As stated in No-one Expects Me Anywhere, Pamela Gibson states, “…above all we need to rethink our attitudes of aging… our negative images of old age are constantly reinforced through film, television, and newspapers, where representation often resembles caricature (Gibson, 87).” By only accepting and representing one small portion of society, the media is setting up consequences for the rest of society who do not fall under the accepted standards. As a whole, Vogue represents women in a way that takes away from their identity. Fashion magazines like Vogue are supposed to show fashions and cosmetics that can give women a sense of expression and a way for them to truly identify for themselves. More often than not only a woman’s body is displayed, taking away from her ability to be a human being just like everyone else. Fashion and advertising has a way of taking away from a woman’s identity rather than helping her find it. Vogue features some diversity but is still lacking cultures that make up so much of the world’s population. This magazine hardly features anyone that does not fit into the small box of the white European culture. If other cultures are represented they are not the focal point or the language that surrounds the image contradicts all meaning. The language displayed in this magazine plays just as much as an influential role as the images do.
This issue of Vogue reiterated the idea of gender and identity as a performance. All of the models are posing and acting
Putting distance between oneself and aging thus alleviates the fear of dying (Encyclopedia of Aging, 2002). In some countries previously named a lot of the elder are held on a pedestal. The see old age as a good thing and they look to their elders for wisdom. American culture though, seems to have lost this perspective. Ageism has become ingrained in American culture as it is passed on to children from parents who hold ageist stereotypes. The same ageist myths and misconceptions that are held by adults are also held by teens and children. Americans make jokes and comments about growing old that perpetuate negative stereotypes about aging and older persons. The lexicon is replete with ageist terms that portray older people in a negative light, such as “old fogey,” “old fart,” “geezer,” and “old goat” (Encyclopedia of Aging, 2002). Greeting-card and novelty companies call them “Over the Hill” products: the 50th Birthday Coffin Gift Boxes featuring prune juice and anti-aging soap; the “Old Coot” and “Old Biddy” bobble head dolls; the birthday cards mocking the mobility, intellect and sex drive of the no-longer-young. Many Americans chuckle at such humor. Others see it as offensive, as one more sign of pervasive ageism in America (Associated Press, 2004).
The modeling industry has created a culture of exclusion across genders and races. Author Ashley Mears (2010) critically analyses the fashion industry, and how it influences production of culture and beauty ideals around the world. The modeling world is extremely female dominated, and the women who participate are continually commodified as they are used as a means to “promote and disseminate ideas of how women should look,” (p. 23). Because consumption is valued so in today’s society, the model is employed based on her perceived ability to sell a product. The clothes she is hired to wear and the beauty ideal that she is helping sell are more important than her humanity, and she becomes dehumanized. “Clothes take on such utmost importance that models are and should be mere clothes hangers, with perfectly discrete bodies that will display the clothes but not detract from them,” (Mears, 2010, p. 35). Models are blatantly objectified as they are forced be invisible for the sake of
The article dated 09.06.2016 by, Greater Good Science Center was an interesting article that talks about aging and how some people have negative attitudes towards the concept of getting older. There are many people that fear getting older because they feel that old age will make them less popular and looked upon as an old person. They feel that young people will toss them aside and forget about them. Some even feel that their own families will push them away and will not have time to spend with them because their hearing gets bad or their walking gets slower and many other reason but they feel that there is a lack of respect for older people these days as well. Many people do not respect nor treat
People may have different reactions to how the media portrays older adults however it’s apparent that many times these stereotypes are not all fun and games and can actually be detrimental for the ageing population. Society may not realize that by continuing to generalize and stereotype older adults in the media it’s creating larger issues. A major issue I notice is that the media is also a form of education and for those who did not already have preconceived ideas about the ageing population; the media can then sway them to view older adults as such.
To begin with, ageism refers to discriminating and being prejudice of senior citizens (p.1), according to assisted living federation of America (2013). Therefore, Anderson (2013) stated, “some younger people perceive anyone with wrinkled skin or gray hair as old” (pg.1) thus, the issues of ageist stereotypes are associated with the process of aging. Consequently, while discussing with family and friends about the mounting baby boomer populace, there are various respectable and dire descriptions of aging and the elderly. An unpleasant reflection of aging would be calling them old, fragile, socially isolated, and supplementary forgetful. On the other hand, the fine descriptions of older adults would be being more conversant, becoming of additional
Regardless of the content or the person it focuses on, these types of stories in the media can help debunk the negative views an individual may have of becoming older, making the media a key player in defining societies views on ageing. Developing a positive outlook on aging can be a key factor to one’s own health and success as they become older. In today’s world, the perception of aging seems as if it is slowly changing for the better, especially when one considers the supporters of the 74 year old presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and how he has managed to appeal to a large majority of young voters despite the fact he would be the oldest president ever inaugurated. If one can establish a positive outlook on aging, which the media plays a key role in influencing along with practice healthy habits and keep their mind mentally active, they too could increase their chances of living a longer life and enjoying the years to come when they hit
With many Baby boomers now entering their senior years, there seems to be a lot more attention on the elderly. In western society, the elderly are seen as less valuable than their younger counterparts. This assumption has led to many misconceptions; A common misconception that has been very prominent is that the elderly are stuck in their ways and cannot change. This particular misconception ties into the very first chapter that we learnt about in class. When it comes to evaluating personality theories, we must first think about the philosophical assumptions that have risen. Philosophical assumptions allow for people to make certain assumptions about how those around them operate and also how they, themselves came to be. If we know
I do think as a society we judge older adults. I think everyone does this. Even though they do not dwell on the thought. I think everyone first initial thought is the on their personality or abilities of older adults. I think this is a natural thought that comes to mind of young adults. People act differently towards older adults than they do younger ones. People judge older adults on how they look and form a judgment on their capabilities and the type of person they are. But older adults can surprise you. That is why it is important not to judge a book by its cover. Young adults stereotype older adult;s with slow cognitive functioning. perceived identity is reinforced.” (329). To understand how a woman is viewed socially, this paper analyzes representations of the female figure on the covers of magazines, specifically. Magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Elle and Marie Claire, were analyzed as a whole in the quest to understand how this phenomenon, composed by several genres, organizes and spreads the hegemonic female representation. First, it will be argued that magazines shape identity by selling the image of the perfect
Hello, Marianna. I enjoyed reading your post. Stereotyping the elderly people should be avoided in their care. What hurt me the most is when I hear staff stereotyping the older adults. Sometimes, this can impact the way they provide care. We should serve as a good role model and give the best quality care that they deserve. I agree elderly patients should be fully informed of their risk of any intervention and procedure. They are a higher risk of post-op complications due to their age. A detailed preoperative assessment is vital to identify their risks and to plan interventions that could minimize post-op complications. Health care providers should We should always remember to treat the elderly population with dignity and respect. Great Post.
Some visual patterns are seen through the models on the covers. It is clear that there are predominately more white women featured on the cover than those of different ethnicities. Also, the models are all dressed in revealing clothes with a lot of cleavage showing. This shows how women are expected to look sexy and dressed for visual appeal from men, instead of for confidence or comfort for themselves. The women all portray society’s idea of a “perfect body” with just the right ratio of curves
<Vogue> one of the leading fashion magazines cross the world, publishing and founded by Conde Nast Company at 1892 in U.S, it was the first magazine used colored photograph to express the fashion works. Magazine itself was compressive and well respected by readers, it does covering all aspects of makeup, beauty, health, entertainment and the art, as the “Fashion Bible” It was been published in total 21 countries and regions globalized. <Vogue> seems like a fruit of pop and art, rather than a fashion records. Through these multiple interpretations of ideal femininity, different cultures portray the ideal woman in different ways. Vogue is just one of the many examples, illustrating the idea of femininity and how societal structures enforce women to look and act in a certain way in order to be accepted in society; however, I believe women should be accepted as their natural self, reinforcing the concept that culture should be freely expressed.
I feel like its speaking on the meaning to your life, providing both structure and a reason for your day-to-day existence. Basically stating principles. Once you get your priorities straight, it sets you on a one-way track, you can't just stop caring about the right things. Where for our culture's perception on aging they want to stay young and never grow old. Its such a big thing to people on aging where they do all these things to stay and appear young. But their so wrapped up on aging and not living in the moment. Where you miss all the little things that's going on around you. Where a lot of people don't realize that until they hit that age. So instead, you should embrace your age and live your life to the fullest. Then caring so much on
Feminism and popular culture have interacted over the years, each influencing and responding to the other. The media has been a cause of feminist protests, especially because of their representations of men and women’s lives. These portrayals can have an impact on society, as because of their mass distribution, they have the capability to influence the public’s perspective on gender relations and feminist issues. The views of feminism and the ideas that the movement was currently emphasizing can be seen in popular culture’s productions during that time. One critical feminist issue has been the expectations for their physical appearances and lives outside of the home. In fact, Naomi Wolf’s idea of these themes, as described in The Beauty
