However, this conception of traditional mas does not represent the reality and range of the festival. Therefore it is unfair to classify specific characters as the hallmark of traditional mas when independent Mas bands, like Vulgar Fraction, who stray from performing these characters are arguably more “traditional” in their methods of creation than any other contemporary mas band as they place emphasis on forgotten skills such as wire-bending and costume-making. Yet, this begs the question: Is there a desire from the public for independent mas bands in contemporary Carnival?

The ethnography that I choose to read was titled Celtic Tides: Traditional Music in a New Age by Martin Melhuish. The book is written from the perspective of Melhuish as he talks about places he has been and memories that he had from growing up in Ireland. Celtic music has seen a huge rise in popularity worldwide over the past century due to mass media and spectacular musicians that brought it into the public spotlight. Melhuish’s goal was to find out, what is the “Celtic thing”? Why does it touch our hearts and give us vivid images of times long past? The author begins the book by investigating Celtic music in the most unlikely place, the country capital of the United States Nashville, Tennessee.
In my introduction chapter (chapter one), as well as the aforementioned introduction to my topic, I present an historical overview. This chapter gives the reader a clear picture of my goals in writing this dissertation and of the history of Irish immigration and their involvement in the American music industry. In Chapter Two, I look at the literature surrounding my research questions and take into consideration the research of other scholars. Chapter Three presents my personal research. I have included two interviews, one with fiddler, John Carty and the other with fiddler, Frank Gavin from the band, De Danann. Following the interviews, I present an ethnography taken from a gig performed by John Carty and his band, At the Racket. This ethnography
Music is big part of Native American Culture. It is used in many different ways, such as expressing one’s feelings or through the use of self-expression. There are unique collection of instruments that are played in ceremonial events, recreation, and even through healing. Some of these instruments are drums, flutes, rattles, and other percussion instruments. The voice is also used quite a lot and may even be the most important one because it is the backbone of music made in Native American Cultures.
We are Stargazing in 35mm, a Seattle area genre-fluid space rock band. Our sound is very diverse, and we can alter our set list to fit well with almost any band. We are still new to the music scene, but we drew about 40 people at the Northwest Folklife Festival and about the same amount at our album release party. We have played at auctions, farmers markets, graduations, battle of the bands and some small local venues. We would be very interested in opening for local or passing though bands.
Once you hire a renowned DJ to play music in your event, it will attract thousands of people from Las Vegas and the surrounding regions. For instance, if you hire a famous nightclub DJ for concerts in your
An upbeat tempo, clapping, dancing, and traditional foods casted an authentic festive Irish atmosphere at O’Reilly’s Pub on Friday, April 15, 2016. Friday night, my boyfriend drove down to surprise me and I surprised him by taking him with me to attend the Traditional Irish Session at O’ Reilly’s Pub. We arrived there around 7:15 and the parking lot was already starting to fill up. There was mostly adults, but there were also a large amount of families at this event. As soon as we walked into the pub, the loud Celtic music transformed the atmosphere. The pub was somewhat crowded, but everyone seemed to be in a lively mood which projected an energetic anticipation for what was to come. The musicians were set up in front of a small stage on the
Due to the decline in revenue for the recording industry, live performance now more than ever before is the main source of income for most musicians and performers. Live Victorian music is featured at the centre of many tourism campaigns, encompassing local and regional festivals, venues and touring artists. The key reasons why live music remains important to the sector include the ongoing connections with an audience, live performance as a promotion and marketing tool, principal means of income and the opportunity to export
In conclusion, the change in performance seen in the last three decades of the WFF shows that the idea of the “folk” is tangible and is subject to change. One of the principle reason that its definition changes is because of the underlying idea that folk music is music which features exoticism from the “normal” repertoire which constitutes a Canadian identity. Therefore, while in the 1970, the English ballads were considered different, as the performance frequency of the English ballads were growing, its integration into the Canadian sound/music identity was being solidified. Hence, the three decades of folk festival shows that this continuous search for the exotic and fusion is due in part of a
This semester I have experience many live musical performances. Some of these performances have let me down but for the most part, these performances have been everything I ever expected. My two favorite performances this semester were Festival Vallenato and Ultra Music Festival. Although these two types of music are different in every way possible, the people and the performers are exactly where I feel I am in the right place.
