She is the wife of Helmer and the mother of three children. On the surface, she plays the role of a naive housewife and her husband grants her the nicknames of “skylark”, “squirrel”, and “spendthrift”. Nora’s father is also recently deceased. She committed a crime by forging her father’s signature so she could take out a loan to save Torvald’s life. He is Nora’s husband and a bank manager. He supposedly handles all the money matters in the family. He can be frugal at times and accuses Nora of not being able to handle money. Nora is like a child to him and he intends to treat her as such. He is a lawyer who went to school with Torvald and clings to his job at the bank. In the end, the bell is a solution because the threat of Nora’s forgery being widely known is lifted. When Dr Rank is about to profess his love to Nora, Nora brings the lamp in to show the reality: that she is married to Rank's best friend and that he is dying. The light is again used to reveal information when Torvald finds out about Nora's forgery and Krogstad's blackmail. The plot’s twists and turns depend on the writing and reading of letters. Krogstad writes two letters: the first reveals Nora’s crime of forgery to Torvald; the second retracts his blackmail. These signify Nora’s lies. Eating macaroons appears to be an inconsequential action of little importance, but it is important to Nora that Helmer does not find out. It is also extremely important that he does not know about the forged signature and the illegal loan she acquired from Krogstad to save Helmer’s life. These lies are the roots of the problems in their marriage. The macaroons also symbolize a parent-child relationship. Nora gets scolded for little things like eating macaroons, which points out that they are not equals in their relationship. This also foreshadows Nora's final stand against Torvald. It creates a connection with Mrs. Linde and Dr. Rank who are aware that Nora is lying to Helmer when she says. This emphasizes the finality of Nora's decision to leave Helmer.
