Societies contain large varieties of beliefs, ideas, and concepts. These attributes make up a society and can spread or modify notions and thoughts. Censorship in a society diminishes equity and the spread of new ideas. Censorship is more harmful to a society because it invalidates human rights, obstructs education, and hinders the truth. Human rights such as freedom of speech or freedom to attain information is hindered by censorship. Being able to have an “access to information is a human right, not to be tampered with, not to be controlled in any way” (DiMarco). This presents the initial thought that everyone is equal. Censorship rejects this sense of equality by censoring information to certain groups of individuals. In an event where a book is banned, people may “outrage that this, or any other, book would be banned” (DiMarco). This presents a problem …show more content…

It is harmful because “in the process of acquiring knowledge and searching for the truth, students can learn to discriminate” (American Library Association). This is a negative effect that censorship causes. Censorship pays a toll on student minds that may lead to negative thoughts such as discrimination. By shielding the truth, students are forced “to make decisions rationally and logically in light of the evidence” (American Library Association). Due to withheld information, students will have more of a difficult time when making important life decisions. This will alter their views and perspectives in ways that could impact negatively. In societies, censorship is more harmful because it invalidates human rights, obstructs education, and hinders the truth. This ultimately has a negative effect on children's minds and the minds of the future. Societies are full of ideas that may be seen as intense; However, this can help mature student minds and lead to proper development that can create more advanced
