“Can being in prison actually change you for the better” Shawshank Redemption is a classic film of a man named “Andy Dufresne” who gets sentenced for 18 years in “Shawshank Penitentiary” for the double murder of his wife and her fellow lover. But this didn't happen, he was accused of committing this crime when he was an innocent man. More and more evidence stacked up against him, he pleaded to be let go, but as a result he had to suffer for most of his life. He goes through a lot in Shawshank Penitentiary, he meets new friends and gets to know different people and personalities. But there are very bad phazes and Andy’s life, he gets abused by a group called the “sisters” they rape and beat him up, this goes on for a while. This later stops when “Boggs” the main gang leader for the sisters gets put in a wheelchair after beating Andy up. …show more content…
But he eventually makes a plan to escape the prison, he hasn't changed much throughout his time at prison. He’s personality and how he acts doesn’t change from when he arrived and when he left, for other prisoners they change a lot because of the things they go through and experience. “Get busy livin’ or get busy dying” this is showing that he is determined to escape shawshank and to not change his personality for the worse. Which can be connected with Shawshank and most of my texts, which is “if prison can change people” It takes Andy years and years to escape Shawshank, keeping to himself, not looking around for trouble and searching for danger, allows him to plan and execute an escape route from Shawshank prison to
In this film the character Andy Dufresne goes into prison and gets broken down and has his ambitions brutally beaten out of him, but when he hits rock bottom he finally starts to regain his resilience and his hope. This idea of hope and resilience was showed throughout the film and it shows us that being resilient and holding onto your hope is a vital part of day to day prison life. An example of hope and resilience being showed in the film is when Andy asks Red for a stone hammer, Red tells him that it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel a hole through those walls, but when Andy tries to carve his name into the wall he realises that the walls are made of a weak stone. When Andy escapes from Shawshank,
In the novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the reader follows the life of Andy Dufresne, who was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and a golf pro. Author Stephen King, who is known for his simpler, conversation esque writing, describes Andy’s experiences and attempt to escape from Shawshank Prison where he is being held. Red, Andy’s most valuable friend while in prison, is also in prison for killing his wife, but in contrast to Andy, he actually did it. Andy is constantly denied his freedom for parole or when evidence arises proving his innocence because of his role running the illegal money laundering scheme for Warden Norton. Throughout the novella, both characters display moments of similar, but also at times vastly different, levels of hope. King uses the way characters, such as Red and Andy, view hope as either a means of escape or simply futile in the novella to show how the circumstances surrounding a tragedy or difficult situation change a character’s mindset on hope and in turn dictates the actions they use to cope.
Stephen King’s novella and movie “Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption” accompanies an immaculate middle-aged man and his journey to live life to the fullest –with his calm nature and lucrative knowledge he attempts to become an adrenaline seeker while also trying to escape from the harsh reality. This was Andy’s way of releasing pressure just like how a pressure cooker as stated in the book needs to relieve itself before it explodes. His hardships in life have created so much tension that Andy would go to such drastic lengths in finding a way to escape his mundane, nine to five job as a banker. In addition, the stress that Andy built up would most likely be from his journey towards the position of vice-president and all the responsibilities that come with it. The breaking point was when he discovered that his wife Linda was having an affair with Glenn Quentin, a pro golf player, sending him to find a way to be liberated from this tragedy. After being found guilty by the court, Andy will be sent to the Shawshank prison where his true talents will emerge. Although the prison allows many things to pass under their nose, the incessant berating and threat the guards pose on the prisoners will eventually wear them out like how rocks turn into sand due to erosion; moreover, rocks were formed due to pressure from the Earth creating layers of dirt on top of each other until the bits and pieces of Earth form hard rock. Andy is the only one who can supply this change, throughout
In Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King and its movie adaptation , The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne and Red face many challenges within themselves. These two men have been incarcerated for almost half of their lives. They’ve become so adjusted to prison life that they question whether or not they would know how to survive without. Andy’s escape showed readers and watchers that his crave and hope for freedom is much stronger than Red’s. There are many similarities as well as differences between the book and film. Both the book and film are based upon hope and freedom.
He is apparently innocent, and there are all sorts of details involving his case, but after a while they take on a kind of unreality; all that counts inside prison is its own society -- who is strong, who is not -- and the measured passage of time because his innocence was ignored by the Warden. The irony is that in prison that he learnt how to lie and because of the circumstances he was forced to do illegal money laundering. Andy does special fiscal favours for the warden. ("You know, the funny thing is, on the outside I was an honest man, straight as an arrow," he says about this. "I had to come to prison to be a crook.") The film shows how much Andy has changed yet preserved his own passions, values and humanity and made an impact in his fellow inmates lives. Despite being locked in prison everyday, he still has passion for life. He also had faith stronger than anyone in this prison as he was strong and never complained despite the numerous tortures he went
Andy Dufresne is knowing he is innocent of his crime and is determined to be free and live his dreams. At Shawshank State Prison, it may seem like the inmates are controlled and unable to do anything. However, Andy and the other inmates took every opportunity to make themselves feel freer. Although Andy is convicted sentenced to life in prison his self-determinism for extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are clear throughout the film. The experiences that Shawshank brings does not hinder the self-determinism that he shows. It’s always a possibility that someone could escape a prison yet no one thinks it can happen. The maximum-security prison in the film The Shawshank Redemption is no joke however through determination Andy Dufresne can accomplish it. Upon arrival to the prison Andy had to adapt to direction that his life was heading. Even though he knows of his innocence he is incapable of just walking out and has to deal with the nuisances in his way. The characters feel like freedom is something that they always look forward to, but near the end when Brooks and Red are paroled they soon realize the changes around them and can’t adapt. Nevertheless, Frank Darabont does an exceptional job of showing the emotions that the charters had to go through in this prison escape film. It seems as though the point he is trying to get
The Shawshank Redemption described prisoners’ life in the prison which named Shawshank. What deeply impressed me was the impact of institutionalization.
Directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption tells the Story of Andy Dufrane, a man who has been wrongly convicted of murder and must endure life inside the harsh and corrupt Shawshank prison, but despite this he never loses hope of finding freedom. Hope is an important inspiring idea in this film, as it is what sustains him during the long and difficult years within the prison, and it is the result of this enduring hope that Andy finally finds freedom. There are many visual and oral techniques used throughout the film to portray the idea of hope. This includes the hope that Andy holds, and
The Shawshank Redemption movie is about a man named Andy Dufresne who was falsely accused of murder and was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover. Being in jail, Andy faced many problems of being abused, but he also gained a strong friendship with a man named Red. Many of the things that the prisoners had to face showed a sociological perspective on how life was in jail and how it affected the prisoners. In Shawshank prison, the functionalism theory, the conflict perspective, and the control theory shows the life and adjustments a prisoner has to make in order to survive going into a new world.
You can be imprisoned physically, but mentally you’re free. Andy was in prison and his freedom was taken away from him, but he didn’t let that imprison his mind and thoughts. It’s like when Andy was walking in the yard as if he was walking in a party, as Norton told him. Andy was always “wearing” his freedom. He never built up a jail mindset and his eyes never got that dull look in them. A symbol is something which has a meaning beyond itself. In The Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King brought up freedom in several different ways. Freedom is symbolized in the book pin-ups, rock sculptures, and Jake.
Shawshank Redemption is directed by Frank Darabot, published in 1995 Australia. The film focusses on the theme of forgiveness and escape. It follows an unusual friendship between Andy and Red set in a 1930’s American prison. The main focal scenes explored include: Brooks suicide and Tommy’s death. The film is to be narrated by Morgen Freeman (Red), it shows the 20 year period of Andy’s imprisonment. As a part of the analysis emphases on the scenes as it introduces the audience to the Shawshank prison and Andy’s first moments when attends to the prison to the very moment when he escapes to Mexico.
The movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is based on a character Andy Dufresne. Andy is a young and successful banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for murdering his wife and her secret lover. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20-years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit, determination, courage, and desire.
Holding onto one’s humanity is a skill that takes constant practice and the conscious decision to do so. The protagonist of the film, Andy, is very different from the rest on his inmates at Shawshank in that he manages to hold onto his humanity throughout his time in prison despite many trying situations. This trait is first expressed when Andy asks if anyone knows the name of man who was beaten to death by the guards on his first night in prison. By simply having some human emotion Andy has proven that he is not willing to let prison change who he is as a human being. Again, Andy leaps out of his comfort zone during his confrontation with the guard on the roof. Perched on the edge of the roof, Andy spreads his wings and risks the fall in order to grant his inmates a taste of the outside world through the simple luxury of a few beers for his friends to enjoy. The great beauty of a man who not only has the courage to hold onto his own humanity but also has the boldness to help others do the same is what makes Andy such a captivating protagonist. His courage and determination are the only thing keeping him human and moreso, keeping him sane.
A man by the name of Andy Dufresne was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Shawshank prison. He was an obvious black sheep among the prisoners, but as time went on he grew relationships with the crooks and realized the injustice in the justice system. In the creation of friendship between Red and Andy, hope was spread throughout the prison. While many themes are present in the film The Shawshank Redemption, hope, friendship, and injustice are also relevant in the world today.
Moreover another production aspect used to show us this idea is music. Music is used to create mood and help us understand what a character is going through. We hear violin and string instruments as Andy arrives to Shawshank Prison. Violin and string instruments are used in movies a lot to make the viewer feel sad about something happening or about to happen. We first hear Orchestral Music when we are shown Shawshank Prison we hear it playing in the background low volume and slow tempo and this increases in volume and tempo to create a sad mood for Andy’s arrival and emphasise that the prison is a dark and depressing place to end up. It suggests to the viewer that the prison is a sad place to end up in and that it is a corrupted place too. It makes us worried for Andy who seems like a good guy.
