She logically described the day-by-day changes in the life of Caylee Anthony, her grandparents, and the last time anyone saw her to a month later when she was reported missing. (Lohr,
The possibility of finding clues about where the victim might be located, taking in consideration the amount of time left, and the potential difficulty of finding such clues in a technically savvy suspect’s computer, justifies doing a search in the computer risking any other potential artifact of evidentiary value. Furthermore, when investigators believe lives are a stake, they are encouraged to act and “disregard all the other rules and do whatever is necessary to save people” (Alameda County District Attorney’s Office,
One of the most controversial and polemic trials of all times since the OJ Simpson trial was the case of Casey Anthony and the murder of her two year old daughter.
