Sigmund Freud once said, “Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength”. As he said this, Mr. Freud had many controversial ideas about human personality and certain therapy uses that have influenced humanity's self-understanding. Psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes, along with this Psychology has many “branches” or areas as psychology is only a general idea. Self-concept or most knowingly as Self-Esteem, which is only one of the many “branches” of Psychology, has the highest effect on an organism’s mind that can change based who you know and where you are.
The feelings you express and show are what people identify you as whether it be a good expression or a bad one. The Department of Psychology, located in Denver have published a book series based of the causes and consequences of low self-esteem in children and adolescents. The author Susan Harter states that people, at the age of 13 to 25, are prone to let their emotions control them to an extent. She states that adolescents and children are complex or they are a perplexing individuals in the field of science. Many of the test subjects they use to test the scientist theories in the beginning stated about themselves that “when I look in the mirror, I don’t like what I see; I don’t like who I am as a person”. According to Harry C. Triandis at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Three aspects of the self; private, public, and collective, are all probabilities in different kinds
The Song dynasty allowed the Chinese economy to grow rapidly and abundantly, and as a result of this China became extremely affluent. During the Song Dynasty (960-1276), technology also became highly advanced in fields such as agriculture, iron work and printing. Even today, scholars talk of the Song economic revolution. The population grew rapidly during this time, and more and more started to gravitate towards living in large cities. The Song system of government was also advanced for its time.
Children and adolescents with low self-esteem are more likely to have problems with peers (Hymal et al., 1990). Furthermore, they are more prone to psychological
When facing poverty, some believe poverty itself can create or contribute to the problem of low self-esteem, although this link is by no means universal (Batty and Flint 2009). Poverty is best described as not having enough money to provide basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Poverty coupled with low self-esteem can impair all aspects of a development and can ultimately have lifelong detrimental consequences. The effects of low self-esteem from childhood can continue into adulthood and the cycle of poverty may be hard to prevail. Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself and your abilities. Self-esteem is the key driving factor and can play a significant role in the contribution to success in life. Poverty is a cause and affects and often coupled with self-esteem issues that start at childhood and continue into adult life. The vicious cycle with lifelong barriers that can be passed on from one generation to the next, often make it hard to overcome negative circumstances.
The ocean swells around you like a dust devil in a sandbox. Salt water fills your nostrils. The ship that deemed this fate upon you sails into the distance. You wonder, how am I going to get out of this one? Suddenly, a large metal object plants itself beneath your feet. A porthole opens and men carry you inside the belly of the large iron beast floating nether you. What’s going to happen now? In Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, this is exactly what main characters M. Aronmax, his servant Conseil, and Ned Land the harpooner, were thinking. After a hefty six-hour wait of being locked in a dark cell, the door opens.
Sigmund Freud was a well known psychologist whose theories have founded the understanding of the human psyche. Freud’s theory of personality is one of his most known theories. It details that there are three segments of consciousness. The id is desire, immorality and is what drives us to do wrong. The superego exists to counteract and overpower the id, as it is morality, commonly known as our conscious. The ego exists to balance out both extremes and devises a solution to sate each segment. Then there are the defense mechanisms, repression, denial, projection, displacement, regression and sublimation. These are employed by the ego to keep the balance between the id and the superego and to protect the psyche, especially in traumatic times. Last, the Oedipus complex which Freud believed, only exists in children from the ages of 3-5, when they become attracted to
The Organismic self the true self both conscious and unconscious. The Organismic valuing process a fundamental concept within humanistic psychology. A tendency to automatically pick, work towards and search for situations which fit into our inborn aspirations in order to lead a gratifying life. A biologically driven process not aware of 'I' or 'ME’. The Actualizing tendency, human 'organism' has an underlying force which drives us to enhance and meet our maximum full potential physically, spiritually and emotionally. The actualising tendency can never be destroyed only suppressed, it’s been described as a 'biological pressure to fulfil the genetic blueprint'. Positive regard which is a learnt need developed in infancy. A perception of experiencing the self-making a positive difference to another. A need that validates love, affection and respect from a significant other. The Self-concept which
I believe that psychology has generated so much research on the self because it is important to understand ones self. Being able to understand why you behave, act, or even react to situations can help psychologist. All of our characteristics make each of us unique. Allport’s theory of personality takes the individual and then emphasizes the persons uniqueness. The theory explains how we each have our own temperament, attitude, traits, intelligence, and even skills. Allport’s theory states that ones personality is determined biologically at birth, and then is shaped from the persons experiences and their
Self-esteem is the way you look at or think about yourself. There are two types. The good, which means you are confident about yourself, and the low. Which means you don’t like something about yourself and its bothering you. Both types may make a big impact on your life. Mentioned by an author from Florida state university, named Roy F Baumeister, “self-esteem has a strong relation to happiness,” (Baumesiter). This suggests that having a bad or low self-esteem can cause problems to yourself such as stress, over thinking about yourself, and even depression. Self-esteem can affect people in many different ways weather if it’s good or bad in the way you react to yourself.
The secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant and fearful-avoidant attachment styles share both commonalities and differences. Desiring a romantic relationship is common in the secure, anxious-preoccupied, and sometimes in the fearful-avoidant attachment styles, this could mean that all the styles in the end lead toward a romantic relationship. Just because you are in one style does not mean that you cannot grow and slowly move to other attachment styles, all it takes is just that one moment when it all comes together for you. The desire to be in a relationship eventually leads to the adult wanting to commit and faces that they want a relationship with a person no matter what happens in the future. Having low self-esteem is common in the anxious –preoccupied and the fearful-avoidant attachments. The low self-esteem arises when the adult feels they are unworthy of their partner’s intimacy. Adults displaying these styles are usually less sociable and have lower satisfaction with themselves, which leads to low satisfaction in their romantic relationship. It is hard for adult with low self-esteem to fully commit and to deal with changes. Their own issues lead to them not being able to handle their partners’ commitment and any type of changes they may have. There are commonalities in the way that they deal with their loved one when they feel anxiety. The responsiveness issues have to do with all of the attachment styles, however responsiveness can range from zero to one
It is through this article that I was presented—the structural components of one’s self-concept are assumed to have unique anticipated for emotional adjustment that is separate from the sway of content components, so the knowledge and evaluative properties of self-concept (Morloes, Dijk & Dijk). Thus, regardless of whether one has the tangible data to prove such, self-concept is believed to impact one’s emotional adjustment (Morloes, Dijk
Ever since health class, today’s young adults have been taught about self-esteem. Along with self-esteem, students are taught what it means to have “high” self-esteem or “low” self-esteem. Having high self-esteem is the ability to think highly of oneself, whereas low self-esteem is the feeling of doubt of abilities in oneself. They are also taught how to develop high self-esteem and why having low self-esteem has a negative effect on a person’s health. Some people believe that these teachings have gone too far. They believe that today’s generation, Gen’mers, actually have too high of self-esteem. While Generation Me implies that having high self-esteem has a negative impact on Gen’mers and society, having high self-esteem is actually a positive thing.
The relationship between self-concept and self-esteem can be looked at in relations to three psychological theories: self-discrepancy theory, self-evaluation maintenance theory, and affective forecasting theory (Diaz, 2011). The self-discrepancy theory is the theory that deals with the actual self, which is who the person currently is, the ought self is who the person feels they can become and the ideal self is the person the individual wants to become. The self-evaluation maintenance theory deals with the relationship between how people perform along with the performance of other people in area of high importance. Meaning if one individual score higher in self- importance issues this may decrease ones self-esteem (Diaz, 2011). The affective forecasting theory looks at the way people will foresee how things in the future will make them feel. This theory deals with people miscalculating their future actions. People sometimes exaggerate the influence of negative events and take the way they cope with things lightly. This means that people with low self-esteem tend to feel negatively about their coping skills and people with higher self-esteem feel more positively about their abilities to cope (Diaz, 2011).
Self concepts begins in childhood but it continues to develop throughout life. As we observe how other people react to us, we modify our “self.” The “self” is never a finished project, and it continues to change as our life takes different turns. Our “self” reacts to the environment that we are in.
This chapter about Self Concept has greatly affected me. In a way that has brought up a lot of awareness, yet pain in my life. Although the chapter has brought up unwanted memories, the chapter relates to psychology and I am going to school to study psychology. I love studying psychology and because of my love for learning, I want to help other people improve their lives.
Picture this: A teenage girl strolls into the bathroom mascara in hand, ready to fix her messed up eyelashes that had gotten worn out after the first three hours of the day. Mascara can either be a girl's best friend by helping them feel like they look better with only a little bit or their worst enemy by making girls feel like they need to constantly apply more to their eyelashes, and add other makeup to more features of their face, to look beautiful. The more often these girls apply mascara, it is as if a balloon filled with negative thoughts about their appearance, is being pulled closer to them and they don’t know what to do with those thoughts. These girls with low self-esteem continue to check the mirror and apply more makeup. These actions keep pulling the balloon closer and closer to them. Once the balloon draws so close to them, BAM! It is as if the balloon pops and all of the negative thoughts about their appearance become stronger than ever.
