A Recapitulation of Chapter #1 In the first chapter of The Bean Trees, the main character Taylor Greer (a.k.a Missy or Marietta) is introduced and begins her adventure. Taylor is a gallant, cordial, and courageous young woman that was raised in an agrarian sector of Kentucky. She decided to leave her hometown in a spontaneous manner, however, this didn’t go as well as she would’ve liked. During her move, she stopped in Oklahoma and ended up with a baby that was given to her by a stranger. The only thing she has in common with this baby is having Cherokee blood in their veins. Bean Trees Essay Prompt In the novel The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver the main character, Taylor, has changed exponentially as a person. Taylor grew up in a small town in Kentucky with only her mother to raise her. She was surrounded by people who were “scarecrows,” doing the same thing every day, never willing to change.
Taylor receives no explanation from the woman who leaves Turtle with her, yet Taylor still takes on huge responsibility of caring for the child. Then, Taylor starts to notice a lot of things that makes her wandering what happened with the little girl. Taylor starts noticing Turtle’s smile while she was bathing her, and she also discovers that Turtle has been sexually molested and abused. By discovering these details of Turtle’s life, Tylor want to know more about Turtle’s life. She start working, but Tylor keeps thinking about Turtle. Resilience is the key to defeating many life challenges. In the book, The Bean Trees, Esperanza shows immense amounts of resilience, which allows her to overcome many difficulties. Esperanza resilience is shown in many different situations. First, she moved from Guatemala to the United States without knowing English or any other language. Second, she had a hard life when she lived in Guatemala, which forced her to battle difficult emotions when she moved to the United States.

A Coherent Community Community is the bond between groups of people that solidifies our humanity and binds us together. Throughout the book the bean trees, there is an abundance of community as separate groups conjoin to a seemingly unlikely family. The characters bind together in the sense that they all contribute to make the group as a whole better. The most prominent characters that are guilty of helping others are Taylor, Lou Ann, Mattie, Estevan and Esperanza. One example of a family in the bean trees is Taylor and Lou Ann.
First, Treelore, Aibileen’s son, was tragically killed while working at the Scanlon-Taylor Mill where he was employed. Aibileen says, “He slipped off the loading dock, fell down on the drive. Tractor trailer didn’t see him and crushed his lungs…” (Stockett 3). Throughout the reading of The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver, I noticed a numerous amount of times where Lou Ann seemed to somewhat change her personality in some way or another and I started to wonder why throughout different situations in the novel, she would do this. As we all know, Lou Ann is one of the sweetest, well-mannered young lady in this novel who also has high respect and a lot of worrisome towards her family.
