As we look through history and time, we see how far we have advanced and improved, not just in technology, but also in communications and relations between countries. Through these advancements, the world has been able to avoid such disasters, such as WWI. WWI is something we look at as horrific, with so many deaths for something so little; and makes many people question why countries would fight over such little land, and lose so many of their people. WWI had many contributions leading up to the war, and the main causes, in my eyes, are imperialism, nationalism, and alliances between countries. Leading up to the war was a time known as the Age of Imperialism. Almost all of europe was expanding overseas, setting up colonies, and taking over the land. Nationalism is having a pride for your country, a sense of loyalism. For America, we usually have a ton of Nationalism, like when we were attacked on 9-11. Before 9-11, many would say the day before you would rarely see an American Flag in families’ yards, but the day after, you would rarely see a house without a Flag. After 9-11, Americans had pride in their country, and they believed they were stronger than the rest of the world. Before WWI, many of the countries had this exact feeling towards their countries, and their home. Most of the countries’ people were willing to stand up for their country in the case of a war, and this gave a lot overconfidence in their country. Nationalism helped lead the way to WWI, because each country and its people had the idea that their country was better and stronger, and they were willing prove this through war if necessary, helping cause
