He illustrates the appalling agony of the Irish civil war through a dramatic story of two brothers against each other in the war. Through the the author's writing, readers can conclude that the theme of The Sniper is that war destroys families. O’Flaherty sets emphasis on this theme by using many strong literary devices. A character trait is the aspect of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up their personality. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is known to have strong characterization. One of the most important characters is Atticus Finch, a highly respected lawyer in Macomb County and a father to Jem and Scout Finch. Two major character traits Atticus truly represents is compassion and understanding.

When an author writes a story, one will introduce, analyze, and describe a character in a way that pertains to his or her personal style. Often times, a character’s personal attributes and distinctive qualities are represented at the beginning of the plot line. O’Brien’s use of characterization especially that of Jimmy Cross, forces the reader to analyze the text in depth, so that many other observations can be made. Characterization is an important part of this passage because it forces the reader to critically think about the struggles that these men are facing. This is important because it truly depicts the mindset of the soldiers during war.

The sniper is undoubtedly a dynamic character. The author displays this through the plot, the sniper’s thoughts, and even states it directly. Liam O’ Flaherty wrote of the sniper being overwhelmed with penitence after defeating his opposition. In the story, the author directly stated how the sniper’s feelings had changed. Liam O’ Flaherty did this again when he wrote about the sniper feeling reckless after drinking from the whiskey flask.

The narrator also has many decisions that would affect him. His first and most important one comes with his encounter with the artilleryman. The first encounter is when the narrator is hiding at his house after returning the horse carriage. He then hears a knock on the door, he chooses to open this door which then reveals the artilleryman. This gives the narrator a companion and the helpful expertise and survive fulness that the soldier brings with him.

The narrator denies the accusations that he is mentally unstable, and begins to tell a tale to prove his sanity. The narrator remember his experience by being inspired to kill the old man who was living with him. One night, the narrator slips into the old man’s bedroom, removes him from his bed, and drags the bed over his body to kill him. He cuts him into pieces and buries the body under the floorboards. Later, the police come to question him, he is disturbed by the sound of the old man’s heart, which he perceives to be still beating beneath the floorboards. He is so disturbed that he confesses to some officers of the murder because of the loud heartbeats of the man’s heart, which symbolizes the narrator’s consciousness. In my opinion the sniper is a round character. There are various examples of him being a complex and very humane character throughout the story. In the beginning it states that he has the face of a student and is therefore quite young but despite that he’s a sniper who has no doubt killed others before. He later kills two nationalists with no remorse but after he kills the enemy sniper, the adrenaline from the battle leaves his body and he immediately becomes regretful. He is sickened by the body of the man he shot and he begins to curse the war. This shows a complex personality because although he is fighting for what he believes in, he doesn’t like the means to achieve them and the death of others.
