The private security industry has continued to grow and has also succeeded in becoming big part of the protection needs of many across the globe. What started out as a career marred with bad jokes and stereotypes, has grown to be a necessity to many. With the growth of this industry comes new developments and obstacles that push it to hold its place that it has claimed. This essay will cover some possible challenges security personnel may face, my views on if they can disregard globalization, some likely legislative trends in the future, and if the nature of terrorism will change. This industry has a lot that it must be informed about in order to continue operating at its peak. First to be covered are the possible challenges security personnel may face. A great way to sum up some of these challenges is the label of asset protection challenges. This can be defined as “issues facing the security professional such as the changing nature of the workplace, ethical considerations, advances in technology, increased diversity, privatization of public services, terrorist activity and globalization” (Ortmeier, P, 2012, p350). In order to keep a float and to continue to make an impact, security personnel must be able to handle all of these challenges in a professional and timely manner. From training employees on how to deal with terroristic threats to making sure they are informed on different technological advancements that may jeopardize their effectiveness when it comes to what
To start off with I chose to go with our banking or financial industry. The banking industry is constantly getting attacked by various methods on a daily basis. I chose this industry because I happen to know someone who works in the security sector at Wells Fargo Bank, he was a good person to get information on what he sees on a daily or weekly basis. This paper is the opinion of myself and with gathered information from various resources.
"Private security and public law enforcement share many of the same goals: preventing crime and disorder, identifying criminals, and ensuring the security of people and property," ("Private Security and Public Law Enforcement," n.d.). There are many more private security officers than public police officers, making tandem projects and collaboration essential ("Private Security and Public Law Enforcement," n.d.). There may be some overlap between public law enforcement and private security, but generally the latter can be more highly specialized and are therefore useful in situations such as campus security.
Bellavita Christopher is the Director of Programs for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Also, from 1998 to 2002, he was the planning coordinator for the Utah Olympic Public Safety Command. The author focuses on the fact that homeland security faces a variety of threats. Many factors such as the economy, weapons of mass destruction and a lack of moral compass pose potential challenges to homeland security (Bellavita, 2009). The terrorist attacks such as the one in Mumbai, the economic meltdown, the disaster on the borders remain potential malefactors to the U. S. homeland. And to no surprise, the threats are gradually transforming into a more complex tactics. Bellavita takes aim towards a realistic assessment
There is strengths and weaknesses; threats and vulnerabilities of every organization’s security system. These issues tend to be those of the same at national and global levels; crime and criminology tend to have an impact on it.
To understand the role(s) of a Security Manager, a person must know what security is and what it means to an organization. According to Ortmeier, “security may be defined as a public or private service-related activity that provides personnel, equipment, and creates policies and procedures designed to prevent or reduce losses. These losses, caused by criminal action as well as by noncriminal events resulting from human error, emergencies, man-made and natural disasters, and business intelligence collection by competitors”. (2009).
In his statement to House Committee on Homeland Security, Transportation Security Subcommittee, Administrator Neffenger, identified a need to address vulnerabilities that were uncovered during findings from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), some of the findings included lack of training proficiency on critical equipment (Neffenger, 2015). Using risk management the TSA identified a vulnerability in their daily operations by uncovering the lack of training and led them assign a risk priority for it based on the consequence (weapons being smuggled onto aircraft) and the threat of it being used by an adversary. Training is critical resource in risk management. When a risk is identified it is important to decide if funded training will help mitigate the risk to a negligible level. There is no point to having the most cutting edge technology in support of homeland security if the qualified personnel are not in place to use them. If an agency has been allocated the newest 2017 model piece of equipment and it has been deemed essential to mitigate new threats. How important is that piece of equipment if all the staff members are only certified and proficient on the 2015 model? With both resources being allocated and qualified personnel in place a new threat has emerged in the information age.
“Security programs are aimed at creating an appreciation and understanding of the Security Department’s objectives as they relate to the specific industry they serve” (Sennewald, 2013). Businesses come in all different sizes, some big some small. Businesses need a plan to ensure assets, personnel, and facilities are protected and this plan must be actively in place. Security programs provide businesses with the framework needed to keep a business or company at the security level needed to operate. This can be done in numerous ways. Assessing the risks involved, lessening the gravity of those risks, and keeping the security program and the security practices updated are just to name a few. In this core assessment paper, I will identify an actual organizational security program, conduct
The private sector plays a major role and has very serious responsibilities within the Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE), since it owns the vast majority of the national critical infrastructures and key resources (CIKR) (Business Executives for National Security, 2007). Moreover, the private sector is able to provide expertise and resources that are necessary to sustain some of the core capabilities, which will help the nation to accomplish the National Preparedness Goal (Department of Homeland Security, 2015). Therefore, the private sector plays a key role in prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery (DHS, 2015).
Safety and security is important and a high priority for anyone. As a result of several events, such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the now infamous Christmas day “Underwear Bomber” transportation security has been revamped and reinvented to protect innocent people from religious/political extremists and crazies alike. In some cases, measures of heightened security have been praised such as the hiring of more security guards or the addition of more metal detectors to airport security in particular. In other cases, controversy and outrage have erupted worldwide like in the case
Security plays a vital role in everyday life. Recently security measures have been put to the test like never before on a day-to-day basis. Within the last ten years a major new problem has occurred in the world of security, mass shootings. Something that really has not always been a security threat has now become one of the biggest threats in the world of security. Within the last ten years mass shootings have occurred in all different locations around the country and some even outside the country. They have occurred in all different locations ranging from movies theaters, malls, concerts, nightclubs and the biggest of them all schools. The now role of security has changed from the way they train, do drills and respond to certain situations
Security officers learned a very large lesson on September 11, 2001; they learned that they needed to care about and perform their job to the best of their ability in order to safeguard our country.
Private security is an increasingly growing industry with an increasing demand in recent years. It has reached the point where private security officers outnumber police officers in the United States, according to an article in The Washington Post. Similar trends are occurring in other countries as well. Yet many websites including CNN claim that security guards are untrained and incompetent. How is this supposed to make people feel safer? Thankfully, these claims are largely untrue and exist only to stir up rumours which sell newspapers. Here are the ways unarmed security officers are keeping people safe and preventing crime every day, in ways that you probably don’t realize:
In order to fully understand all concepts and strategies in starting a private security service, our paper will touch on some of the basic points to
With security there are many different kinds of tasks that are involved depending on where you work. Report writing is a must in the security field this is where daily activities or any problems are written down; things like fires, property damage, theft, explosions, or even espionage. To either monitor the CCTV or go on foot patrols, integrating with the people inside the facility while checking for anything out of the ordinary; like fires, bombs, or floods. To monitor anyone entering or exiting the property and guarding against any theft while maintaining a level of security that meets the client’s expectations. To know when to call the police, fire or rescue if an emergency arises. (O*NET n.d.)
Security has been a common topic of controversy since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and even before then it was a constant subject. The image of buildings collapsing and billowing smoke has been engraved into the minds of Americans and will remain there for years to come. Security is an issue that we encounter everyday. Whether it is driving down the freeway or walking into the grocery store; we are cautious of what is going on around us. Men and women across this country are dedicated to enforcing laws; laws that are designed to ensure the security of our communities and our nation.
