In life, there are many circumstances, in fact multiple in every second we breathe, where we must make a decision or formulate an idea or position on a situation. Within the time of this decision, there comes a point where there is a level of certainty and or doubt that persists. By definition, certainty and doubt are antonyms; however, there can be relationship of certainty and doubt where they are able to coincide with one another in a very fragile state, but as soon as a certain position turns even slightly doubtful, the subject may never claim full certainty. In other words, once doubt is presented, there cannot be total certainty. Confidence is a major factor in determining the relationship between certainty and doubt. I personally have been through the course of certainty and …show more content…
During my sophomore year, I was placed fourth among all Alto 1’s in the All-Region process. I had never advanced to Pre-Area so I was very nervous to be among the best singers in my region in order to receive a position to advance to the state auditions. In my preparation for this audition, I worked tirelessly on the musical selections and my sight-reading abilities both by myself and with my voice lessons teacher. Due to my being placed fourth out of fifteen, I was very confident that I would have a good chance of making the cut, as they take the top five. I was certain that my abilities would be able to take me to the Area auditions because I was already among the top five. I knew I was one of the best at sight-reading and therefore I mainly focused on a certain musical selection that I could never perfect. I knew all the songs, I knew the process, I was placed fourth, and I truly believed I was going to state. I was certain of it. Then, I got a cold. The morning I woke up and my throat felt scratchy (I have a strange ability to catch a cold at the worst times and be able to detect it very
Starting with the background knowledge and miscellaneous information that gives us a better understanding of what goes on in scientific research, Barry gives us a comparison between certainty and uncertainty. Describing certainty, the author uses words with good connotation, “Certainty creates strength. Certainty gives one something upon which to lean.” The words to be looking at here are strength and an action that can be done with certainty that feels supportive. When describing uncertainty the author uses words with a bad connotation, sort of making connotation seem the better option, “Uncertainty creates weakness. Uncertainty makes on tentative if not fearful, and tentative steps, even when in the right direction, may not overcome significant obstacles.” The word
Father Flynn states, "Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone."
All humans have specific emotions they go through in their daily lives. These emotions may vary from happiness to sadness, or from excitement to doubt. They are natural and healthy to accept, however when they get in the way of daily life, problems emerge. “My Doubt” is a poem published in early 2016 by Jane Hirshfield, an American poet who has written several poems and books. The poem is about the negative effects of doubt and it reflects upon the daily life of a speaker who doubts everything she does and everything that happens to her.
The idea about human to reconcile the uncertainties of the past with a new or present situation. Throughout the year I studied the texts about, novel 1984 by George Orwell, a film Good Will Hunting and Shakespeare's play Hamlet. In these texts because the characters' uncertainty about the past, they won’t succeed in future situations in their lives. I'm referring from the text of how these uncertainties can have an effect for these protagonists throughout the story until they reach tougher situations.
Voltaire once said, “Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one.” We live in a world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people’s tendency to make quick decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people’s fear of uncertainty from having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and economics, have admitted that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is inaccurate in neglecting to mention that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion of validity.
In the 1943 film “Shadow of a Doubt” by Alfred Hitchcock the action in this movie is more important than any other topic. This film was a mix between action and mystery which grabs the attention of the viewer. Uncle Charlie played a big role in the mystery part of the film by hiding from the police for the kills that he committed. When uncle Charlie went to his sister’s home, no one knew that he was the killer until little charlie figured it out and helped the detectives catch him. Little charlie got her uncle to leave town so that her mother wouldn’t find out about the murders her brother committed. Uncle Charlie thought that hiding at his sister’s house and playing it off as visiting would get him away from the police and no one would know of his crimes. At the beginning of the movie when the detectives outside Charlie’s house I knew that something was going on, so it got me engaged into the movie. When the killing started being said I was sceptical, kind of thinking “no it’s someone else” but later on in the movie when everything was piecing together I knew it was uncle Charlie and it was shocking. There are many things I like about this film, which is the acting in the characters. The acting is amazing, usually in old movies the acting isn’t that great but, I feel like the
Does certainty actually provide security, or does it set one for failure? Does doubt cause negativity or does it prepare one for the future? The idea whether certainty or doubt causes the fulfillment of dreams, goals and the future as questioned many. Certainty creates security and assurances, but is anything certain? Nothing in the world is ever certain; one’s world can be flipped upside down in the matters of days, hours, minutes and even a split of a second. Unlike certainty, doubt allows one to know there is a chance that the odds are against one. William Lyon Phelps supports certainty as a factor for success, while Bertrand Russell favors doubt because it creates comfort and prepares one for reality. Using
Most of us like to imagine our beliefs and opinions are logical and objective; however, the reality is that we tend to pay more attention to the information which supports our original ideas. And at the same time, we are trying to ignore the information which despites us. This process is called confirmation bias, and it exists in our daily lives.
When a state of probability remains undetermined, we often feel compelled to define it. We desire certainty, so we obtain it through whichever way we see fit, even when it is unattainable or harmful to do so. When we imagine
While these two emotions appear to be opposites, they work in harmony with each other helping people achieve their goals. Doubt allows people to explore other options and other outcomes in their actions. Overconfidence blinds people from exploring other possibilities in their choices.. The State Employees Credit Union encourages people to have some doubt in making purchases. They encourage people to wait 30 days before making a large purchase for self enjoyment or leisure.
My junior year of high school I decided to compete in the Miss Washington City pageant after winning first attendant (second place) the previous year. I prepared to fullest of my ability this upcoming pageant. I bought a new gown, practiced my interviewing, and of course forced my clumsy self to walk in high heels. Take my words for it, high heels and myself do not mix. I spent a lot of hours preparing for this pageant. When it was all over, myself and the other contestants were standing on stage waiting for the judges to announce the winner, I knew I had this in the bag. However, the bag was ripped out from my grasp and I was awarded with second place
Many characters in passages motivated themselves to abolish self-doubt and uncertainty to get an upper hand in their difficulties In Heroes Every Child Should Know: Perseus by Hamilton Wright Mabie, “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, and Refugee by Alan Gratz and displayed how characters can be confident and keep moving forward to overcome uneasiness and to trust themselves. In these three texts, Perseus was confident to move on in his adventure, the speaker in “I, Too” wanted to achieve equality by being brave without being unsure and Josef and Mahmoud getting on their journey to get to America by making hard decisions. To begin, in Heroes Every Child Should Know: Perseus, Perseus didn’t fall into the trap of self-doubt, but removed it. For example,
In summary, doubt has resulted in many astounding achievements that are still recognizable to this day. The relationship between certainty and doubt have shaped our world and have resulted in many changes for both the better and the worse. Nevertheless, to deny the fact that one had a greater impact on society than the other would be a mistake. Unlike with certainty, doubt is what allowed great minds, like our founding fathers and the architects of the Panama Canal, to prevail and be recognized today because their efforts and creations were driven by the belief that “it can always be better.”
Why is doubt not a pleasant condition? I believe that every individual doubt about their actions. It’s not as pleasant, but that’s just how life is. It is good to second guess yourself on something that you’re not sure if it is right or wrong because there’s occasions where us as humans tend to just take actions by impulse without knowing the consequences. A human is always going to have doubt and manage to live with it. No one is perfect which it means that at least every person in the world has doubt about their actions.
In the movie Doubt, the idea of certainty versus doubt is a central theme to the story. Doubt and certainty are
