In a cause and effect essay causal relationships decipher the factors that caused an effect to occur. The first step in determining causal relationships is by identifying the causal chain of events (Kennedy et al. 422). For example, a historian writing a paper on the collapse of colonial rule in Latin America could infer that the American Revolution inspired the revolutions that swept through the Americas. When a writer locates several causes, he or she should determine which are major causes or minor causes (Kennedy et al. 422). For instance, in a cause and effect essay about the Syrian civil war, the Arab spring movement that was sweeping through the middle east is the major cause, while the extensive drought within Syria would be the minor

Chicago in the 1920s was a turning point for the development of ethnic neighborhoods. After the opening of the first rail connection from New York to Chicago in the 1840s, immigration sky rocketed from that point on. Majority of the immigrants to Chicago were Europeans. The Irish, Italians, eastern European Jews, Germans, and Mexicans were among the most common ethnicities to reside in Chicago. These groups made up the greater part of Chicago. The sudden increase in immigration to Chicago in the 1920s soon led to an even further distinguished separation of ethnicities in neighborhoods. The overall development of these neighborhoods deeply impacted how Chicago is sectioned off nowadays. Without these ethnicities immigrating to Chicago

This discussion assignment has two components. First, choose an article from the popular news media (i.e., an article that might appear on a website meant for the general public, NOT a peer-reviewed academic article) that misinterprets correlation as causation. Why is the author’s interpretation of the topic a mistake? For this portion of the assignment, you may choose an article featured on the Correlation or Causation? website, but you do not have to. For the second portion of this assignment, choose one of the articles that you have read for your final project. Describe how the results from one of the articles (preferably a correlation) could be misinterpreted and misconstrued by a news source. What might the misleading headline be, and
Surveys and Experiments, Longitudinal studies, are two significant methods of research used in Sociology. First, the Survey method, a primary research method, studies a larger, broader population of sociology (Bryant, L. (2014), (Census). For this survey method, experimenter choose the subject and questions needed for the collection of data. The advantage of this method involves a faster evaluation period and is inexpensive. However, the disadvantage of this method is the interviewers inability to observe the participants emotions to the questions. Also, the participants may not answer the questions honestly, and they serve as a small group illustrating opinions for a larger population (Henry Tischler, (2011). Secondly, the experiment method, longitudinal studies, is a primary research method attaining results by an explicit control of the environment and observes the independent and dependent variables measured throughout the study. The undertaking this experiment method take, involves explaining how and why an independent variable affects a dependent variable. One advantage this method holds is the outcome. The limitation is localized to a small group related to the ability to control the surrounding variables. In summary, these sociological methods gather information on “human social behaviors during its origin, development, organization, functioning and institutions” (Henry Tischler, (2011), (Bryant, L. (2014), (Census).
Timeliness is important in all aspects of life. In the army they say “10 minutes prior is on time, and being on time is late”, that is the standard set forth and expected to be accomplished by the armed forces. By oversleeping I not only failed to meet the standard, I also failed my squad and my platoon because they did not have accountability of everyone, another main standard of the army. I also took the time of my team leader, who had to sit and wait for me while everyone else did PT. Missing movement not only cost me more time in the end, it cost the whole rest of the unit in one way or another. Timeliness is also the first step in a soldiers’ task to keep accountability at all times. Accountability is defined by
Extensive research has shown the causes of false confessions can be attributed to a phenomenon known as illusory-causation. Illusory-causation is a phenomenon which happens when, “people attribute unwarranted causality to a stimulus simply because it is more noticeable or salient than other available stimuli.” (Lassiter, 2002) Illusory-causation phenomenon can be seen most notable on how people evaluate legal evidence leading to prejudicial effects. (Lassiter, 2002) Evidence such as, videotaped confessions camera perspectives can vastly influence the jurors judgment. Videotaped confessions are most commonly recorded with the camera focused on the suspect this in turn leads mock juror to judge that the confessions were more voluntary and most likely make them guilty. (Lassiter, 2002)Furthermore, integration techniques also play a role in false confessions such as non-assaultive psychology manipulation. (ct. Kassin & Kichel, 1996),cited in (Lassiter,2002).
From I cannot gain weight: New research shows that low body weight is related to high self-esteem by J. Parling, three principles of scientific thinking cannot be identified, but one warning sign of pseudoscience can be identified. Firstly, no correlation can be found as the correlation-causation fallacy is identifiable in this article. According to Lilienfeld et al. (2016), the correlation-causation fallacy shows that when two variables are associated with one another, it is not for certain that one variable causes the other to occur. In the article, this fallacy can be seen as it is stated that high self-esteem and quick metabolism together directly causes low body weight. However, other possible variables were not ruled out. For instance, daily exercise, a healthy diet, and plastic surgery are all common methods of losing weight that could all be variables that help in this process of weight loss but were not mentioned in the article.
