The reader sees that throughout this story Dade avoided catching the woman and was letting her go, but then she ignored him after he asked her “why [she is] doing this to [him],”(75) and his father hired a guard. Dade was sitting on the roof and watching air force jets fly when he made a realization that he “wanted the woman to be caught… The woman was a thief,” (98). He believed that wanting the woman to be caught was a realization that the world wanted him to have, and he believed that his life then made sense. Along with changing his mind about the woman, Dade went up to his mom and blantaly told her that he's “never going to discover anything” and that and that all he has done on the roof is “look at clouds,” (113). Reading this story, these lines seem simply confusing and a bit frustrating because he is now acting like his father rather than his mother. His opinions and views changed, which then led to a shift in the story and yet again his father's actions and influence led to dades views of the woman, which are now negative rather than positive in previous parts of the
As Kennedy viewed everything happening politically in Cuba, he began to think of what America could do to help. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson attended many of the meetings and helped advise Kennedy in these conferences. After a meeting with Kennedy in early March in 1961, Johnson told news reporters, “We don’t intend to sit here in our rocking chair with our hands folded and let the Communism set up any government in the Western Hemisphere” (If U.S. 47). U.S. Senator William Fullbright of Arkansas was concerned over newspaper stories that predicted an invasion on Cuba (Schlesinger 251). If anyone in Cuba expected an attack, it would ruin the surprise attack, and the mission would have less chance for success. Fullbright wanted to let Cuba solve their problems, as long everything was contained in only Cuba (252). William Fullbright advised Kennedy and other U.S. leaders, “The Castro regime is a thorn in the flesh; but it is not a dagger in the heart” (252). Fullbright admitted to the fact that there was a problem in Cuba, but he did not view Communism as a big problem. Meetings continued through March and April, and the American people wanted to know if anything was going to be done. On April 8, Kennedy stated in a news conference, “There will not, under any circumstances, be an intervention in Cuba by U.S. armed forces” (Flaherty 94). President Kennedy did not want the American
In Contesting Castro, the author, Thomas Paterson, attempts to give reasons for what caused the disconnect between the United States and Cuba. He supports his reasoning by giving his readers many different accounts, quotes, and views from the people who were involved in the many different problems that led up to the severed relationship. After reading through the book, Paterson does an excellent job of explaining the sometimes-complex circumstances that led to the United States and Cuba not having a relationship.
Bodega killed Vidal in order for Bodega and Vera could be together. Bodega began to restore the East Harlem community to show Vera that he finally was able to have positive effects on the community. However, in reality, Vera loved Nazario, the right hand of Bodega, and that led to Bodega being murdered by Nazario so he and Vera could be together. In addition, Chino, a well-educated man, was able to get out of the violent environment, but when he found out that he was about to be a father, he decided to help Bodega in order to get a favor back from him. “Tell him I can deliver Vera...Tell him I know where she is and I can reach her. All I want from him is a two-bedroom apartment in one of his buildings. Tell him I got a kid coming and I need the extra room.” (Quinonez 54). Chino risks his freedom
In the early 1930's during Hitler's uprising, he began to sweep throughout Europe seeking out nations to conquer and add to his already growing German empire. He used the Soviets distrust of the western nations to form a temporary alliance and take over Poland. France, and Britain would soon join the battle against one of the most powerful and destructive European powers.

“First, I want to say that there will not be, under any conditions, an intervention in Cuba by the United States Armed Forces. This government will do everything it possibly can, I think it can meet its responsibilities, to make sure that there are no Americans involved in any actions inside Cuba… The basic issue in Cuba is not one between the United States and Cuba. It is between the Cubans themselves.” These words were spoken by President John F. Kennedy at a press conference on April 12, 1961, just five days before the Bay of Pigs invasion took place. Little did the American public know that in five short days, the United States would support an attempted invasion on the Cuban shore—unsuccessfully. The $46
In March 1960, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved a CIA plan to conquer Castro. The plan was to train a paramilitary force outside Cuba so they are able to perform guerrilla action, and needed 13 million dollars. Richard Bissel and Richard Helms organized the operation. Operation Mongoose had approximately 400 CIA officers who were employed full-time to carry out the mission. The project leader was Edward Lansdale and Task Force W was led by William Harvey. The Operation Mongoose headquarters was to the JM WAVE station. Castro once said, “If surviving assassination attempts were an olympic event, I would win the gold medal.” Castro’s body guards said that they counted that there was a total of 638 assassination attempts by CIA to kill Castro. In a survey they found that 90 percent of the Cuban population supported Castro and his policies. Castro started to tighten his grip over Cuba and enjoy all the powers that he had in the government. Then Castro put a ban on existing political parties, ruled all of Cuba, and said he would ruin the national unity and integrity. Castro wasn’t a really malicious person, but he was

Next, Fidel Castro attempted to appeal to the feelings of his people and Nikita Khrushchev to wage a nuclear war against the United States of America. John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev failed to take him seriously, seeming to conduct haphazard invasions. In turn, Castro worried he would “lose” Cuba and be swept under their control. To prevent this he appealed to his people by saying, “The result of aggression against Cuba will be the start of a conflagration of incalculable consequences, and they will be affected too,” he told the Cuban people, “It will no longer be a matter of them feasting on us. They will get as good as they give.” His words convinced the Cuban people that a suicide mission to destroy America was in their best interest. Castro’s arguments were not based on logic, rather, he cited the preservation of communism as priority number one. Moreover, when the United States was alerted of Cuba’s possession of missiles, and threatened Cuba he refused back down. Castro even tried to bring Khrushchev
