Unique. Geometric. Creative. A sculpture of perfect unity. These words may describe many buildings in the world, but they nearly define Gothic architecture. We pass by buildings and churches on a daily basis, that never seem to catch our eyes. They seem meaningless to us until we take the time to search through the architecture on that building. Architecture provides a great deal of detail, beauty, and uniqueness to a building. Especially, Gothic architecture, which is an extraordinary type of architecture, that thrived from the 12th century to the 16th century, in the Middle Ages. This architecture was not only created to provide beauty to the city, but to show meaning, and inform the citizens about the religion of Christianity. Gothic architecture features reflected the meaning and purpose of Christianity.
The architecture of this building reflects Biblical references seen in the Christian religion. For instance, Romanesque Cathedrals were built in the shape of the cross that Jesus Christ died on. As well, the altars located inside the cathedrals pointed east, towards the city of Jerusalem, indicating that the world is waiting for the second coming of Christ (Nero). Not only did the architecture of Romanesque cathedrals reference to Christianity, but it also helped advance the knowledge of the religion. Therefore, the innovations that led to the change from Romanesque to Gothic architecture allowed cathedrals to expand upon the principles their building stile already
