The Message of Women Being Undermined, As Told in Petronella Jay Williams’s short story, entitled Petronella, is a quick read that, if one was to delve a little deeper, conveys many underlying problems in society. Everyday, people misjudge the value of a woman for no reason other than the fact that she is a woman. In the short story, Petronella, the author shows how women must go to greater lengths if they wish to achieve the same goals as men through usage of characterization, irony, and plot. The author of Petronella, Jay Williams, uses characterization to highlight the theme of women having to work harder than men. When the king and queen first discovered that their third child was a girl rather than the boy that they were expecting, they were less than thrilled to be breaking tradition. “‘Well,’ said the king gloomily…And what’s to be done about it, I’m sure I don’t know’” (55). This is showing that women were not appreciated in this society, and that even her family would never truly consider that she would be able to complete the task that her fathers had before her. Not only did Petronella’s parents doubt her, but her brothers did as well. Though it does seem like they were very fond of their baby sister, they still managed to underestimate her. Her eldest brother even said, “‘be reasonable, Pet. Stay home. Sooner or later a prince will turn up here’” whenever she wanted to join them on their journey (55).
