One reason why animal abuse occurs is because people often receive awards from the mistreating of animals, or it is a way to for them to deal with certain situations that happen in their life. According to an article from the ASPCA, people who watch 2 or more dogs fight receive a great amount of money. Dogs are made to fight each other for the benefit of the people. The people watching the fight either receive money or just do it for entertainment, “It is not unusual to see $20,000-30,000 change hands during a single fight—major dog fight raids have resulted in seizures of more than $500,000.” ("What Is Dog Fighting, and What Can You Do To Stop It?") One of the main reasons for dog fighting is the award for the amount of money they would obtain for a dog. One of the reasons people are involved in dog fighting is because they receive money, more than $20,000 per dog. With dog fighting comes a greed where people want to come out on top and leave with the most amount money. Others may take advantage of animals without even knowing they are hurting the animal, according to Jared Newnam, people with anxiety tend to hoard animals because it is a way to deal with their stress, “Hoarding is part of an anxiety disorder in which people, for a variety of reasons, feel they are incapable of forming lasting relationships with people, so they substitute them.” (Newnam) People who hoard animals try to fill a void by collecting various objects or animals. They can’t make the same
Animal hoarding is an obsession that is growing in victims and recognition throughout the world today. The typical animal hoarder has a serious psychological condition called obsessive compulsive disorder. Animal hoarders also may be suffering from different kinds of addictions, delusional disorder, attachment disorder, dementia, and even zoophilia. These people feel they have the responsibility to keep and care for an overabundant amount of animals, thinking that they are helping these creatures. In reality, these pet owners are only putting their animals through abuse and neglect because it is impossible for them to provide the proper care for such a large number of pets. These owners are not only harming their animals with
To be more specific, animals get abused or abandoned every 10 seconds which shouldn't be happening. Overall about 7.6 million animals go into shelters nationwide and out of those only 3-4 million of them get adopted every year. Not only do 2.7 million dogs and cats get killed every year because the shelters get too full and there aren’t enough homes to adopt them but in high kill shelters animals get killed if they aren't adopted in a certain amount of time. Around easter time people buy chicks and rabbits, and often abandon them, not realizing they still need care and they also will dye these animals different colors thinking it will do them no harm but in reality it does. That is why in some states that is illegal. Abandoning animals in many states is a crime. 1 out of every 10 dogs get a home they will always live in which means that most dogs do not get a home that they will always live in and less than 20% of cats and 15-20% of dogs get reunited with their owner after they are lost. Homeless animals outnumber humans 5-1 which are a lot. One way to help animals is by adopting abused or abandoned animals. People can also donate to charities that help abandoned animals. Many animals go to shelters because they get left behind by their owners or they were found on the streets. Most pets that are stray were kept indoors. There are about 70 million stray cats in the united states. Animal Abuse and abandonment are
Research shows that the mental health of humans can be a big factor of why some people abuse animals, such as BPD (Borderline personality disorder) which can cause a person to be very violent. Another factor can be the mental state that person is in at that moment that caused them to do it, also illegal activity such as ''Dogfighting'' which is also known as a blood sport.
The article claims that some sort of registry needs to be established. For instance, an abuser could ignore their restrictions after jail time, go to another state, and easily obtain more animals, since shelters have no notice of their past abuse. Also, abusing animals can be linked to many other crimes, such as crimes involving violence, drugs, and property, domestic violence, sex offenses, or even murder. For example, they discussed how after an investigation, serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, was found guilty of abusing animals, which led up to his vicious acts against humans.
Across the world people abuse animals for sport, gambling, and pure exploitation like dog fighting, cock fighting, and breeding dogs just to be able to sell them to places such as shady pet stores and such. Dog fighting is a very lucrative illegal activity that goes largely unpunished these people take poor dogs and inbreed them with their moms, dads, and siblings to be able to create the perfect fighting dog that can make them loads of money. Some other things these groups do include giving them drugs that induce rage and make them even more lethal. These sorts of activities give other breeds such as pit bulls bad reputation; any dog regardless of type can be prone to violence, especially due to birth defects to inbreeding. In other parts
imal abuse has been an issue since the 12th century when dogs and cats were commonly found roaming the streets. Today it has become an ever growing issue which ranges from household pets to farm animals such as cows, chickens, horses. Animal abuse also is not just in America, such as bullfighting in Spain which began many centuries ago as a sacrifice to the gods. Is still practiced today as a form of entertainment. This kind of behavior does not seem right in our everyday life and just seems wrong because animals should be treated with kindness and not hatred.
There are many different things that fall under the category of “cruelty”, neglect and abuse being the two main subcategories. The most common type of animal abuse involves dogs, Pit-bulls in particular. In 2007, of 1800 media-reported cases of animal cruelty, 64% (1,126) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats, and 18% (337) involved other animals. Some of the most common places where animal abuse occur are, in no particular order: fur farms, dog fights, laboratories, races (both Greyhound and horse), slaughterhouses, and puppy mills. Some less thought of forms of animal abuse are crush videos, traditional Chinese medicine, the cat/dog meat trade in Asia, the ivory trade, trophy hunting, and even shock collars. Abandonment is the leading form of animal cruelty. (See illustration.)
Why would anyone abuse an animal? Animal abuse is rather common, you could be doing it even if you don’t think you are. There are many animals that deal with abuse or neglect, about 1,423 animals a year. That’s in the U.S. alone. Animals are living creatures, just like you, and they’re not cheap. Neglect is another version of abuse, and it can come in many forms. Neglect could be starving them, not giving them medical care, not paying attention to them, etc, etc. Animals are just like humans, I mean, sure they can’t make their own meals, and they can’t drive a car, but that doesn’t mean they have fewer rights than you do. If an animal is abused or neglected the animal will be taken and the owner should be charged. If someone abuses an
Two large reasons people abuse animals are A) The person experienced abuse or bullying themselves and B) They have it set in their mind because of maybe what they weren’t taught growing up to be mindful of animals. When a person is bullied and abused they tend to find some way to vent and some of them find this venting process in mistreating animals. The other reason, not being taught when growing up, is also common. When someone isn’t taught not to do something, it’s only natural that they don’t know not to do it; they don’t think what they are doing is wrong. So if we want to even slightly reduce animal abuse we need to stop bullying others so that they don’t, in turn, bully animals, and be sure to teach everyone starting at a young age that abusing an animal is cruel and
Even though it may not seem like it , animals being abused on purpose is a very common issue today. There are people who think that animals do not deserve any respect (Missimer). They look at animals as slaves or something they can just push around and force to do anything. Why get the animal if you're not going to respect it. Some of the people may have experienced violence themselves (Missimer). Nine times out of ten people that neglect their animals , have experienced some type of violence or abuse in their own lives. Being abused or in
There are some people who intentionally harm animals because of their low self-esteem. “These are people who intentionally hurt animals because they enjoy hurting things, or because it makes them feel powerful. Many of these people would hurt other people if they could get away with it. They just choose to hurt animals because animals are more helpless than people,” found by the American Prosecution Research Institute, in the article of "Real Issues".
How do people define what it means to be an animal hoarder? Well, it’s a person who houses a large amount of domestic animals in which they cannot provide the minimal standards it take to own an animal that usually ends up in neglect. According to ___ animal hoarding takes place in every community and affects hundreds of thousands of animals every year in the U.S. These animals face many health and behavioral issues that lead them with lifelong disabilities and even death. The harm caused to animals by hoarders clearly classifies as a form of animal abuse ().
The origin of the association between animal abuse and domestic violence remains unclear as do the factors that make the connection. This connection between the cruelties could be better understood in a larger context of the human-animal bond. “The evidence demonstrating the importance of the human-animal bond in human functioning and well-being will make the strong relationship that many battered women have with their pets understandable” (Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty). Animals are a part of the home environment of humans. The bond shared between women and their pets make it possible for abusers to control women by abusing their pets. “The link between animal abuse and women
In her book, First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans, Katherine Rogers proficiently covers the history of the relationship that exists between dogs and humans, from the mutual love and companionship that arises to the neglect and cruelty humans exhibit towards dogs. Throughout the book, there are many instances where dogs are abused and in each instance one of two themes are clear: dogs are abused either because humans are indifferent towards dogs or humans see them as an inferior species - and to some extent, possessions. In order to appropriately demonstrate how and why humans abuse dogs, it is necessary to have a clear definition of animal abuse. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals defines it as “acts of violence
Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
