Mark Watney in the book, The Martian by Andy Weir stayed on Mars for over a year and a half. Alone and hopeless, from the day he was stranded to the day he left, it was a never ending struggle to survive taking a deep toll on him mentally and physically. Mark Watney’s personality and attitude never changed, he took the worse of situations and lightened them up, while still understanding fully of the seriousness of them. Traumatizing events and life threatening circumstances never even phased Watney, he kept the same positive attitude throughout the entirety of the novel resulting in him being a static character and making little change throughout the book. Mark Watney was brought onto Ares 3 (the mission to Mars) mostly because of his charisma. When put under pressure and tough situations, he deals with this by cracking jokes, ”Yes, of course duct tape works in a near vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.” During high stress moments, Watney is constantly making remarks like this quote. Being able to poke fun at a bad situation is Watney’s way of easing tension levels and making the best of bad situations. Having this charisma was crucial for giving Watney hope to keep pushing on each day, which is why he never changed, having any other personality would be counterproductive to his main goal of getting rescued. Being able to analysis whatever problem is thrown at him then from there ease stress from cracking jokes was Watney’s way of
If you were stranded in a desert with no form of communication, how would you handle the situation? In the fictional story titled The Martian written by Andy Weir, the main protagonist is an astronaut named Mark Watney. Mark is on Mars with the rest of the crew on Ares 3 collecting information to bring back home, when a severe sandstorm strikes and they abandoned the mission, but the rest of the crew on Ares 3 left Mark behind on Mars because they thought he had died in the storm. Throughout a duration of the story, Mark is faced with a plethora of external conflicts, but he perseveres and that perseverance eventually paid off when he makes it home safely. I believe the theme of this story is: having enough perseverance can get you

Ray Bradbury was an American author born on August 22, 1920 who died on June 5, 2012 at the age of 91. Bradbury was a prolific and beloved writer who wrote many novels considered today to be staples of the science fiction genre such as Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Martian Chronicles (www.biography.com). The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short stories Bradbury wrote over several years detailing the colonization of mars by humans. Present in this collection of stories are a number of themes portraying the weaknesses of mankind. In these stories are tales of corporate greed, mental illness, religious zealotry, gullible ignorance,
The movie, “The Martian,” by Ridley Scott is about an astronaut who’s trying to survive on an empty and lonely planet. The astronaut surviving on the planet Matt Damon, also known as Mark Watney. After his crew left him because they thought he was dead during a strong storm, Mark finds himself abandoned and lonely on a desolate planet. Mark try’s to send a message back to earth that he is still alive on the empty planet. NASA puts in non-stop work and fights to bring him back home. In the end, he returns back to Earth safely.
It starts of with stories of men from Earth trying to come to Mars. All of the men in the first three expeditions were killed by Martians with the help of their powers of telepathy and hallucinations. In the fourth expedition, the men found out that even though their men were killed, most of the Martian population was killed from chicken pox brought from Earth. A man named named Spender was upset with this news. He feared that if humans start settling in Mars, not only will the Martian race disappear but their beautiful culture with disappear also.
There are many times that Weir puts Watney in a situation that will certainly be the end for him, but he somehow finds an ingenious way to escape, which is excellent. To go along with Mark Watney, Weir creates many side characters that help Mark along the way. Aside from Watney, my favorite character is Mitch Henderson the flight Director for NASA. His job is to make sure the ccrew gets home safe, but also in the book he is the catalyst for brininging Watney home. His “I don’t care what you say” attitude shows up whenever he directly disobeys NASA’s orders for not telling the crew of Hermes 3, the people who left MArk behind, of a course maneuver that will send the Hermes back to Mars to save Mark. Along with Henderson some other characters are Venkat Kapoor who is the director of the Ares program. He doesn't like big speeches in fact, he refuses "to make a speech" about Mark because "nice words ... wouldn't bring him back" (5). Venkat is constantly trying to figure out what Watney is doing
The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a science-fiction book and was written in 1946. This major work by Bradbury is a collection of short stories relating to Mars or Martians. Bradbury had a clear vision of the Mars in which these stories are set. His vision was one of a fantasy world from the Martians point of view. In this work, the humans from Earth are the aliens from outer space. Bradbury has won many awards including the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Aviation-Space Writers Association Award, the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America. Bradbury supported his awards
Over the time their species has existed, humans haven’t changed. They have had the same greedy nature. They have repeated their behavior, history, and mistakes for thousands of years. Throughout The Martian Chronicles, Bradbury uses characters and events to express how humans don’t change in their repetition of behavior, history and mistakes.
The very first sentence of the book indicates how the rest of the story will unfold. Most of the time the reader skims over the first words of the book, but this quote is hard to ignore. “I’m pretty much f*****(1). “ It is an accurate feeling that the main character Mark Watney is experiencing, being left on Mars. Most Sci- Fiy authors would have toned down the amount of explicit language used by the doomed botanist. The author Andy Weir is doing something right by writing this way; he is expressing how Mark would actually be thinking is this situation.
The main idea is that Mark Watney gets stranded on Mars with no means of communication, as shown in this quote; “Everyone made it but me”(Weir 4). This is part of Mark telling the story of how he got stranded, and it lets readers know he is completely alone. That is the main struggle for Watney, but he faces numerous other huge challenges and technical issues, for example “I’m very lucky it hasn’t blown. Even a small static discharge would lead to my own private Hindenburg….. The Hab [ The “habitat” that the astronauts live in] is now a bomb” (Weir 37).
The beginning of this book starts with Mark Watney a mechanical engineer and botanist describing his current situation, how mars missions work and how he managed to get into his predicament of being stranded on mars alone. For some of the basics, he is on Aries 3 the third mission that has sent humans to mars. All of the use a really big ship to get there and back and by the time they get to mars 13 pre supply missions will have sent everything they will need onto the Martian ground.
On the surface, The Martian is a sci-fi drama about an astronaut stranded on Mars. Mark Watney was assumed dead during an extreme sand storm after sustaining life threatening injuries and damage to his space suit. The rest of the crew evacuated back to Earth, leaving Mark. However, he is able to repair his suit and return to the base, where he begins a series of scientific excursions to keep himself alive for the four or so years until the next Mars expedition, which is his only hope of rescue. Mark learns to grow potatoes in his new home, he creates water from scratch, and rebuilds various space ship equipment. This all sounds ridiculous and unrealistic, but entertaining. Since it is a science fiction novel, none of that is surprising. What
In the book The Martian, an astronaut named Mark Watney is thrown into an awful situation on Mars. A sandstorm had come in while they were landing the Ares 3. The crew needed to get out of this trouble. When trying to get back to safety, Mark is hit by debris and is not able to find his crew. His crew all successfully got back to the Mars ascent vehicle but Mark. The crew is taught to never leave a man behind. They search for him but the sandstorm created low visibility. They see that Mark's suit is damaged and he going to die. They are forced to abandon Mark on Mars. Throughout the book, Mark, NASA, and Mark's crew show no sign of giving up, and their tenacity to never quit even when obstacles are thrown their way.
Life is unpredictable and that is the beauty of science fiction; writers are able to create a world, which is plausible enough to engage an audience and suck them into a world they may have never experienced before reading that book. The human condition, in these very situations, becomes delicate and fragile even though real people have not lived through them because these sci-fi worlds relate to moments we all understand. The themes of fear, survival, persistence, resilience, and the power of the human spirit are undeniable experiences that transcends all cultural barriers and languages. All of these also hold true in the book The Martian, written by Andy Weir. Although all of these themes hold true in The Martian, the theme of ingenuity shows
Book The Martian is a novel about NASA astronaut Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer, who has been left stranded by his crew of the Ares 3 mission after they were forced to evacuate the red planet due to an intense dust storm and high winds. The main character – Mark Watney – is probably the most interesting of them all. What is so interesting about him is that he is a botanist and mechanical engineer, and how he uses these skills to survive on a planet with no food - just the man-made base built on Mars and the tools inside it. Another interesting character is the young NASA engineer who is getting very bored with her job, and even wants to quit sometimes, Mindy Park.
