First of all, kids will be more energized and be more academically advanced if school starts are pushed back. If school times are later, that means that these activities would continue later on in the day. Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Unfortunately, teens are unable to obtain the correct number of hours per night. School start times should be later because school times should revolve around the student’s best ability to learn. When America started public schools, they had the same time frame, around seven to three. They did this so the farmers would have time to go and work in the afternoon. Well, needless to say we still have the same schedule now, with a much different industry and way of life. There are countless reasons schools should start later and countless studies that prove school should start later. I think some of the more important reasons include, a teen’s biological clock that makes their brain want to go to bed and get up late, car crashes caused by sleep deprivation and more sleep increasing concentration, alertness and a better attitude in class

Schools should start later because students need more time to rest in the morning. Some reasons also show that it will mess up schedules. Since the young adults have a tendency for not being able to sleep until later, on average, the young adults only get about 7 to 7 ½ hours of sleep, when in reality they need 9 to 9 ½ hours of sleep. Have you ever had to go to sleep early because you had something important the next day and you needed a good night's sleep? Schools are starting later and later as researchers are saying that kids perform better when they get more sleep. There a a lot of reasons to support this, one is that it has been proven that kids do better on tests and quizzes following a good night’s sleep. School starting later could help with child obesity. It has been proven that when school starts later that there is improved attendance, graduation rates, and reduced car crash rates. School starting later would benefit the teachers and staff as well. The graduation rate alone is one very good reason for school to start later. School should start at at least 9:00.

Many parents rely on their older children in high school to pick up their little kids from school. This becomes a problem when high school students get out later than middle and elementary school students because the pickup arrangement is altered. This affects the younger students bus times as well because the buses are used for elementary and middle school as well as high school. If this happens, it can change the schedules of a big amount of students tremendously. In my opinion school, starting early will continue to be a serious problem unless we switch school hours with the elementary schools. Middle school students are falling asleep in class and not doing well on tests. Elementary students already have too much energy and are becoming reckless. If we put this plan into action, elementary students will be calmer in less wild in class, which will satisfy the teachers. The middle schoolers will be more alert in class and will represent Sioux City in a new light. Starting school too early or too late is affecting the children in the school district; we should swap school hours with the elementary
