The similarities between The book I read: Cat's Cradle and the civil war
Cat's Cradle's focus was on that life centers on death this is similar to the civil war because death of the confederate army was the only way to save the lives of all the slaves. During the Civil War the North represented a Utopia and the South represented a Dystopia.
The novel attempts to get its readers to see beyond political, national, economical, and social borders. It just wants you to view human beings for what they are: flawed, beautiful, and crazy creatures. An image in Cat's Cradle that proves how fear is used to control a population, is that of the hook in San Lorenzo. The hook, and fear of it, parallels the bomb's significance according to Carroll and Vonnegut. The hook is supposedly used in San Lorenzo to execute anyone who practices the illegal faith, Bokononism. Though everyone in San Lorenzo practices this faith, and the hook hasn't been used in many years, the fear that is stimulated by the hook
The two literary elements that help distinguish the works of a dystopia genre are symbolism and conflict. There is a lot of symbolism in the book Anthem. The book is filled with them. It is also filled with conflict. This also goes with the short story” Harrison Bergeron“this story also has a lot conflict in it.
An interesting conflict of Northern morals is discovered. The North is portrayed as wanting to set black men free, but they practiced economic slavery on the Southern states. The Civil War was really more politically complex with regards to Abraham Lincoln and his Republican party's actions.
I believe that the cat was the only thing that showed her love and attention. Her only son, had a family of his own, her grandchildren were older now, and she felt like she was not important to them anymore, and the children?s mother was involved with the baby. By bringing the cat, she felt like she would not be lonely. The reader can also tell that the woman is extremely prejudice. She refers to the black child as a ?cute little pickaninny? and a nigger.
The underlying cause for the Civil War was the North’s realization with laws and books about the South’s inhumane treatment of slaves.

McPherson uses information from l00's of diaries and letters from the soldiers to learn why they fought in this war. The Union soldiers fought to preserve the Nation that was created in 1776, to save it from destruction. The Confederate soldiers fought for their independence, liberty, self government, and for revenge.
Cat's Cradle is, "Vonnegut's most highly praised novel. Filled with humor and unforgettable characters, this apocalyptic story tells of Earth's ultimate end, and presents a vision of the future that is both darkly fantastic and funny, as Vonnegut weaves a satirical commentary on modern man and his madness" (Barnes and Noble n.pag). In Cat's Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut uses satire as a vehicle for threatened self-destruction when he designs the government of San Lorenzo. In addition, the Bokonists practice of Boko-maru, and if the world is going to end in total self destruction and ruin, then people will die, no matter how good people are and what religion people believe.
Throughout Cat's Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut satirizes these characters to describe common issues in society, bring about social reform, and hopefully avoid any disasters they may lead to. Felix is satirized through the book to reveal the disadvantages of science and technology. He does not realize his consequences. "After the atomic bomb went off, after it was a sure thing that America
Shortly after, the family is about to set off for Florida. After a brief conversation, Bailey forbids his mother from bringing the cat along for the ride. Once again, the Author expresses her view of her self-absorbed, callous mother through the grandmother. Going against her son’s orders, she decides to bring the cat anyways, for fear it may miss her too much or, in a freak accident, asphyxiate itself on on the gas burners. An utterly selfish action for nothing more than getting what she wants, just because she wants it. This action would prove to be disastrous in the end, showing the self destructive behavior of a woman unfit to be called a “mother” by O’Connor.
The cat to her is the symbol of her desperation to have a child -

Many people think it is just about a cat trying to have fun but it is not. It is about the chaos that is going on in the world around them. Dr.Seuss was known to bring situations to life in his stories and that is what he did just here. Not only does this story teach children on how to rebel against their parents and not pay attention to any of the rules it also says that to a point children should listen and have certain traditions with in their family.
