Censorship In Society

Censorship is the assassination of ideas. It causes people to be ignorant which makes them not pay any attention to the world around them. Many people see what is happening right in front of them but choose to not direct their attention, not knowing if something terrible is going on. Censorship conceals all the things that would make people have their own voice. It prevents all of the ideas that are made from people to be heard.

Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.

“Censorship reflects a society’s lack of confidence in itself.” This quote from Potter Stewart exemplifies how censorship is used to control society and the freedom of speech. When freedom of speech and expression are limited, everyone is very similar and there are no differences in society, which does not help society grow as a whole. No one has any contradicting ideas, which sounds like a good thing, but realistically is not. The expression of ideas and ideologies often forms groups in a society, and people look to these groups for comfort and social validation.

Censorship has been adopted in many societies as well as the governments of our world. As the history of the world expands we see many countries try to censor what their citizens see. When the countries do this they are not assisting the country, they are leading it into a self-destruction. A good example of this would be America in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. This nation is destroyed in a futuristic war that only lasts a couple of minutes, if not seconds. Other fitting examples include the Nazi regime and the Soviet Union, both governments censoring their population in what they could read, write, and see. As we know both of these governments did not succeed and ultimately were obliterated and the countries were punished. Government censorship not only wounds the ability for people to grow and expand in their thought process, but it eventually causes the ultimate self-destruction of the nation.

Censorship is the act of filtering what an audience of something hears and sees. This is an effective method for mothers to protect their children from being exposed to things they do not fully understand, however it can be harmful once it is put into the hands of the government, because it crosses some moral and ethical lines. It violates the people’s right to freedom of expression. It would also make it much simpler to hide information from the people or to give them false information in the form of propaganda. Therefore, censorship is both positive and negative and its power should be left in the hands of parents rather than the government.

Freedom of expression is a right given to fuel people’s imaginative minds that are occupied with different thoughts and opinions. Censorship is only an obstacle, preventing people from expressing their inner beliefs by replacing it with fake ones. Censorship actively prohibits and suppresses people’s opinions to speak up in society freely and openly. It restricts the common adult or child of any gender from being themselves and fighting for what they believe in. Censoring speech and expression only establish greater problems than the one attempting to be resolved that both prevent people from expressing themselves and cover the ears of those who are willing to listen.

Imagine if a society controlled what people see, hear, or did. This type of censorship is harmful to a society. Everyone needs to understand each other’s freedoms. This issue is discussed in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In this society, they can not read certain things and people decide to commit suicide over it. Censorship takes away our rights as individuals. It violates the First Amendment, keeps people from learning, and gives the government total control.

Censorship has been around for millions of years. Although censorship is still practised in some countries today, almost anyone would agree that censorship is never the right answer; as we have seen in the past, it has seldomly ever works out. Which is why it is so concerning that schools are starting to allow censorship in classrooms. As a result of this, the world is seeing an alarming amount of young millennials who are fresh into the workforce, expecting to always be catered to. More and more millennials are not being properly prepared for the real world due to censorship in schools; schools have been giving in and catering to students by allowing the censoring of books and microaggressions in the classroom, as a result the students are being taught that the world will cater to everyone, which is very inaccurate.

Censorship occurs when information is forbidden; for example, in books, movies, newspapers, and the Internet. Books are banned when they contain objectionable language, sexual content, political content, and in the case of government censorship, knowledge. Some people argue that censorship is necessary to protect children from explicit language or sex scenes, and to preserve morals or religious values. Those against censorship argue that historical facts shouldn’t be censored, so that people can learn from history. Opponents also claim that censorship invalidates their intellectual freedom; which the United Nations proclaimed as a fundamental human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In todayś society we face many objections, as to how things are and how it will effect others. Essentially, we can see censorship and other objections occuring more often throughtout our history. Movies, books, Plays, etc. are currently and continuously being revised and looked over for the reason of censorships that happen throughout the school in thus nation. This comenly is occuring more throughtout schools. As parents, and teachers don´t want to obeject there kids or students to things that ¨need¨ or should be censored; such as bad language, vulgur meanings/saying and more often sex and drugs. Which under many advisments could be a nessesarry thing. Overall I do not agree to the censorship in school to an extent.

The act of banning materials is always justified through the eyes of the censor and only the censor. They are rigid to the point that they will not see the other sides of the spectrum. The conformists attempt to censor any challenge to their belief systems even though there is no law respecting any belief or religion. School administrations and teachers often ponder on who should decide what kinds of texts students read. Modern censorship issues arise more frequently as teachers are pressed to introduce more current and culturally diverse materials.
