Cause and effect, action and reaction, choice and consequence. People make decisions all the time, and we are punished or rewarded for them. B. F. Skinner was the psychologist who believed humans actions are dependent upon consequences of previous actions. In The Crucible John Proctor makes choices that ultimately lead to his death. The first in that long line would be to sleep with Abigail. All of his choices after that leave him dangling six feet off the ground.
