Thesis:
In 1962, the United States had a conflict with the Soviet Union that almost caused a nuclear war, called the Cuban Missile Crisis. The conflict started because the Soviet Union created a nuclear missile base in Cuba in October of 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis ended after thirteen days when both the United States and the Soviet Union made several compromises and the missile base was removed from Cuba.
Historical Context:
In 1945, the United States and the Soviet Union started the Cold War because of the tension between the two countries during World War II and even after it ended. The Soviets added to the tension by trying to spread communism throughout Europe. In order to try and stop the Soviet Union, “the United States and its European allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a unified military command to resist the Soviet presence in Europe (1949).” This conflict lead up to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 when the Soviet Union formed an alliance with Cuba and they put a nuclear base ninety miles of their coast. “The Cuban Missile Crisis is considered the climax of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.” The United States got involved because Cuba is very close to their territory which means the Soviet Union would be able to shoot a nuclear missile at the United States. “Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev promised to defend Cuba with Soviet arms and continue to ship weapons to Cuba.” And at this point, the United States
The Cuban Missile Crisis all started in October, 1962, when an American spy plane spotted and secretly photographed missile sites being built on the island of Cuba by the Soviet Union. President Kennedy did not tell the Soviet Union right away that we had found their nuclear missile site. But days later, President Kennedy meet secretly with his advisors to discuss the situation. President Kennedy and his advisors though long and hard about what to do and the finally came up with an idea. Kennedy decided to put a naval blockade around the island of Cuba. The purpose of this was so Cuba could not get anymore military supplies for the Soviet Union. President Kennedy demanded that the missiles that were already there be disabled and that the sit be destroyed. Later on, Kennedy told America what was happening on a televised address. Everyone was anxious about what the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, would say about the naval blockade. But both President Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev recognized that the devastation that a nuclear war will bring is too much.
The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 lasted thirteen days and was one of the major events during the Cold War, when the United States and the Soviet Union were brink of a nuclear world war. Fidel Castro had become leader of Cuba and had turned the country into a communist state, similar to the Soviet Union. The USSR was given permission to place nuclear missiles in Cuba to target major cities in the United States, the reason was because the Soviet Union was threatened by the missiles placed in Italy and Turkey by the Americans. However, neither of the nation's fired their weapons; and an agreement between Nikita Khrushchev (leader of the USSR) and President John F.
The Cuban Missile Crisis is one of the most impactful events in the Cold War due to the effect that it had after it happened. The effect of the Cuban Missile Crisis created many changes on the direct and indirect relations between the United States and Soviet Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis spanned 13 days in October 1962 that almost brought the world into a nuclear war. This all began when a United States U-2 spy plane Cuba took photos of Soviet SS-4 medium range ballistic missiles getting setup for the ability to launch. This caused the U.S leaders to be thrown into a panic because the Cuban Government had very strong ties with the Soviet Union who are the United States biggest enemies at the time. Another reason the United States was very fearful is because the coast of Cuba is only 90 miles of the coast of Florida. When President John F Kennedy was told of the missile threat in Cuba he immediately called a meeting with his closest advisors on how to react. There were many ideas on how to react to the missiles, some of Kennedy’s advisors wanted to invade Cuba, others wanted to send a warning to the Soviet Union. JFK finally decided to send a naval blockade to cuba for the purpose of stopping more supplies reaching the Cuban military from Russia. The blockade even though the blockade did not include attacking anyone, it was still seen as an act of aggression by the Soviet Union. The U.S was
The idea both countries having hold of nuclear weapons, specifically Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), made each other frightened to advance and develop more weapons, faster and better than the other nation. This led to the creation of the first nuclear missile by the Soviets, and the first hydrogen by the Americans. The Soviet Union was more effective than the United States in producing weapons including submarine ICBMs, long range bombers, and land ICBMs (Doc 7). The sheer fact that each country possessed nuclear weapons was enough to hold back in hot combat, as both countries feared nuclear demise. The weapon that was used to fight in the war was more fear, rather than actual weapons. Another threat of nuclear war was coming from Cuba, another communist nation that was led by Fidel Castro. The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted thirteen days and was started because the United States invaded Cuba to stop nuclear missiles that were aimed at America, which were discovered by Operation Mongoose. Cuba and the Soviet Union were angered that America had discovered the missiles, and the United States was fearful that they would be launched. United States President was now John F. Kennedy, the year was 1962, and the Cold War had been going on for fifteen years, yet there was still not hot war, only the threat of it. In order to
The Cuban Missile Crisis began October 16, 1962. It was at the height of the Cold War that this potentially lethal confrontation arose between the United States and the Soviet Union. A United States reconnaissance plane discovered a military stockpile of Soviet nuclear missiles and bombers in Cuba. Some historians point out that Khrushchev's real intention in deploying the missiles into Cuba was to control West Berlin. They would be used in this context as a sufficient reason for the Western powers (The USA, UK, and France) to allow him to achieve his plan. However, The government of Washington, along with President John F. Kennedy at its head, believed this to be a threat and was not willing to tolerate such a threat so close to home.
The crisis began on October 15, 1962 when photographs by a U.S. spy plane revealed Soviet missiles under construction in Cuba just 90 miles away from the coast of the United States. The crisis ended on October 28 during the tense thirteen days of standoff, the two great superpowers faced off in stalemate. The crisis finally ended when Kennedy and Khrushchev made the secret deal. In exchange for the Soviets backing down their missiles, the United States would get rid of its nuclear missiles from Turkey and promise not to invade Cuba. ( John F. Kennedy)We've never been any closer to world destruction than the Cuban Missile Crisis.
“The thirteen days marking the most dangerous period of the Cuban missile crisis begin.”(Missile Crisis). People believe that The Cuban Missile Crisis was a big tragedy. People were trying to save their lives. “The crisis peaked on October 27, when an American U-2 surveillance plane was shot down over Cuba by a surface-to-air missile.”( Cuban Missile Crisis). JFK had to think of a way to fix everything. If he didn’t think of a way to make sure everything goes okay, something really bad could happen. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK was Able to effectively respond to the threat of nuclear war through diplomacy and action despite the contradictory advice from his advisors.
According to the article “The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962” in the website “www.johndclare.net” the Cuban Missile Crisis was one cause of the Cold War. It was the time when the world global nuclear war could happen. It points out that the crisis had different causes and effects. The article states that the United State will be tough for the superpower tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. It cites that Cuban joined with Russia to change resources for machines
The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in 1963 in a setting that was the high point of tension in the Cold War. The most significant background cause of the Cuban Missile Crisis was the underlying cold war ideology of capitalism vs communism. This was dramatically increased by the second key cause, a series of events that quickly built tensions between the super powers from 1959 such as the U2 incident, JFK’s response to the Berlin Wall, and the Bay of Pigs incident. The third cause was the relationship between the leaders Khrushchev and Kennedy. It can be argued that the short-term consequences of the Crisis were concentrated geographically on the people of the United States, the Soviet Union, and Cuba during and immediately after the event. Historians have suggested that the long-term consequences of the Crisis were more global in nature and the impact was felt up until the end of the Cold War in 1990 including the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban treaty and the new relaxed relationship between the superpowers US and USSR.
It is time, at last, to speak the truth about the government of Cuba, and the truth is this. Cuba Government is really not a good friend of us.
The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war. The crisis was a major confrontation between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The confrontation was caused by the Soviets putting missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles off the coast of the United States of America. The world was in the hands of President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khruchchev. These two men would have to reach a compromise or else the results would be fatal.
Cuban Missile Crisis “It is insane that, two men sitting on opposite sides of the world, should be able to decide to bring an end to civilization” ( John F. Kennedy, Cuban Missile Crisis). The Cuban Missile Crisis took place for thirteen days. The countries involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis included the United States, Cuba, and the Soviet Union. Two of the main causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis were the bad relations between Cuba and its allies, the Soviet Union, with the United States and the Cold War. After the crisis, the humiliation of the Bay of Pigs Invasion to the United States and the breakup of Cuba with the Soviet Union were lasting effects of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
It was almost the start of a nuclear war, or what would be World War III. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a major event during the Cold War. It brought the citizens of the U.S. to the edge of their seats because, like the flip of a switch, their world could be turned upside down. John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev were fighting for their beliefs and the safety of their own country. It was once said that this event is when, “the Cold War got hot”. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the most significant in causing the most tensions because it was the closest to home the Cold War had gotten and it deeply impacted the citizens.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a frightening moment for the entire world. It started October 14th, 1962 after the Soviet Union planted nuclear missiles inn Cuba. The U.S. found out that these missiles were being planted without their knowledge, but the Soviet Union continued the construction of these nuclear missile sites, even after President Kennedy, the president of the U.S., sent out a warning against these weapons in Cuba. Even after this warning, Kennedy once again found out that the construction was still happening. Following the discovery of the ongoing construction, Kennedy wanted to meet with people at the White House to solve the problem that they were encountering. There were multiple sides during their talk about the missiles. Some of the people at the meeting wanted to take a more aggressive approach and destroy these missiles and then follow up with an attack. Kennedy eventually decided to quarantine Cuba. After Kennedy quarantined Cuba, there were many messages sent between the White House and the Kremlin to try and solve the problem. The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted for thirteen extremely tense days. At the end of these thirteen days, the Cuban Missile Crisis ended with an agreement between the United States and Soviet Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis greatly impacted history. It strengthened the bond between the United States and Soviet Union, showed people how to come to a
There were many outcomes and effects that developed from the Cuban Missile Crisis. Cuba stayed a Communist state, which allowed for it to be a valuable ally to the Soviet Union in the Americas (Result of the Cuban Missile Crisis). Also, it opened the way for Khrushchev to push for disarmament (Result of the Cuban Missile Crisis). This benefited the Soviet Union more than the United States, because they were behind the United States in nuclear arm power and capabilities (Result of the Cuban Missile Crisis). The way the crisis was resolved made many within the Soviet government and public see Khrushchev as weak, because he gave in too much to the United States’s demands which in their eyes made the Soviet Union look desperate and fragile (Result
