Names, games as Goodman’s faith falling and failing him. Goodman Brown no longer can trust his faith, and consequently he feels like all of the good on the Earth is gone. The symbol of the ribbons falling show how he held both his wife Faith and his faith in God at a high level, and now that they have both fallen to the ground level, Goodman Brown can see what they really are: his wife is a sinner and his faith is a lie. This symbol enhances the story because it allows the reader to make the connection between the play on words of Faith and the ribbons. Like “Young Goodman Brown”, “The Purloined Letter” also has a symbol central to the understanding of the message. In “Young Goodman Brown”, after Goodman Brown has given up on his faith,“the whole forest was peopled with frightful sounds… as if all Nature were laughing him to scorn”(Hawthorne 331). Goodman Brown thinks of himself as a fool, so the description of nature mocking him as well, illustrates how he is feeling about himself. Goodman Brown feels as if he has been fooled, and his faith is not real. Goodman Brown is the narrator of the story, so his feelings toward him self show through his narration. The personification of the forest displays Browns confusion even more because in reality trees can not mock him, yet he feels as if they are. Through the personification of the forest, Goodman Brown's anger towards his naiveness is displayed through the description of the setting around him. Like the forest in Young Goodman Brown, the wall in “The Cask of Amontillado” also serves as a reflection of the character’s emotions. After hearing a “loud and shrill screams” from Fortunato, who is trapped in the crypt, Montresor placed his “hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs” (Poe). The fabric is described as solid which connotes strength and comfort. This reflects Montresor’s emotions because Montresor is briefly afraid of what he is doing to Fortunato, and he is looking for comfort which he finds in the setting around him. The use of setting to display the characters emotions reflects how humans are influenced by their emotions, while the use of symbols reflects how there is often a deeper meaning or a hidden message behind common things, such as names or games. The authors’ stylistic choices of symbols and setting enhance their stories and help the reader further grasp the message. and settings are all three common things that most everyone has, plays or sees. But, both Edward Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne use these common things to enhance their short stories, “Young Goodman Brown”, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Purloined Letter”. The authors create a deeper meaning behind common things by using symbols and descriptive diction in order to convey the authors’ intended message.
