Aerobic cellular respiration and photosynthesis have a myriad of similarities and differences. They are both alike and different because of the purpose of the processes, how they function, their location, and the reactants and products for each process.
Cellular respiration and photosynthesis have several differences. In photosynthesis, plants and some bacteria use light energy, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen. On the other hand, cellular respiration is the process in which glucose is broken down and converted into energy, specifically ATP. Eukaryotes like plants and animals carry out cellular respiration, however, only plants and some bacteria carry out photosynthesis. Aerobic cellular respiration uses oxygen and carries out all the three stages: glycolysis, krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Since it carries out all three stages, it takes place in the mitochondria. On the other head, anaerobic cellular respiration takes place in the cytoplasm because it only goes through glycolysis. It allows prokaryotes or other organisms without a mitochondria to produce some ATP. It also helps produce some ATP when our bodies run out of oxygen.
Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are dependent on each other because the products of one process is used by the other as reactants. Photosynthesis produces oxygen and glucose, so cellular respiration uses them as reactants to make carbon dioxide, water, and ATP. Cellular respiration uses the products of photosynthesis: glucose and oxygen, as reactants to make ATP. In this process, carbon dioxide and water are produced as waste products. ADP and Pi are also reactants, but they are made during the stages, like when a phosphate group leaves the ATP we use to power glycolysis or when carbon bonds are broken. ADP and Pi do not come from photosynthesis. Plants that carry out photosynthesis also carry out cellular respiration. Heterotrophs that can’t produce their own sugar also can carry out cellular respiration. They obtain glucose by eating autotrophs, eating what autotrophs made, or other organisms that consumed autotrophs. From there, it breaks down the glucose.
