Anxiety IS a huge problem among the young generations in today’s world. Affecting those from all ages, many cases originating from around teenage years. I’m sure many of you have had a moment in your life where anxiety has withered its way into your world affecting the way you do things. Many cases of anxiety begin in school, which in incredibly inconvenient as the students affected by it will be wanting to succeed. Anxiety itself is a natural human response that serves a purpose. Therefore, I believe when it gets out of control we should not think of getting rid of it all together but more to keep it healthy. As to the causes, though there are many, my top 4 would have to be bullying, school pressure, the future and fear of failing. What these can do is create unhealthy thinking patterns which becomes a serious problem among young people when it starts disrupting their regular routine. I personally think these thinking patterns can very easily turn into diagnosed disorders such as PTSD, GAD.
Bullying is a very common cause of anxiety among young people today. People who are affected by some form of bullying often results them having recurring thinking patterns e.g. experiencing flashbacks, having nightmares, panic attacks, and a lot of them live in the fear that they will experience it again which in some ways never switches these patterns off. I believe that because anxiety has this effect where it fully takes control of people’s lives, it should be recognized. I’m sure
According to Beyond Blue, it is mostly a side-effect of those suffering from depression. (Blue, 2016) As claimed by Help Guide, a trusted guide to mental, social and emotional health, anxiety can also be developed from an incident that has happened previously in a person’s life scarring them with tragic memories that often provide unwanted flash backs (Blue, 2016). According again, to Beyond Blue, anxiety can also be developed from stress at work, home, school, a traumatic event, or death or loss of a loved one. It can also just be as simple as having anxiety running in the individual’s family and developing the genes. (Blue,
Anxiety has both mental and physical effects, it is our internal alarm system to put our mind on a physical alert and prepares for us a "fight or flight response". This alarm can go away when we know that everything is okay and there is no danger nearby or nothing is going to happen but sometimes our alarm will not shut off and then an anxiety problem persists. There are different types of anxiety disorders and I will discuss generalized anxiety disorder
First of all, there are many causes of anxiety. Anxiety may be caused by a mental condition, a physical condition, the effects of drugs, or a combination of these. Some common external causes are stress at work, school, in a relationship, from an emotional trauma, from a serious mental illness, from financial stress, and from taking drugs
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between various psychological responses (mood, emotion and coping) and the sympathetic nervous system response to an acute stress challenge. This will help understand the underlying mechanisms in the stress-ill-health relationship and will increase the knowledge about how psychological aspects may reduce physiological responses. Therefore, the collected knowledge will help form future interventions.
When hear about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder we think of combat veterans and violent and near-death experiences. However, bullying can cause PTSD as well because it can cause fear, worry, sadness, anger, loneliness, low self-worth, inability to trust others. Bullying can take a psychological hard on both the bully and the victim and it is not clear how long these effects would last. Kids that are bullied were the most likely to be diagnosed with panic disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder consider suicide. Bullying can cause permeant issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). (Gordon, 2014). Psychological bullying is to when the bully attacks the victim personally. The bully sometimes will make may make jokes about the victim’s
Anxiety is an emotional state commonly cause by the perception of real or perceived danger that threaten the security of an individual. It allows a person to prepare for or react to environmental changes. (cite) Everyone have experienced some type of anxiety. These experiences have a certain amount of nervousness and apprehension when faced with a stressful situation. There is no one cause for anxiety disorders. Several factors can play a role such as genetics, brain biochemistry, overactive fight or flight responses can be caused by too much stress.
and panic attacks. Bullying happens not only to children, but to people of all ages and different
The exact causes of anxiety are still currently unknown. Studies have shown that brain chemistry, environmental stresses and other factors are thought to play a role in the development of chronic anxiety (Lehigh Valley Health Network, 2014). However, according to University of Maryland Medical Center (2014), anxiety disorders are most likely caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Most people with these disorders seem to have a biological vulnerability to stress, making them more susceptible to environmental stimuli than the rest of the population (University of Maryland Medical Center, 2014).
Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the United States that affects over 18% of the adult population. It also affects 25% of the teenage population. In recent years there has been a rise in anxiety disorders in adults and teens. There are multiple reasons that this could be, cultural changes, economy, higher divorce rates, etc.
Psychologists poorly understand the causes and long-term effects of anxiety disorders in adolescents. According to Woodward and Fergusson (2001) in their journal article “Life Course Outcomes of Young People With Anxiety Disorders in Adolescence”, anxiety disorders affect nearly 5.7% to 17.7% of adolescents across the range of anxiety disorders (Woodward and Ferguson, 2001). These disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, overanxious disorder, social phobia, agoraphobia, panic disorder and simple phobia (Woodward and Ferguson, 2001). In fact, according to Friedman (2014), a professor of clinical psychology at Weill Cornell Medical College, in his New York Times article “Why Teenagers Act Crazy”, up to 20% of adolescents in the United States demonstrate characteristics of a diagnosable anxiety disorder (Friedman, 2014). Many psychologists have questioned why anxiety disorders affect so many adolescents. In a study at Weill Cornell Medical College and Stanford University, researchers learned that adolescents tend to be more afraid and have difficulty controlling their fears. When researchers showed participants in the study fearful faces, adolescents had a more exaggerated response in the amygdala, the part of the brain that evaluates and responds to fear, than children and adults. So overall, adolescents already experience more increased fear, which induces more anxiety. Normally the prefrontal cortex can help
While there is hope of being able to reduce testing anxiety , testing anxiety causes multiple problems, and can cause struggles a student to lose motivation, and causes misinterpretation of ones intelligence, because there are many ways one can cope with this anxiety but that does not mean it works for everyone.
There is now actual known cause of this disorder. It is said to be genetic, traumatic, or environmental, but their is no proven source. As proven in the elements of behavior article “Many people who have anxiety believe they inherited it. The general consensus, however, appears to be that anxiety results from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors”(elementsofbehaviorhealth). This shows how genetics may play a huge in role in the development of general anxiety disorder. A traumatic situation may lead to severe GAD. For example if something tragic such as car accident happens to a few people you know, you may be to worried or afraid to drive car. Not having rational thoughts about the outcome of traveling in Automobiles. Lastly environmental, involving the people around you. The people in your daily
For some people, anxiety interferes with their ability to function on a day-to-day basis. Daily routines that were once normal now feel like a heavy burden that takes an enormous amount of effort to complete. Excessive anxiety puts an immense amount of strain on a person's body and some studies indicate it can lead to an increased risk of stroke, cardiac arrest or heart disease. When struggling with anxiety, people suffer from
Anxiety is a feeling we can all relate too, some worse than others. Believe it or not, anxiety can be a normal feeling. The emotion you get before an exam, new job interview, or going on the first date, that is anxiety. There are differences in normal anxiety and pathological (abnormal) anxiety. Normal anxiety should last for a short amount of time and cause some discomfort. Now if the anxiety starts to become prolonged and causes the person to become incapacitate, that is when it becomes pathological anxiety. One of the serious disorders that come from anxiety is called Panic Disorder (Anxiety disorders in Adults). The most common demonstration of panic disorder is a sudden feeling of fear or discomfort without a recognizable trigger, along with at least four of the following symptoms: dyspnea; dizziness or faintness; palpitations; trembling or shaking; sweating; choking; nausea or abdominal distress; depersonalization; numbness; flushes or chills; chest pain or discomfort; fear of dying; and fear of doing something uncontrolled or going crazy (The western journal of medicine). For those who go through life with a panic disorder can understand exactly how much of an impact it can have on life.
Anxiety is a reaction to things that stress you. It is normal to have some anxiety at work, school, or home. It is when anxiety becomes a daily occurrence with no known cause that it is categorized as a disorder. Anxiety, panic, and depression often begin with normal stress that gets out of control.
