Chapter 6 The Importance of gaining momentum At this time I would like for you to use your imagination. I want you to picture yourself as an 18-wheeler cruising down the highway. Keep in mind that most 18-wheelers have at least 8 to 16 gears and these trucks range from 20,000 to 80,000 pounds. Now the majority of these trucks top speed is around 75 to 85 miles per hour in their highest gear. The question at this time should be: How does a truck that weighs 80,000 lbs even get up to the speed of 85 mph? I will answer that question for you right now: Momentum is how that is done. This truck will start at its lowest gear and as the driver flows through the gear pattern the speed increases and that’s how the momentum is gained. Think about …show more content…
Better yet, think about that millionaire out there who was born into poverty. They were born on the benefits of the government such as Welfare, Food Stamps and Medicaid programs. Now they drive $100,000 dollar cars and live in million dollar homes. They all went through rough times and had to travel over obstacles that came upon them through their lives. We must realize the importance of gaining momentum. Every time that we get passed another obstacle we gain momentum. That is how you get stronger, faster and wiser in the game of life. Whenever you pass a test, or accomplish something, or reach one of your goals in life you are gaining momentum. Please understand that by gaining momentum your tenacity grows. Your will-power gets stronger and you began to believe that you cannot be stopped. You will start to see the power within you grow. The power within you that was never acknowledged simply because you never knew you had it. You will begin to develop this amazing level of self-confidence and belief in yourself. That is unexplainable! Not to mention, that by believing in yourself and raising your level of self confidence, obstacles will be easier to overcome. Understanding these analogies and philosophies are going to be what you need to learn how to gain momentum from
The rider needs to tell the driver how fast they want to go. Typical wakesurf speed is around 8-11mph depending on several variables.
When wealthy people look at the world around them and where they are at in their financial situations they often feel a sense of power and feel in control of their future and lives. Unlike the wealthy when the poor look their financial situation they are overcome with feelings of defeat and uncertainty about the future. Which is a feeling that many like Madonna Harris, Jenifer Hernandez, and Martha Johnson experienced. These women and their families experienced the bottom of the social class which is the underclass that consists of individuals with next to no chance of ever leaving this class. Those who belong to this class have little or no connection with the job market but those who are lucky enough to get a job are only offered low paying or temporary work. Government funded programs like SNAP, Welfare and WIC are designed to help those in need but people who apply for them are often turned away because of the specific criteria that must be met which. If they are accepted they are or are not supplemented enough to maintain an apartment, afford food, and utilities as well as everyday living
Consequently, society has prevented the poor from achieving their goal of reaching to the top. This is because our society needs the less fortunate to do the hard labor that most Americans would not dream of doing. Take the example of Barbara Ehrenreich. She as journalist didn't agree on the idea that their low paid jobs account for their perseverance and abilities. She decided to explore the wonders of low paid jobs and quickly realized that these kinds of jobs were less paying and more demanding of work. With that being, the money she earned was enough for only her basic needs and bills. In these conditions, it’s almost impossible to be able to prosper. This is
Since poverty can span multiple generations its important how socioeconomics keeps the disadvantaged from achieving success. Poverty and the distribution of wealth are class issues, admittedly complicated by race and gender, we are born into a particular social class, and most of us will die in the same one into which we are born. While some will rise above our class origins, many more equally conscientious willing and able will remain in poverty. Although there are some cases that maybe used to counter the effects of socioeconomics on success, overachieving through hard work may still be halted and misunderstood. When people ask me how I managed to move out of poverty, I always get a lump in my throat. It is not because I am embarrassed to tell of my journey or because I want to forget that part of my past. Instead, I fear that people will think that I just decide to pull myself up by my boat
Poverty has always been with us from beggars outside the gates of Jerusalem to the mentally ill homeless woman in the park. America is known for our huge difference in culture and class. This is due partly to the dynamics behind the political decisions of this country. The president himself admits that America is more unequal than it’s been since the great depression and many of his own supporters say he has failed. America now has, by many standards, the lowest social mobility of all of the high-end countries, meaning that a child born into poverty is likely to grow up as a poor adult. This is surprising for a country that not only prides itself as being a middle class society, but as the society where anyone can make it and where
According to the presidential address by President Obama, the founders of the great nation rejoiced on the fact that America will be a country where hard work will be paid off and where responsibility will be rewarded. America will be a country where anyone can make it if they tried no matter what background; however, this address is countered by the idea that the vicious circle of income inequality is growing. This means that the proportion of the citizens that never actually make it up to the wealthy ladder and have to remain in rags will continue to grow.
It can always be nice to imagine that you can go from very poor to very rich but in America, that’s not the case. According to a recent study, 70% of those born in low income families remained in the lower income bracket. Out of the remaining 30%, only 24% reached middle-class or upper- class and 4% rose to become high income earners (Hargreaves). Now, it is very difficult for people born into the lower class to rise up to the middle or upper class. These people that do successfully rise up have to have certain characteristics. 53% were college graduates, 50% were two income families, 35% were white, and 34% did not experience unemployment (Hargreaves). Most people in low- income families cannot afford college and student loans. This makes them less likely to become part of the middle class. Poor people do not have the resources to strive and become part of the other social classes. Overall, it is becoming more and more difficult for low- income families to become part of the middle class.
Research shows that low income people fighting to move up in society are only trapped in the lower class due to the limitations given from state and federal aid programs. Most of the lower class would like to believe that they will get ahead, but the sad truth is most will stay trapped in the lower class. This is affecting not only the adults, but children as well. “More than one out in [of] eight” (VartaAnian, Houser and Harkness) people in the U.S. are receiving help from some of these types of federal aid program. There are a number of diverse and complex factors that contribute to these issues for the low income people in America. This is not something that has just recently became an issue, it has been around for many of years and also
Many reforms in the UnitedStates have been passed to help fight against the “War on Poverty”; but it has not been effective in eradicating poverty in the U.S. There are about 46 million people who are living in impoverished conditions and poverty continues to be a social issue in this country (Heritage Foundation, 2011) In the beginning, our country was formed under the belief that “this land is the land of opportunity and if we worked hard enough the American Dream can be gained” (Schwarz, 1997). People immigrate to this country today in hopes of becoming rich so they could gain a better life. In spite of coming to this country for a better life, many are faced with the lack of skills and money to succeed. In the end, most will end
To be a greater push yourself beyond what you have already mastered. If you don't go beyond you will not get better. It's important for mind and body to push the limits, physical and mental strength are important for a healthy life. You are making yourself stronger by pushing yourself.
Ronald Reagan once said, “We fought a war on poverty, and poverty won.” I read the book, Dancing in the dark by Morris Dickstein. This book was about the great depression, and the impacts it had on American life. The traditional thought of poverty, people dying of hunger and people lying in the roads, has been erased. America has abolished poverty by the traditional standards but the thought of poverty and what it is has changed. In America we consider poverty to be spending all your money on bills, so you have no money left for food to feed your family. We consider poverty to be just being poor. One-Third of our population makes less than $38,000. This is not enough to be able to be above the poverty line. Anything below this
Even though having the “poor class” is a necessary evil needed for society to function, most Americans, at some point in time, will experience what it is like to live in poverty or live below the poverty line. One main reason for having a high percentage of people living in poverty is because the U.S. policy makers have ignored the poor and have given tax breaks to those with a much higher income. Funding for welfare was slashed and extended unemployment benefits were ended. With little success with the economic reform the United States has been going through for the past five years, about 14.5 percent of Americans are still living under the poverty line.
Although, momentum doesn't at all times go your direction. Here and there, your group can lose momentum in the wake of encountering a difficulty. At the point when this happens, it can be hard to recapture your momentum. At the point when your group loses momentum, players can begin to feel doubtful, think adversely, and harp on the past missteps. This makes it much harder for the group to recapture that momentum.
However, if we choose to give up on ourselves in the middle of the journey just because we have low self-esteem and do not believe that others can support us, we can never be successful. Hence, only the person who endures throughout the journey and believes strongly in hope is qualified enough to be successful.
Being self-confident, believe in one’s self is very important. Millions of people fail to live their life they always wished to live. They fail to realise their ambitions and give up on their dreams as soon as they encounter their first obstacle. One of the strongest cause of it is because they fail to believe themselves. Believing in yourself is all about being sure that you are going to do whatever you want, even the others are against you. Usually , when you decide to take big challenge or to do something that
