An important event that is known to be so far the most tragic attack in American history, it left Americans with a constant fear of another terrorist attack, this tragic event is known as 9/11. This tragedy occurred when an Islamic group known as al-Qaeda attacked the World Trade Center in New York City. Al-Qaeda’s leader was Osama bin Laden, a Saudi fugitive seeking retaliation for America’s involvement in the Persian Gulf War, its support of Israel, and the military’s constant presence in the Middle East. Their plan to invade America began on the morning of September 11, 2001 when 19 militants hijacked 4 American Airline planes and were targeting attacks in the United States.

President Bush’s (BE #12). first reaction was the thought that the pilot had a heart attack. However (BE #7), as soon as the President realized that this was an act of terrorism, he declared war with the statement “I made up my mind at that moment that we were going to war” (Haulley 2005). The Otis F-15s only get to New York at 9:13am, and set up a defensive barrier at 9:25. By then, the next hijacking took place in Washington at 9:35am. The last flight, United 93, had 2 unarmed F-16 Fighting Falcons on its tail to execute a kamikaze style attack, but the heroic efforts of the passengers on Flight 93 brought the Boeing 757 down before the F-16s could intervene.

The attacks left everyone speechless. All planes were grounded and many buildings were evacuated. Everyone was in fear. Then, at 9:59 am, World Trade Centers South Tower collapses. Debris covered the street and smoke was everywhere. People ran as fast as they could away from the collapsed building in fear of dying. When at 10:28 am the North Tower collapses as well. On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
