Changing Values in Indian Culture

In this paper I will be identifying beliefs and values common to my family of origin. I will be using Purnell's Model of cultural competency and will explain the major assumptions of the model in relevance to my culture. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a quick overview of the Asian Indian culture. One must be aware of their own culture and the culture of others in order to offer competent and culturally sensitive care and understand how their cultural beliefs may affect their health. (Leuning, Swiggum, Wiegert, and McCullough-Zander, 2002).

“The extension of women’s rights is the beginning of all social progress.” -Charles Fourier Initially. Women have always been seen as the fragile sex, the one that has to be protected and kept safe. Still, not everybody thinks like that. There are several places around the world where women are seen as the weaker sex or even a burden. In order for women to be valued more we have to address the issues behind the cause, and we need to find a solution immediately. We need to achieve social progress by fighting all the types of oppression against women and by creating a better future for them. Finally, globalization has given way to human development through culture integration, information sharing, and competition between countries. As people disperse from their native countries they take with them their culture and ideologies. At the same time technology is rapidly advancing, allowing information to be instantaneously shared across the globe. These events culminate in the diversification of society. As opposed to living with one view of the world people can now choose from any number of beliefs or views and find others that share them.

Women wanted to improve education in both university courses and at a school level. They wanted to open up career opportunities for girls that were once just meant for men, some examples of these were in sport and science. While this was happening other women were focussing on meeting women’s specific safety and health needs, this included greater access to contraception, abortion, and protection from domestic violence.

Women has always voiced their opinion and will continue influencing the world. Women play such a big part of society and today women are becoming stronger, and more wiser than ever before. Once women won their vote, they began to teach and showcase independence and empowerment through society and create examples that every little girl should follow. Women have accomplished many goals throughout history such as increasing and improving social, and economic view of women. Because of the strength and power women display, women are receiving more respect and realizing the sense of self-worth.

Throughout history, women have been viewed differently from men. In the 1880’s and before, women were in charge of making a happy home, her job above all was to make sure her husband was happy. Around, the 1910’s women began fighting for their right to vote and to be viewed as an equal to the janitor that works for them. Still, to this day, women and girls are fighting to be viewed as an equal and respected as men and boys are in our society.

The earlier historical settings gave an opportunity to the Europeans to visit the primitive cultures of the world. As time progress the settling of the Europeans in different areas provided an accumulated firsthand knowledge which defined the means for existence for human beings. By looking around us we can observe the later stages on cultures that are as a result of the process that was initiated at the late age of colonization and exploration. The culture of the people has spontaneously been affected by this occurring changes thus causing cultural readjustment that has significantly contributed to transformation and new ways of social interaction. When cultures interact, then there has to be cultural exchanges that are experienced.

Woman can finally go without judgement and fight for what they believe in, wear what they want, and speak their mind and be taken serious in their jobs and conversations. Woman of color can wear their hair naturally, embrace their culture, and walk confidently without fear of being sexually assaulted. There is still prejudice in nonprogressive places in the world, women are treated as second class citizens, they have to fight against the patriarchy in both their jobs and when they are victims of assault. Over the course of history, gender inequalities have been a prevalent issue amongst countries around the world. The notion, women are inferior to men has shaped their treatment in all aspects of life. Women were subjected to a patriarchal role in society, the men worked and women took care of domestics to some degree greater or lesser depending the country they resided in. In the late 19th and early 20th century women started rising up against male dominated societies in feminist movements. These movements were campaigns and reform plans to combat issues of equal pay, sexual violence, and denial of suffrage, reproductive rights, equal job opportunities and property rights. Thus observing women in Great Britain and Saudi Arabia today one can see how the role women play in society has dramatically changed from 1800s till now.

Since the beginning of time women have been the most underestimated power house of the world. Seeing life would cease to exist if it were not for women. Now years and many influential women later the United States is finally seeing the light and a women is closer than ever before to winning presidency. Being this close alone opens up many opportunities for girls old and young! To think what this means for the younger generation. As little girls were once afraid to race that boy on the playground or hesitant to join in on that football game. Society is breaking theses gender roles one remarkable milestone at a time. Time changes everything. As time goes on even the everyday things in our life change. There are the obvious things like technology, transportation, and cooking. However, unmaterialistic things in our life change as well. Such as the way people date and the way people view dating. It really has changed drastically from generation to generation. For example, someone using 2000’s dating techniques would have had serious trouble dating in the 1950’s. Women's rights and responsibilities have changed a lot between the 19th and 21st centuries. Starting from the 19th century, women have progressed in almost every year. Women can now work, get an education, own property, and vote. Women also have more responsibilities in the household than they use to. With these changes, women are now almost equals to men. India is country known all over the world for its culture and tradition. It is a land with various cultures and traditions which are as vast as the subcontinent upon which they are located. This essay will focus on the Indian culture and highlight the different beliefs that Indians have on life processes. The essay will show the different methods Indians use to stay healthy and how the Indian culture can determine how healthcare services are provided to the people.

It is said that technology is turning our world into a global village, and this is true to some extent but even now if we move from one city to another, one can feel the difference in language, culture, life style and many more.
