Changing the oil for a vehicle’s engine can be as painless as changing pants. In most cas-es, changing oil and maintaining a vehicle can be quite relaxing. Changing one’s oil is a very im-portant task. Without motor oil a normal vehicle would only be able to drive for about five minutes until experiencing major engine damage. Changing an engine’s oil normally will also pro-long a vehicle’s life due to the lubrication and heat distributing qualities of fresh motor oil. The process of changing one’s motor oil will be broken down into three simple steps. Step one to changing motor oil is to gather tools and jack up the vehicle. The optimal tools for jacking up a vehicle include jacks, jack stands and wooden blocks; these tools can easily be found at any auto parts store within 10 miles of most residencies. Alternatively, a jack can of-ten be found in the trunk of most cars as standard equipment and cinder blocks are very easily accessible. A ratchet and socket set, gloves, and an oil pan are required. Begin by sliding the oil pan under the vehicle, then, use your ratchet and socket to unbolt the oil drain bolt from the bottom of the oil pan. This bolt will be easy to find since it appears front and center in the middle of the oil pan. After unbolting the oil drain plug, oil will pour nicely into the catch pan, be extremely cautious not to touch motor oil on bare skin because it contains cancerous materials. The oil may also be very hot if the engine had recently been running. Handling the oil with care will minimize risks of burns. When all of the oil has been poured into the catch pan, be sure to take the old engine oil to any nearby auto parts store where they will safety dispose of the oil.
