The religion I decided to research is the Roman Catholic Church, because it is one that I’ve always wanted to familiarize myself with more because many of my friends are Catholics and I was raised in a Christian family which I’ve heard is very similar to Catholicism. I have been to church with friends in the past before, but have never really taken the time to research and study the history behind this religion. My field-study took place in two different Catholic churches: Holy Rosary Church in Hilmar and Our Lady of the Assumption in Turlock. I chose these two mainly because they were two of the closest churches I have access to and both seem to have a fair amount of people attending. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian based …show more content…
In the fourth century Roman Empire, Constantine I issued the Edict of Milan, which marked the date of the birth of the Church. Also, Christianity was the Roman state religion in the fourth century. “Catholic” derives from the Greek and means universal, and all churches that use the title in their name use it with a historical intent that they claim to be one universal church that was founded by the God that they worship. Today, the whole Christian church still institutes “one holy, Catholic, and apostolic church” in the Nicene Creed. The term Catholic, however, also applies similarly to the churches within the Catholic Communion that are centered in Rome. The Church of Rome is one of the oldest Christian communities, tracing its history to the apostles Peter and Paul in the first century. As the Church of Rome started to develope, it emphasized the central authority and primacy of the bishop of Rome, who became known as the Pope. By the eleventh century, the Catholic Church broke with the Byzantine Church of the East over issues of both authority and doctrine. Particularly in response to this division, several attempts were made to restore union and to heal the wounds of division between the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre is also known as the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church of the Resurrection (Orthodox Christians). Originally identified as being outside the settlement of Calvary, it is located in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel and is considered one of the holiest sites in the world, as well as being a central destination for Christian pilgrims. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was originally built by the Roman Emperor Constantine (272-337) in 330 CE upon the site of a Roman temple. It has since been controlled by Arab rulers, reclaimed by Christian crusaders, repeatedly ruined by fires and conquests, and long been subject to regional religious and political tensions. The Holy Sepulchre is a central Church in
Do you know how many of your County neighbors are barely making ends meet—often not earning enough to cover just one unexpected expense? A recent survey revealed that about 46% of Americans don’t feel they have enough money to cover a $400 emergency expense. Rather than paying it outright, these individuals and families have to put the expense on a credit card or simply cannot cover it.
One of the most traumatic periods in the entire history of Roman Catholicism is the period from the middle of the 14th century to the middle of the 16th because this was the time when Protestantism arose to take its place on the Christian map through its definitive break with Roman Catholicism. It was also the period during which the Roman Catholic Church came into being. Protestant Reformation that began in 1517 with Martin Luther's critique of doctrinal principles is a major religious change that swept across Europe during the 1500s, transforming worship, politics, society, and basic cultural patterns. Its most direct impact was upon religious and philosophical thought. As a result, the Church was fractured,
Well I grew up in a Catholic family with a grandmother who was very spiritual, and even had her own room with hundreds of saints, and she would pray to them for different requests. I never really understood church or many of the Bible stories. The church services were so discipline to me, and felt like a punishment because of the standing and kneeling all through out the service. I moved away with my mother and siblings and we ended up staying at this homeless shelter that was ran by a non denominational church, so part of our agreement to stay was to attend this church. I found this church to be open to anyone and everyone, and during our time their I got baptized. I enjoyed this church. From that time I never really considered myself Catholic, because I could never
Most of the religion was based on Christianity, but it was also a part of Catholicism which was all of Western Europe. The pope was the main person in church and he was thought as the leader or the inspiration of the church. The church wanted to be superior by having lots of power and owning many land. But that’s not all they wanted they also wanted to

It is important for me to attend Bishop McNamara Catholic High School because I want the best possible education I can get in high school. I need to be prepared for college and Bishop McNamara is the school that I feel would best prepare me for my college years. Bishop McNamara is also my ideal school because of the Catholic education I will receive and is very appealing because of the small size, allowing more one-on-one with the teachers.
The founder of the Dominican order was Dominic Savio, born on April 2, 1842 in Riva Northern Italy. Dominic was born to Charles and Brigid Savio, who were poor, hard-working, and pious. He was loved and respected by his friends and he reciprocated, a he exhibited his leadership skills among his peers in a friendly manner. Furthermore, at attender age Dominic was prayerful and had an ever maturing spirituality. Dominic’s remarkable piety encouraged Fr. John Lucca the pastor at his parish, let him receive first communion at the ae of seven while others receive at their teens. The reflection he wrote down before the reception of first communion was as follows, he would go to confession and receive communion as often as his confessor permits. Second, he promises to sanctify
The general church is the branch of government in the Church of the Nazarene that effectively and efficiently connects the members and resources of our denomination to preserve our core values and beliefs and advance our mission to preach holiness, make Christ-like disciples in all the nations, and bring relief to the needy. Recognizing the strength and equality of all partners, the general church combines and apportions time and resources for global mobilization. Simply stated, we can accomplish more united as a global denomination than we ever could at the local church or district level.
The Second Vatican Council lasted from 1962-1965 and it was the 21st ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic Church. This council was called together by Pope John XXII and it was continued under the lead of Pope Paul VI. The Council was important for renewal in the understanding of the Church. The Second Vatican Council needed to figure out how to bring its inner life and its relationship to other Christian traditions, other religions and most importantly, the world. The council also wanted to discuss principles from the Council of Trent and Vatican I that were supposed to happen, but never took place. These principles were taken back from old traditions, practices, and teachings that had often been neglected and forgotten. The second
On Friday, March 11, I attended a Sabbath evening service at the Congregation Beth Shalom Synagogue in Naperville. Being raised and only attending the Roman Catholic Church, I was nervous about attending a service for a faith to which I did not belong and which was not even part of my heritage. However, much to my surprise what I found instead was a religious ceremony with similar origins but different beliefs. A group of Jewish people who welcomed visitors with open arms regardless of their religious faith. A community of Jews who volunteered their time an hour prior to the service so they could educated, teach and answer any of my questions I might have about the Judaism religion. I was even invited for refreshments after the service to meet the congregation. Even though, I learned Judaism and Catholicism are very different religions with different traditions, customs, beliefs and ceremonies, I also observed they both share many similarities.
The Second Vatican Council was the 21st Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, It was an assembly that was lead by Pope John XXIII, to settle the radical changes and issues that were happening in the Church and to apply the Church teachings into the modern world. When the Second Vatican Council was enforced it was in the midst of Cold War. During this time there were threats of a nuclear holocaust, the Soviet Union, and the US had a very powerful but opposing ideologies which are Capitalism vs. Communism and lastly the relevance of Religion. When the Vatican II took place the Church became more responsive to these needs by the Four Constitutions namely, Lumen Gentium, Dei Verbum, Sacrosanctum Concilium and lastly Gaudium et Spes. These
The Roman Catholic Church grew from an outlawed and persecuted religion to a well-organized and powerful ruling body in the western world. After the death of Jesus of Nazareth his disciples begin to spread his teachings of love and salvation through a single God. However, early Christians quickly became seen as a threat to the most powerful Empire at the time; Rome. Being monotheistic they refused to offer sacrifice to state ran cults and as pacifist they refused to join the army. The Roman Empires power laid in both the military and taxation so early Christians became the targets of persecution. In 64 CE Rome declares Christianity illegal and it remained so for almost three hundred years. However, Christianity doesn’t die and when Emperor Constantine made Christianity legal with the Edict of Milan 313 the church grew quickly. Later Emperor Theodosius declares Catholic Christianity the official religion of Rome and bans paganism. From here the Catholic Church grew in power and influence becoming the single most powerful institution the western world. Socially it controlled the everyday lives of people and played a major role in the governing of those same people. Institutionally the church was well organized and based on hierarchy operating like an empire similar to the one that tried to destroy it early in its history. Thanks to this the church also wielded tremendous governing power. However, this all changed
The congregation of the Catholic Church was showing much more interest in their faith, while the condition of the clergy and churchmen declined. For the people belonging to the church there was a great attraction to the more ‘dramatic’ aspects of religion. Popular preachers, such as St. John Capistranó, attracted crowds into the thousands. There were also high masses on important feast days, but mass attendance was low otherwise. Processions also became very popular in the church; for example the Feast of Corpus Christie honoring Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. Pilgrimages to the Holy Land and Rome also became popular, some believers even making the journey on their knees. The congregation also abandoned the idea of mystical theology,
