Social media is everywhere; it is an inseparable part of almost every teenager’s life. Newspapers used to be the common form of media, but in today’s world cell phones have taken over all forms of communication. Teenagers depend on Instagram, twitter, and snapchat to see what is going on in the world. Media controls the minds of teenagers almost like a remote control, most teenagers will spend around two or more hours a day looking to see what their friends are doing. Most teens spend sleepless nights sitting on social media without the knowledge of their parents, being sleep deprived affects the health of most which has led to cases of insomnia, mood swings and increased obesity according to www.theguardian.com .
There are multiple studies that show that certain groups of teenagers are prone to violence because of media influence. Cyber bullying is in the top list for why teens commit suicide. Social media makes it easy for teens to hide behind a screen and bully someone. This has become a huge issue in schools across the country. Producers have made multiple movies about the effects of the internet and what It can do to a person. One influential movie that struck me was “cyberbullying” this movie showed the actual effects of what happens when someone is pushed too much on the internet and what can happen to not only the person being bullied but the family and friends involved.

Social media, on one hand, can be used as a great way to share with the world and boost teens’ self-esteem. According to Twenge, the number of teens that go out with their friends has decreased by 40 percent compared to earlier generations. Twenge compares iGens to different generations such as Gen X (born between 1965 and early 1984), baby boomers (1946-1964) and Millennials (born around 1982-2002). Twenge emphasizes on the time teenagers spend on their phones. Social media plays a huge role in this. In accordance to Twenge, different forms of social media like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are what teenagers spend more time on. According to Twenge, the more time teens spend on smartphones the greater they are at risk for suicide, depression, and loneliness. Twenge also explains how teens are not receiving an adequate amount of sleep, many teens now sleep less than seven hours. Social media has many negative effects on mental health. Some people could think that mental health and social media has no relation, when it does.
