Have you ever noticed how some people just stand out from the crowd? Like the clouds in the sky and blades of grass, people are all different. “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker has a good example of an interesting, unique character. Maggie is a young girl who is not only physically but also mentally scarred. The way the burning house, her stuck-up sister, and society affects Maggie makes her different from everyone else.
As long as evil existed unchecked in the town, it was Miss Strangeworth's duty to keep her town in check. In the story, “The Possibility of Evil”,by Shirley Jackson, the author addresses the ideas of a lady who writes letters to people telling them their evil in hope of them changing without the person knowing it is her who is writing the letters.Miss Strangeworth’s has a lot of characteristics, there’s only three that I would be able to describe her as organized, clever, and cruel.
The movie Girl, Interrupted is based on the memoir written by Susana Kaysen. In this film, Susana Kaysen, the main character is first introduced in the hospital where she was taken shortly after overdosing on aspirin and alcohol. Despite taking a whole bottle of aspirin and alcohol Susana claims that it was not a suicidal attempt. In the hospital scene, there is also evidence on Susana’s wrist that she is what is known as a “wrist banger”, Susana claims that she does this because there are no bones in her hands. Shortly after, Susana is evaluated by a family friend and former psychiatrist and is strongly encouraged to check herself into a mental institution not too far from her, by the name of Claymoore. At Claymoore, she is evaluated by psychiatrist Melvin Potts. He asks her why she took so much aspirin and she replies that she wanted to make the time jumps, depression, and wrist banging stop. Susana is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder once she arrives at Claymoore.
The artifact represents personal objects and meaningful moments, person influence on our own life. This will take in more about different culture, uniqueness, identity and values of our schoolmates and how they reflected in their life.
Right away after reading the first chapter, I knew a character who displayed a true sense of neighborliness and community was Dolores Driscoll. She always helped out with picking up kids for school, even when it was not in her salary. On page four paragraph two, Dolores says, “I started back in 1968, as a courtesy and convenience, with my own brand-new Dodge station wagon”. This shows a true sense of neighborliness because she was putting miles and wear and tear on her new car to help out other families, all while she was not even getting paid for it. Also, in the first paragraph on page six, Dolores says, “By staying away from the cutesy names, sticking with names that were slightly humorous, I was able to get the older kids to go along with
In The Red Parts: An Autobiography of a Trial, Maggie Nelson, the author tells the story about her aunt who was murdered in 1969 and how her family suffers through the reopening of the case. Maggie’s aunt, Jane Mixer, was found dead, shot in the back of the head twice, strangled, and then was left unceremoniously, abandoned in a cemetery. Because of the way Jane’s murder was presented, she was thought to be part of a killing spree. During the initial investigation, the police arrested a suspect in 1970 and he was sentenced to life in prison. In 2005 however, Maggie’s family got a call from a detective explaining that he might have a new lead in Jane’s murder and that the man that they originally arrested for it, was innocent after all. He had “every reason to believe [that] this case [was] moving swiftly towards a successful conclusion” (Nelson 1).
After Scout returns home from her first day of school, Atticus notices her sulking behavior. She confides in him that Miss Caroline punished her for explaining the Cunningham’s poor financial situation. Yet, due to the fact that Miss Caroline was new and unfamiliar to the townspeople, she only became confused and frustrated by Scout’s explanation. Atticus explains that “…They could not expect her to learn all Maycomb’s ways in one day, and we could not hold her responsible when she knew no better” (Lee 40). Miss Caroline’s ignorance compared to Scout’s knowledge demonstrates how what may come easy to some is actually harder to come by for others. Thus, it’s not fair to expect one to know something nobody had ever taught them. Instead, the use
If someone was asked the question “What is an American?”, how would he or she respond? Many might consider an American to be a person from the United States. However, some may discover a deeper meaning to this question and answer in a less literal way. The stories read in class from Unit One help the public to answer this puzzling question. Their description of American history gives insight about what the land was founded upon. Some impressions of the past are still seen in modern America. The common value of freedom by the Pilgrims, Olaudah Equiano, and fictional Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible and their need to fight for what they believe in, makes them very persistent people. When the Puritan Pilgrims and the slave Equiano came to America,
One person I would choose to be if I had to pick fictional or nonfictional, is Jessica Day, or Jess, from the T.V. show, New Girl. Jess has this certain personality that would clash with mine in a positive outlook. In the show, Jess is a teacher for elementary kids, and that I find pretty substantial. I remember when I was younger, I suggested to be a teacher as one of my professions and Jess was basically who I wanted to be when I first witnessed the show. She’s simple in the way her life is structured and how she decides to decipher her decisions. Jess’s personality--to me, I consider her bubbly, outgoing and somewhat blunt, or straight to the point.

Stacey and T.J have a lot of differences and contrast between their lifestyles, and their behaviour in the story. Stacey is a thirteen year old boy who acts as an adult and a child, and isn't so happy for this school year because his mother is the teacher. T.J is an oblivious thirteen year old troublemaker whose parents are sharecroppers for a man named Harlan granger, and brings lots of trouble to the Logan family in the story . They each are good friends, but in the middle of the book they start to have some issues with trusting each other. Stacey and T.J have many differences and contrast in the story that makes them unique from one being a troublemaker and a responsible person.
Often in situations when someone moves away from their home, they start to gain different personality traits in order to adapt to their new surroundings. In this case Leah Price realized her potential to be an independent person, found the courage to stand up for herself, fell in love, and found her purpose, all of which would not have happened if she were not in the Congo. “Many scientific researches have shown an obvious fact, that the behavior of a human being is created by the environment. If genes predispose a certain behavior but the environment doesn’t support it, then that behavior won’t manifest, so in this case, genes aren’t important. ”(TROM:
