In the book Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, there are a lot of examples of courage. I think being brave is when you are not afraid to do anything if it will help someone in need. It is when you do the right thing even when it will not benefit you. Many characters demonstrate courage, but three acts in particular stuck out to me. One is Isabel who is the protagonist of the book. The young girl is resilient, and as brave as a bull. She is Mr. and Mrs. Lockton’s slave. Another character is Hannah who is the wife of one of the loyalists’ soldiers, and she has been staying with the Locktons and working for them with the slave girl. The last character who shows true resolve is one of the Patriots in the town. He is a brave bookstore owner and you could say that he is a fearless friend of Isabel. This man is not afraid to do something illegal if he knows it will help the cause. Those characters show grit in the story and stand up when others refuse to.
The main character, Isabel, shows courage in the book when she risks her own freedom and independence to save her friend Curzon. He was a slave but then became a soldier and had a run in with the Red Coats. While the slave

Isabel is looking at the books when the polite bookstore possessor looks at her and realizes that she is an educated slave. He calls her over and gives her a patriotic book called Common Sense. “This is for you. Don’t let your mistress see it” (230). He knows he will be in huge trouble if anyone finds out he gave her the book because he is determined. “He raised his finger to his lips in a last warning. ‘Shhhhhh’” (231)! This also shows that he knows there could be extreme consequences to this action but he does it because he is devoted to his cause. The young bookstore owner shows a colossal amount of courage like a lion in this
Courage is conveyed through the characters’ actions in the book To Kill A Mockingbird and the movie The Help. Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird is a white, Southern lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama. He adamantly defends Tom Robinson, a negro who had allegedly raped a white woman, even knowing that his prejudiced county would convict him. This exemplifies courage because a white man to seeking equality for a black man was not accepted in their time period, a place of extreme racial segregation. Yet, Atticus defended Tom already knowing that he will lose. In The
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson tells the story of 13-year-old Isabel, a slave during Revolutionary War times. Miss Mary Finch was the previous owner of Isabel and her 5-year-old sister, Ruth. She had promised the girls freedom (from slavery) in her will. Despite this, after Miss Mary’s death, her nephew, Robert Finch sells the girls to a malicious Loyalist couple living in New York City. While Isabel is figuring out the city, she meets Curzon Bellingham, a slave with a passion for the Rebel cause, who tells her that if she provided them with information about the Loyalist’s activities, she would be helped to escape back to Rhode Island with her sister.
In the novel Chains, Laurie Halse Anderson portrays a slave girl at the height of the Revolutionary War. The book shows what life was like for a slave girl- Isabel. Throughout this book, you see the horrors and trials of a slave through her eyes. The book refutes many assumptions about slavery in the Revolutionary War’s time. Laurie Halse Anderson shows her disgust about slavery through Isabel’s feelings, and through the many traumatic experiences Isabel has to overcome.
In the book, Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, both Isabel and Ruth lived a slave’s life. Their quality of life varied in the three places they had stayed. Each place they stayed of course had they’re downfalls and some had small perks, but no place was nothing like home. Since the two girls mom was stripped away from the girls leaving them with no one else to protect them, the girls had no other choice then to become a slave. The girls slaved at three places throughout the book.
Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a slave and having to work for somebody and listen to their every command and follow through with it? Well if you have, then you might know how Isabel felt. She had to listen to somebody tell her what to do and pity her like she was a wild animal because if you had dark skin, you were basically a wild animal. Slaves were treated differently in different areas and had different jobs to do. It all depended on the location you were in. Throughout the book, Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Isabel went to different work environments such as a small farm, plantation, and a big city.
Have you ever been misused, or depressed, or separated from your whole family? In the novel Chains, all of these things happened to Isabel, who was a slave girl. Slavery was definitely a dark splotch in American history. This essay is on the book Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson. It contains information about the setting and how that influenced the characters, the storyline and plot, and the author’s influences.
“Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson portrays the life of Isabel, a young slave in the American Colonies. When her master died, she was promised freedom out of her will. However, her master’s nephew took her ownership and is sold to the Lockton family. During this period of hardship, another great conflict takes place. The American Revolution.
During the colonial era, there were three groups of people with three varying political beliefs; the Patriots, the Loyalists, and the slaves. In the novel Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, she writes about how the term “Freedom and Liberty” meant something different to each of the groups. This liberating idea drove the different parties to act a certain way throughout the book. For example, the Patriots fought courageously against Britain even though they posed no threat whatsoever to them. The Loyalists, on the other hand, conquered entire Rebel cities to drown out the Patriots’ beliefs. Lastly, the slaves would act fearlessly and do things to spite their masters regardless of their political position. All in all, these diverse classes of
Finally, Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird is another character that displays courage throughout the book. The first way that Atticus shows courage is by shooting Tim Johnson, the mad dog. Tim Johnson had rabies and was coming towards their neighborhood. Atticus, who hadn’t shot a gun in years, had been known for his shooting skills and was told that he had to shoot the dog, if he had missed he could have harmed someone, startled the dog, or put them in danger which is why this incident was so courageous of him. Secondly, Atticus took on Tom Robinson’s case which took lots of courage because he knew how the town of Maycomb would react and the tormenting him and his family would go through. Not only this but Atticus was determined to
The book I read was called Chains written by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book was about standing up for your self even if you are not the biggest person or the most powerful person in the room. I think it teaches a lot of children a lesson. You can stand up for yourself, no mater what atmosphere you are in. A lot of people struggle with feeling not important and people can say what they want, because you don't matter. The author did a really great job of teaching that lesson.
Courage is shown by doing something selfless. Andrew received a draft form the union army, and instead of going to fight the war like a man he chickened out.
Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death. However, he continued to persevere through it all, and was able to accomplish great things for his country. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, who promoted the education of girls in her country. Despite the clear threat of the Taliban, she continued to fight hard for her cause. Courage can be defined in many different ways, such as the ability to persevere and accomplish something in a frightening or risky situation. Examples of courage can be seen all around the world. Without courageous people, society would not have been able to improve. Being courageous is difficult, and requires an abundance of dedication and perseverance. It also includes remaining strong, despite the challenges that may occur along the way.
The lion is Isabel's fierce spirit inside her that wants her and her sister to be free. Lady Seymour sees a caring young girl who will fight for freedom for her sister and herself. Lady Seymour knows that Isabel is a bright and fierce girl. All Madam Lockton sees is an object that she can boss around and does not see her as a person. She gives Isabel food and tries her best to care for her even though she still treats her as a slave sometimes. Lady Seymour encourages Isabel to do what is right from the pureness of her heart. She allows Isabel to escape to freedom and to fight for herself.
When Madam said “It’s the devil” while Ruth was having seizure, it reminded me of the first time my mom had a seizure. This books reminds me of the song It’s my life by Bon Jovi because Isabel wants to be free and alone with her sister, Ruth, and not be apart of the selling of slaves. I’m like the character Isabel because we both know what it’s like to watch someone have a seizure and not know what to do and we both know what it’s like to be stuck in a position you can’t do anything in.
When attempting to analyze Isabel’s thought process in choosing this path, one could infer many possible motives from referring to the previous chapters and one’s own interpretation of them. Our heroine’s attachment to Pansy and the promise she made to return to her could be a influencing factor. Isabel has also had a longing to prove her strength in the face of suffering, and an unwillingness to admit when she has been proven wrong. Another consideration could be the effect of her associates sudden conformity. A person normally would
