In recent months, the federal government has had their attention on a reoccurring issue. The use of cellular devices and other items that affect the drivers focus. The government recently tried to put a national ban on cellphone use, yet local government’s including Texas have spoken on this matter stating that a ban simply will not work. The reason behind Texas stating so, is a bill banning cellphone doesn’t make it through the system. Since the bill will not pass through the local government, local authorities have stepped into action to stop the use of cellphones. Local authorities have found clever methods to prevent the use of cellphones and to save lives. Furthermore, cellphone usage and driving while intoxicated can be compared because both involve the driver to be distracted and become a traffic hazard. Lastly, local authorities have found reasonable punishments for those using cellphones in banned areas. According to local authorities in Texas there is not a ban on cellphones while driving, but there are laws that drivers do not notice. Section. 545. 425 states that a driver that is under the age of 18 or …show more content…
According to the study, drivers who are intoxicated have a better chance to avoid an accident than a cellphone user. The reason behind the result are, when a driver is using a cellphone, their car can travel the length of a football field in the matter of 4.5 seconds. Drivers who were intoxicated tended to use the brakes more and stop sooner. As for the cellphone user, they do not recognize when to apply the brakes, resulting in an accident or death. Both driving while intoxicated and cellphone use are extremely dangerous to other drivers, but using a cellphone has a higher accident percent. Lastly local authorities and state officials are finding methods to penalize those using cellphones since there is not a ban on cellphones while
Many people have lost their lives on the road and caused other’s deaths because they were distracted with doing something while driving. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in distraction-related crashes (“Statistics on Texting & Cell Phone Use While Driving” n.d.). Distractions while driving that result in these accidents include texting/making a call or becoming intoxicated and having high blood alcohol concentration. Many laws have been brought forth to help regulate the amount of people drinking while driving and using a cell phone while driving. Not only do people put their own lives in danger, they are also putting other’s lives in danger. People who take part in these distractions are not being responsible when making these rash decisions while driving and creating a hazardous environment for those around them.
. . . Finally, the data do not indicate that the drivers were at fault in the collisions; it may be that cellular telephones merely decrease a driver’s ability to avoid a collision caused by someone else. (457) Pointing out that cell phones have benefits as well as risks, the authors do not recommend restrictions on their use while driving. Unfortunately, most states do not keep adequate records on the number of times phones are a factor in accidents. As of December 2000, only ten states were trying to keep such records (Sundeen 2). In addition, currently there is little scientific evidence comparing the use of cell phones with other driver
After analyzing how the brain and reaction time are severely effected by the distraction that cell phones cause, it is important to view the health effects that results from the car crashes. Injuries ranging from mild to severe, or even death, can occur as a direct result of crashing the vehicle while distracted by cell phone use. In the study by McEvoy, the objective was to explore the effect of drivers’ use of cell phones on road safety. In order to research
Today’s generation has become extremely dependent of their cell phones to a point where they are willing to risk their lives and those close to them. Texting while driving has become an extreme issue in modern society even though it has been present ever since the introduction of cellphones. Problems arising from the usage of cellphones while driving have raised awareness among the nations because the casualties resulting from accidents in which people were using their cellphones have reached extraordinary numbers in the past decades. My goal in this research paper is to alert my audience about the dangers that this act consists of and inform them about the current laws regarding this subject as well as numbers and statistics
As a result of millions of injuries and deaths among the people of our country, cell phone use, and more specifically texting while driving, has become a big issue. Since texting and driving is a big issue, there are active and upcoming ways to stop it. Throughout the recent years, there have been hundreds of campaigns as well as ads on television, and in magazines to convince people to stop the use of cell phones while driving. Technology in cars is also being built to address the issue of texting and driving behind the wheel. There needs to be steps taken to address the rising number of cell phone related accidents, and if these don’t adequately help the situation, then there needs to be law enforcement set up to keep people off of
The purpose of this study was to analyze the dangers of both the usage of cell phones and the consumption of alcohol while driving. Researchers wanted to see which one was more dangerous for the driver out of these two distractions. In the study that was conducted in “A Comparison of the Cell Phone Driver and the Drunk Driver” during the 2006 year, took 40 experienced adult drivers (25 men, 15 women) and put them through a three-day lab experiment. Using the PatrolSim high fidelity driving stimulator, participants went through three different driving situations; a baseline, driving with the BAC .08%, and using a cell phone while driving. The same test was used in each one, which allowed researchers to figure out which distraction was more
Use of cell phones while driving should be banned in all the places as it causes a lot of distraction, also it can cause some harm to the driver and also the persons or passengers near the driver and this can consequently lead to accidents. These cases are mostly prevalent on the young people. In the most instances, cell phone use while driving has been proven my many researchers as a very dangerous thing to partake (Jane et al 2001). In the recent times, the cases of fatal automobile accidents which are related to use of cell phones use while driving has been on the rise. The greater number of these cases have mostly involved the young people usually the people aged 25 years and below. A study which was carried recently shows that the reaction of a driver who is using a phone reduces dramatically increasing the accident risks and also tying up traffic in general,
Driving requires full attention and concentration on the road because, “when a driver becomes involved in a cell-phone conversation, attention is withdrawn from the processing of the information in the driving environment necessary for safe operation of the motor vehicle” (Strayer). The hands-free devices and cell phone conversation while driving are risky because those behaviors diverged the driver attention from the road. Many young people refused to believe the fact that even hands-free devices are dangerous and make excuses for using the cellphone while driving by invoking exceptionalism. Since it is impossible for all drivers to completely eliminated texting while driving, “textalyzer” may be the answer to alleviating fatal crashes caused by those who text while
The state of Texas needs more restrictive laws on use of hand held devices, such as cellphones or smartphones while driving to reduce the amount of distraction to drivers. Historically traffic laws across our country have changed over the years to increase public safety and decrease mortality and morbidity on our roadways. Mandatory seat belt laws, child restraint laws, as well as mandatory blood alcohol testing in many states are but a few of these examples. Through each of these examples, individual personal preference was outweighed by the greater safety outcome. One may dislike wearing a seatbelt, but not doing so, is against the law.
Cell phones have become the most used object in the world in people’s everyday lives. All around America, people are using these devices; from youth to senior citizens. Cell phones come with many benefits, one being applications that allow us to access the internet anytime, hold a great amount of storage and provide navigation across America without getting lost. However, applications are also a great distraction to the youth and adults who use them. Facebook, Twitter, picture editing, games and music take away our focus from the world around us. This becomes most apparent when we look at the problem of texting while driving. Often, we see on the news people losing their lives, taking someone else’s life, injuring others or themselves because they were texting and driving. Texting while driving is extremely dangerous and will continue to get worse until we begin to take personal responsibility to stop it.
Some states have made it illegal to drive while on a cell phone. With the use of cells phones on the road, it can cause problems that will effect the driver. Cell phones should not be illegal to drive with. Three reasons why cells phones not be illegal is because it is a distraction for the drivers, it causes multiple problems, and it effects the people around the driver. Cell phone can become a distraction for someone who is behind the wheel. The reason why cell phones are a distraction is because of the new smart phones. Smart phones allows the driver to be able to get on the Internet. While someone is driving, they could go on their smart phones and look to see what is happening on social media. A driver could also text someone
The use of cell phone is very dangerous for drivers while driving. The drivers are supposed to be alert and concentrated to their ambient surrounding. The use of cell phone catch their attention and make them less alert to their surrounding which can lead to serious destruction. The use of cell phone is more dangerous than the use of alcohol while driving. Because it took half a second longer for a cell phone users to react than a normal person and one third of a second longer than a persons in drunken condition.
In conclusion, many people do not realize that being intoxicated while driving, using cellular phones and teenage drivers may bring serious injuries to everybody. Some people may enjoy drinking without care until they get into car accident, which can even result in
Texting and driving has become a recent issue in today’s world. Many teens, as well as adults, have formed a habit of texting while driving. Texting while driving is distracting and the possibilities of getting into a car accident while texting and driving are higher than if you are not. Texting while driving has gotten so ridiculous the government has realized this is an ongoing problem that is causing accidents. In attempting to prevent this, new laws have been passed, making the use of cell phones while driving a car, illegal. However, too many people do not respect or pay attention to this law which put many people lives at risk. There are several disadvantages of texting while driving, including jail time/prison, fatal crashes, and loss of lives.
Although many of these new technologies are possible and useful because of the cell phone, there are some downsides that come with this device. One downside is the danger of cell phones usage while operating mechanical vehicles such as cars. Because cell phones let us be so mobile, they also let us talk in situations where we are doing something else. While a person is in the middle of a discussion, he can be distracted from anything else he is doing. According to study published in "the New England Journal of Medicine," the chances of getting into an accident while on a cell phone are increased by "four hundred percent (qtd. in Hua)." Another study that was done by scientists in the "transport research laboratory" suggested that driving while using a cell phone is more hazardous then driving under the influence of alcohol at the permitted blood alcohol content level. The study says that a person on the cell phone reacts half a second slower than an alert driver (qtd. in Wrolstad). Considering the results of the research, more legislation is needed for cell phone usage, possibly banning or limiting the usage of cell phones during situations calling for a person's full attention.
