“Do not give up the beginning is always the hardest... keep moving forward !!!” - Riza Budiman. I want to inspire people. I want people to look at me and say, “Because of YOU, I didn't give up.” So no. I am not giving up, not for anything. It is not okay to give up even though you're going to lose.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch said, “I want you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see through it no matter what.” In what he said I think he meant that courage is not killing someone but fighting a fight even when you aren't sure if you're going to win or not. Mrs. Dubose was a morphine
“Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summer’s day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men’s stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o’clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum...There was no hurry, for there was no where to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb.” (Lee 6) In Harper Lee’s classic story To Kill a Mockingbird,
1. (56-59) Scout admires Ms. Maudie because she’s honest and kind to them, even though they are just children. On page 59, Harper Lee writes, “She had never told on us, had never played cat-and-mouse with us, she was not at all interested in out private lives. She was our friend.”
Harper Lee’s renowned book To Kill a Mockingbird is highly praised for the lessons it teaches, it’s persuasive humor and how it tells a story of growth. It tells the story of Scout Finch as she learns and and grows in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. Scout has a brother, Jem, who leads scout on adventures and through trials as they are taught about racism, empathy and courage. Scout's perspective allows a look into how growing up in her circumstances has affected her personally. (need another sentence here to lead to thesis) Harper Lee uses the characterization of Jem to show an alternate insight to growing up through the way he strays from being moral, how he tries to be more independent, and by when he reaches his breaking point.
Scout, in Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is surrounded by danger that can influence her badly. Scout’s friends make her feel awful by making fun of her since Atticus is supporting Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is an an African American man who is accused of raping a white women. Why would Scout want to go to back to school after being made fun of? Scout is not willing to go back to school, so she tries experimenting by acting differently during Christmas in the hopes that Atticus would stop making her go to school.
Jean Louise Finch (a.k.a Scout) is a 6-year-old little girl who is full of love and joy. She isn’t the most feminine girl in all of Maycomb County, but she has a heart that’s as large as the world. That is why I choose to include a heart in my illustration. Scout is also a kid, which is why I added the “3 Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf”, and the toy. To show that Scout is a little girl. Yet, she changes throughout the book. That’s why I added a butterfly. Butterflies transform from a caterpillar into themselves. Just like how Scout became more sophisticated across the book. Finally, to show even more change, I included a background of white transitioning to black. To display that Scout has permuted into a young lady in the duration of “To
While Maycomb is experiencing hard times, Scout and Jem has learned lessons, and people start to stand up for what they believe in.To demonstrate, Atticus was worrying about the case of Tom Robinson but Jem , “said Atticus didn’t worry about anything. Besides, the case never bothered us except about once a week and then it didn’t last”(Lee 156). This demonstrates that Atticus wants Scout and Jem to stay poised when handling challenging situations. The lesson he was trying to teach to them was to not be worrisome when things don’t go your way, rather figure things out and work around your problems. On another occasion,Scout realizes that after observing Mayella, she was, "the loneliest person in the world…she was sad I thought… when she stood
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses characterization through differences between Atticus and Aunt Alexandra to exhibit how a person’s thoughts and actions determine their character.
Particularly how Scout described Maycomb made me feel that the people residing there had no purpose. For example the phrases she uses such as “for there was nowhere to go” or “ nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County.”, depicted that the town was the only place to be at, that nothing was important outside of Maycomb.
“The ability to do something that frightens one.” This quotation shows that to have courage isn’t always when you are being brave but when you finish something that you start. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” By Harper Lee, Many characters show the trait of courage throughout the book. It also shows many important parts of the book through these quotes that are shown. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper lee Atticus shows the trait of courage a lot in the book. The next two quotes are ones that show that Jen is a person in the novel that shows the trait of courage when he tried to find boo. these quotes are ones that show that Dill has courage because he travelled by himself and because he he is a daredevil. In my three
In Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird,” Mayella Ewell, a young woman as well as the daughter of Bob Ewell, lives a life of insolence and isolation in the town of Maycomb. As a Ewell, which they are familiarized as being vulgar, uneducated, and indigent, Mayella is disrespected by the people of Maycomb as well as by her father. During the court case, Atticus shows courtesy towards Mayella by addressing her as a miss and a ma’am, which is not surprising for his values of equality. Mistaking his manners with sarcasm, she replies with, “Won’t answer a word you say as long as you keep mockin’ me” (pg.181). Harper Lee is demonstrating the amount of disregard Mayella faces in her life, so much that courtesy can’t be identified as just that. Mayella finds that Atticus is ridiculing her for what she doesn’t have, respect from others. With a reputation such as Mayella’s, people treat her like an outcast. Her lonely life can be a reason to explain why she always asked for Tom Robinson’s company, she wanted to experience friendship and perhaps love for the first time. Her loneliness was so clear to see, even Scout, who still has their childhood-innocent mind, can see through it. Scout compares Mr.Dolphus Raymond’s “mixed children” to Mayella because they both don’t know where to stand in their social class, “white people wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes wouldn’t have anything to do with her
In class we are reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I just finished reading chapters 16-23. The book is in Scouts perspective, and I think that it really helps when reading too see how Scout views a certain topic. It is a coming of age story and the two characters that are growing up are Scout and Jem. In this journal I will give information about a character named Tom Robinson, and my opinions on him. I will also be conveying my opinions oh why Mayella Ewell would have lie about the case.
Was Atticus Finch was the true hero of To Kill A Mockingbird? Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird narrates the journey of Scout Finch from an immature, feisty, close minded young girl, to a strong, brave and courageous girl that now knows the truth about Boo Radley the towns ‘freak’. Boo Radley is middle aged man who is known as a creep but by the end of the novel they realise that he is a nice man. Scout is the daughter of Maycomb's brave and courageous lawyer, Atticus Finch who defends Tom Robinson in a situation where he is being wrongly accused of rape. Through the eyes and experiences of Scout, Lee explores the themes of racism and justice but most notably to consider what it means to be a hero. Heroism is when you demonstrate great
"'Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy...That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'" (119) Reading the beginning of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, one would assume there is no connection with the title to the storyline. After delving deeper into the novel the connection becomes evident. The concept of the mockingbird is introduced when Scout is given a gun for Christmas, she is then told by her father that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scout dismisses this fact until it becomes relevant again, when someone in her life is compared to mockingbird after a life altering experience.
Can you recollect a person that you hate all the time? Is this person rude, not sociable, emotionally abusive, or just plain racist? In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the novel digs deep into the roots of Social Classes. One of these classes, in particular, is “White Trash.” “White Trash” is a class that has the poor white people that don’t contribute much to society and sometimes even make the society worse. There is one character that everyone loathes in Maycomb, and he is Mr. Ewell. Harper Lee portrays Mr. Ewell and his kids as uneducated, racist, murderous pigs because of three reasons. This family disrespects other members of the community in cruel ways, abuses their power by accusing a black man of rape, and tries to kill two
Imagine you are a lawyer tasked with an impossible case, and everybody in your community is against you, but still there is a shred of hope you cling to. What might that be you ask? That to which you cling are your morals. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch had been given the Tom Robinson case, where a black man was convicted of raping a white woman. As a single father of two children, he continues to reinforce his values throughout the trial and during his daunting task of raising his children. In To Kill A Mockingbird what Harper Lee suggests about the nature of morals is that you should try to stand up for what you believe in even if people oppose or reject your ideals. Even when faced with an insurmountable opposition you should stand up for your morals because in the end if your don't follow your beliefs you are just contributing to the problem. We should try to create a voice for what we believe in and impress that upon the next generation so they can continue to exercise their beliefs to make the world a better place.
