This source is showing children being sold to businessmen, who use the children for cheap labour in order for their businesses to flourish during the American industrial revolution. Child labour was very common during the industrial revolution since the government had little to no say in labour laws, other than that wages must be given to all employees. The government had no say in how high employees must be paid so often that employers would hire children because they could get away with paying them much less than an adult, considering they don’t need as much as adults do when it comes to food intake, shelter and other necessities.
