As a taxpayer of Morgan County’s 3rd District and a parent whose children attend CHS and CMS; I would like to put forth my opinion on the generous fund that Mr. Wayne Solomon has left for Central High School. I regret that I will not be able to attend the meeting that has been scheduled to discuss the issue.
In my opinion Mr. Solomon was trying to give back to his Alma Mater and his community. This fund that is being offered would be a great benefit for our children and their education at CHS. We are currently behind in technology and other areas compared to other schools in our state/nation.

Even though I agree with tightening our budget and living within our means (even if it means not allowing students to use ink/paper) I cannot fathom why receiving this fund is even in question; especially when last week’s newspaper specified the need for more funds for the Morgan County School System. I cannot fathom why any donation/fund would not be accepted for our students (any students) to better their education.
I believe that it is common sense to see that ANY money that is coming into the school (any school) will benefit the other schools in the county.
This is not a small amount of money that is being offered, this is a large amount that will be there each year…..very needed money for our students and their education. Through the years this fund could benefit several students that walk the halls at CHS.
Even though the fund is specifically for CHS doesn’t mean that the other schools in the county will not

Although this case shed some light, it failed under the federal Equal Protection analysis because education was not a “fundamental right” recognized by the Constitution and because the educationally disadvantaged poor did not constitute a “suspect classification.” The Court refused to overturn the school finance system on grounds of inequality. The second largest budget line for this initiative is Raise Fair Student Funding (FSF). Raise Fair Student Funding ($33.6M in 2016 and $59.7M until 2019) is given directly to schools in their budgets. If the funding was divided equally amongst schools, each school would receive roughly $357,446.81, which would be relatively $762.58 per student. However, this funding is associated with the FSF formula that change yearly (see appendix ____).
The districts argued that the legislature failed to provide students with proper funding for academic needs; a sizeable gap has been created between the wealthy and poor school districts; and the school districts were having to tax at the maximum rate just to provide a basic education to students. I think that any school that receives funding from any source has an obligation to obey the conditions that were given. If the school does not accept the conditions provided the school does not have to accept the money. Although in this case it is more complicated because new conditions have suddenly come up and were not part of the agreement before. Previously there was no condition requiring the school to have a LGBTQ group, however the government now wants to make that a new rule. The school depends on the government for money so the school must either accept the new conditions or find a new funder.

Although from the current view of the financial statements, it is an added expense to provide these scholarships, but I see it more from a positive impact to our long term goal. I see us educating a society according to how we do things that will later impact our profits positively. I would be more concerned if we were looking at this investment from a short term perspective. But since we're looking at a long term relationship, I believe this is something we should be doing.
