The Renaissance was an extraordinary period because during this era, there is various creativity and logical events happened that helped humanism in many ways. One influential event that caught my attention during this era was Baldassarre Castiglione’s work, “The book of the Courtier”. This book helped the Renaissance period to look at different angles of life especially the role of men and women in our society. In the book, it explained about the “behavior expectations of the courtier and what his lady should do to lend a hand to her companion” (1). Castiglione’s beliefs not only influenced the Renaissance time period but also influenced our world today. In our world today, there are men who have the ideal qualities that Castiglione’s talking about. One person that I know who has some of these ideal qualities is my husband who was in the military for several years. Being in the military was his first profession. In his profession, he was not only trained to be a soldier but also to be a gentleman and be loyal to what he committed his time to. When Castiglione says that courtier need to “be both soldier trained in the bearing of arms and a scholar skilled in the liberal arts and social graces” (2), I could not agree more with him. In our society today, men contain several of the ideal qualities that Castiglione’s claiming. In the olden days, many see the women as care taker of the home. Women seemed to be worthless because they were very limited on what they can do in the society; however, that changed with the help of Castiglione’s point of view in women. He believed that women should be a “consummate hostess-charming, witty, graceful, physically attractive, and utterly feminine” (2). His belief still lingers in our society as of today. Many of the women in our society are capable of doing the same profession as the men but the women are still witty, attractive, and utterly feminine. When I was in high school, I joined the NJROTC program and I was surrounded with a lot of men in the class but that did not stop me from showing them that us women can do what men can do. Like what Castiglione’s mentioned “lady should be educated in the liberal arts in the same way as a gentlemen” (1). Education is very important for all of us because in today’s society, having an education will help you have a better life. One of my favorite in Castiglione’s work is the “behavior expectations of the courtier and what his lady should do to lend a hand to her companion” (1).
