For the sterile skill video validation, I performed a Central Line Blood Draw. Looking at the course rubric, I can evaluate myself on the five course components – clinical judgement, communication, collaboration, safety, and professional identity. In relation to clinical judgement, I thought aloud during my video, I demonstrated the appropriate skill, and I prioritized the intervention. In relation to communication, not much communication occurred, as I did not have a real patient or another team member during the video validation. Although I did not have a real patient with me, I did introduce myself and my role, as well as documented my care clearly, concisely, and accurately. In the hospital setting, I would also demonstrate therapeutic communication with the patient. Similarly to communication, this video validation did not require me to collaborate with other team members. Compared to the other four course components, I would state that this …show more content…
While I would normally discard of the blood right after drawing the 5-10 mL of discarded blood, I did not because the sharps container was not within reaching distance. Aware that the sharps container stood too far away, I did not want to risk pulling on the patient’s central line, in an attempt to reach for the container. In the future, I will check for my sharps container prior to beginning the skill, as to prevent the same event from occurring. For myself, I have one critique. I would like to work on communicating with the patient more while I am performing a skill. While it is difficult to do during a video validation, as no one can respond, therapeutic communication is essential to nursing. By communication with the patient, it could reduce anxiety, increase knowledge, and enhance a trusting bond. Overall, I am satisfied with my video
At Phlebotomy on Wheels we provide solutions to our clients' problems. We are experts with over 8 years of experience. Even though we were able to retrieve the blood on the first stick with this patient example,I am sure it would have benefited the agency and the patient before the patient was discharge, enabling the agency to know the patient levels and proceed according. We look forward to working with the team and increasing revenue, patient satisfaction and improving the work flow
Background: Week one skills lab was a hectic day in which I was taught the following sills : Bed bath , the making of an occupied and unoccupied bed , and protective restraints. As a CNA, I have perfomed these skills many times but it was nice to review them in a classroom setting.
The Therapeutic communication video began with the group stating their personal interpretation of therapeutic communication. It was agreed upon as a two-way process that involved the patient and the interviewer. It is centered on the patient and intended to achieve specific goal set for the patient. The professional relationship is to be firmly
Communication is usually taken for granted in our every day to day living as we use it without thought. Good communication skills are needed in the workplace and especially with nursing staff to and from patients when giving first hand care. Good or bad communication can make there experience within the health care setting a positive or negative one and can leave a lasting impression. A good health care provider can use there communication skills to put a patient at ease with a few comforting words or gestures, a lack of positive communication in the health care setting could leave the patient feeling neglected, ignored and not valued as a patient.
Unit 1- D1: Explain how communication skills can be used in health or care environment in effective communication
Within a health care setting communication is a necessity. This communication not only includes the need for professional communication but also the way in which information is shared to the patient and to other healthcare workers. Another important aspect of health care worker such as a nurse is the effectiveness off a handover. Within the video, Effective Communication in nursing these three aspects of communication (Professional communication, provision of information and handover) were seen and will be analysed further, within this essay. These will be analysed through the three aspects, the care of the patient, the image of the individual nurse and the health outcomes of the patient. All of these three aspects of communication are vitally important to the overall patient needs.
This report aims to discuss the communication observed between the Nurse and Patient portrayed in the video. There are two scenarios in which the Nurse addresses the patient’s concerns. The patient’s response is influenced by the Nurse’s approach. In a health care setting, a personal, empathic yet professional approach is most effective in communication from Nurse to Patient. Furthermore this report assesses the therapeutic techniques used by the Nurse to effectively interact with the patient.
In nursing practice, communication is essential, and good communication skills are paramount in the development of a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. This aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of communication in nursing, demonstrating how effective communication facilitates a therapeutic
As a nurse, communication is an essential and important factor to building a therapeutic relationship between a nurse and patient as it is the difference between average and excellent nursing care, as it helps maintain a good quality of life and allows nurses’ and patients to interact and provide comfort when needed. The importance of good communication can become apparent with patients especially when they are in the hospital, as it helps the nurses build a positive relationship with patients and helps overcome barriers including physical, psychological and social. A therapeutic relationship is built on many factors which include both verbal and non-verbal communication which helps maintains the relationship and strengthens it due to the positive impact it has not only on the patient’s experience but also the nurse’s.
The purpose of this journal is to reflect on my experience and skills gained during my clinical placement at Ben Taub Hospital. On my first clinical day, I was excited and nervous at the same time. My first placement was in the PREOP/PACU area. I was assigned to help a patient who had been in the PACU area going on 2 days. Normally, once the patient comes from surgery they are only in the PACU area for a short period of time before they are discharged home or given a bed in another area of the hospital. This particular patient still had not received an assignment for a bed. The physicians would make their rounds to come check on him daily. The patient was a 28-year-old Hispanic male, non-English speaking, he had a hemicolectomy. He had a NG tube, urinary Foley catheter, and a wound vac. My preceptor had just clocked in and she needed to check on the patient’s vitals and notes from the previous nurse. Once she introduced me to the patient and explained while I was there, she then asked me to check his vitals. (Vital signs indicate the body’s ability to regulate body temperature, maintain blood flow, and oxygenate body tissues. Vital signs are important indicators of a client’s overall health status (Hogan, 2014). I froze for a quick second. I have practiced taking vitals numerous of times and I knew I could do it correctly. I started with the temperature first, when I was quickly corrected on a major mistake I had made by my preceptor. I HAD FORGOT TO WASH MY HANDS and PUT
Discuss a clinical experience in which you had to incorporate one or more learning styles such as visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. Explain the outcomes and how you created an effective learning experience.
Being a student in the UW nursing school, I can not only take advantage of the special classroom settings, but also the advanced technology. With classroom settings designed for active learning, it gives me opportunities to share my thoughts and ideas with other students. Instead of listening passively, we would work as a team to find out the best solution for patients. Besides, the unique state-of-the-art technology allows me to practice and apply my knowledge in a simulated hospital setting. Since every practice is recorded, I can take a look at those videos several times and self-reflect. Thus, I can correct my mistakes and improve.
Communication is one of the basic survival skills of human and also a fundamental part of nursing. Effective communication would help to promote a positive nurse-client relationship which is crucial for the delivery of quality nursing care (Sheppard, 1993; McCabe 2003).
When I first started, I had concern with hurting my partner while doing a blood specimen collection. I am also concerned about not getting blood on the first stick. When I didn’t get the blood on the first stick, I feel really bad for my partner, because I know how hurt it is to get needlestick twice or more and if we did it a couple more time, they will feel uncomfortable. Best practices and strategies I can implement to reduce my concerns would be: relax my patient’s arm, follow the right procedure and stick on the correct vein.
Nurses must assess a patient’s communication needs with respect to their age, gender, culture, developmental status and be able to modify their care related to these needs. This also is a consideration when communicating with those around us daily.
