Pebbles Lafleur05/15/2018HS115My Scope of PracticeAs many people know, there are steps into making into the medical field world. There are still certifications and levels to have under your belt to move up. Many people start as a CNA, then LPN, RN and so on and so forth. However, currently, I am enrolled in school to become a CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) and hopefully adding phlebotomy under my belt as well. Nevertheless, before all this to happen, there is a process to go by and complete it accordingly. To be competitive in the medical field marketplace, all medical assistants have to be certified through the AMA. Expansion of Physician Assistant (PA) programs across the United States occurred rapidly during the 1970s following the introduction of the profession in the 1960s. According to Hooker et al. (2010), the first era of the development of PA programs was followed by a decline in the 1980s. This was due in large part to a belief by the Graduate Medical Education Advisory Committee that there would be a surplus of physicians in the 1990s. Contrarily, there was a still a large discrepancy in the number of accessible providers and providers themselves which continues to this day. Many saw the cost effective advantage of training PAs and seized the opportunity
The biggest challenge that Physician Assistances face is when a patient questions their competency or their ability to care for them. PA’s are one of the youngest allied health fields and some people are unaware of the role of a physician assistant. The best way to reassure the patient that they are being properly taken care of is to educate the patient on the topic of Physician Assistant. The first Physician Assistant program started in 1960 in the military, to help with the growing need for primary care doctors (Mittman). Physician Assistance must first obtain a four year degree with a competitive GPA of 3.6 or
Active membership was opened to any practicing medical assistant who achieved AAMA certification. The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) was engaged as the test consultant for the AAMA certification examinations. Responsibility for the accreditation of one- and two-year medical assisting programs was transferred from the AMA’s Council on Medical Education to the AMA-sponsored but independently operated Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA). The AAMA Endowment’s Curriculum Review Board remained the recommending body. Revised Essentials of an Accredited Educational Program for the Medical Assistant were accepted by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
In this case, although the error started from the transmission of the discharge note to the home health care agency, Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant made number of mistakes in terms of clinical practice and delegation. First of all, completion and accuracy of patient’s physical therapy record is a professional responsibility of a supervising Physical therapist.1(p4) However, the PT failed to read the hospital discharge referral and documented incomplete and inaccurate plan of care. As a result, important information such as un-cemented prosthesis in situ and weight bearing limitations were not documented. In addition to that PTA elected to follow a protocol for cemented hip arthroplasty without referring back to PT for the missing information in the assessment. According to Texas Board of Physical Therapy examiners rule, “PTA may not specify and/or perform definitive (decisive, conclusive, final) evaluative and assessment procedures.”1(p5) Hence, it was also a mistake of the PTA to conclude the assessment and elect the inappropriate plan of care.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is trending and is set to grow tremendously. This is seen very strongly in the outlook for CNAs as well as E.V.S., Medical Assistants, Phlebotomy and more. Indeed, the increase is projected to be as much as 20% by 2020, which is well above the national average. In real terms, this means that some 300,000 jobs are set to be created. This is, of course, a fantastic benefit, as is the fact that salary growth expectations also stand at 19%, CNAs or E.V.S., do not require a post-secondary degree and they are some of the highest paid in that category of people, and their salary is set to grow significantly. With this positive outlook on the health care industry job market, Lights of Zion is seeking to expand our existing programs to remove barriers & prepare more individuals to be trained to enter this industry.
As the physician assistant (PA) profession becomes more proliferative in the United States the role of the PA in various healthcare settings changes. There is now an increased need for PAs in all medical specialties. It is my pleasure to write on behalf of Micole Pidgeon’s application to the physician assistant program of her choice. We have discussed her decision to pursue graduate study as a physician assistant; I support her decision to take her dedication and skills to the next level. Over the last year, I came to know Micole at Parkland where she has become one of our most experienced scribes in the urgent care department where I function as a physician assistant.
