In the debate, one side claims that the Boxer Rebellion was fueled by a large drought, which the boxers claimed was being invoked by the Christians. The other side of the debate says that the rebellion was mainly fueled by the fear and hatred of foreigners, especially christians. The people who claim the drought have a valid point, because in the places where the rebellion was the bloodiest, were also the areas where the drought was the worst. However, the people who say that it was mainly foreign hate, reminding the opposition that people in 1900’s were sophisticated enough to not truthfully blame natural phenomenons on witchcraft.

The northerners and the southerner’s views on this war were different. The northerners viewed it as a revolutionary war and the southerners viewed it as rebellion. The war started out due to the many differences between the northern and southern states. Between these two regions laid economic, social and political differences, with slavery being the main root of the differences. As the war ended it caused many social and economic changes. One huge change was the abolishment of slavery. Race relation and slave confusions were tearing up the country’s political and social architecture. I believe that the Civil War has changed the way we look at this world today because once the Civil War came to an end it abolished slavery.

Many people can argue that the main cause of the Civil War was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, The Missouri Compromise, or even the Compromise of 1850. There are an abundant amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. What most people don’t understand, that most of the events leading up to the Civil War that people debate on, were related to slavery. Slavery is the practice of, or a system based on, using the enforced labor of other people (in this case the “other people” were African-Americans). At the time of the Civil War, the Abolitionists (the people that wanted to end slavery most were in the north) had many conflicts with the South (who preferred slavery). All of these conflicts, such as the Border War and John Brown’s Raid, made the North and the South have violent attitudes toward each other. And then the “straw that broke the camel’s back” effect came into place, and the North and the South eventually declared war against each other. The main cause of the Civil War was slavery as shown by the Border War, John Brown’s Raid, and the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher.

One of the biggest factors resulting in America revolting against the British was the various taxes Britain levied on the Americans. The punishments brought about an atmosphere of utter embarrassment and fear but also encouraged a lack of distrust in the Manchus; the event validated the imperial government’s incapability to lead China to liberation. Although the financial cost caused some apprehension, it didn’t amount to economic turmoil – the penalties actually caused a change in the nation’s perception towards the Manchu dynasty as opposed to an economic transformation. The reparations led the Chinese to have an increasingly negative stance towards the dynasty, diminishing any respect the imperial rulers upheld.

Although many researchers have showed the causes they have found, there will be other research that disagrees with them. This paper mainly supports the claim that suggested the three major causes of the boxer rebellion, and refutes the point that the new technologies and innovations that the West had introduced was not one of the causes. It will define three main causes that leaded to the boxer uprising which were the personal and religious belief of Chinese people, the rise of Christianity, and the support of Qing dynasty.
