The two major areas or paradigms that need to be shifted, are the perceptions people hold of life as well as how they interact with the world around them. The author mentions these as the “Character Ethic and the Personality Ethic.” (Covey, 23) The character ethic are the things that we perceive to be how we see ourselves. An example would be a generous person or a person of integrity. The personality ethic is our worldviews and how we use that perception to interact with our world. These can be entrenched traits that can have a paradigm shift for change. As for the water, the analogy is given of two fish swimming in the water and an older fish says “how’s the water, the two fish say to each other, what the hell is water” (Dr. Sterken, Video Lecture) This is a great example of disconnect from our own environment. It is virtually impossible to change what we do not perceive as needing change, both about ourselves and the world around us. One of the biggest revelations this teaching brings about is the self-conditioning that we have naturally gone though. Professor Sterken says if perfectly in, “We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.” (Sterken, Video lecture) Getting out of ourselves long enough, will help us to see and do the changes necessary for personal paradigm shifts.

No two people are alike, and no two personalities are alike. A personality is made up of different characteristics, which help to define a person. Per the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator everyone has a four-letter personality type with 16 different personality combinations. These personality types affect everyone’s personal, social and work life. My four-letter personality type is ISFJ (introvert, sensing, feeling and judgment).
The second principle is Come out from Behind Yourself into the Conversation and Make it Real (p.67). While many fear "real," it is the unreal conversation that should scare us to death. Unreal conversations are expensive, for the individual and the organization. No one has to change but everyone has to have the conversations. When the conversation is real, the change occurs before the conversation is over. You are able to accomplish your goals in large part by making every conversation you have as real as possible (p. 64). It's important to take yourself seriously and take your life personally.
Morals, character, integrity, what do these words mean….actually, the question is, do you have them. A man named Dwight Moody once said, “Character is what you are in the dark.” You cannot see your morals, character, or integrity, these are only shown as your values. Someone could only show their own values, which are very important to themselves and everyone else. Integrity is the firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. The way you show your integrity, character, and morals or how they are effect you in either a negative or positive way. There are many causes to how your values are. So as you know, integrity is very important and it is important to have it.
We are presented with choices every day. Many are easy to make and cause very little stress, but some choices can be extremely difficult and have significant consequences. The difference between making the right choice or the wrong one is often determined be a persons character, which is based upon the qualities of integrity, responsibility, and honesty. Gaining an understanding of these three character traits and how to build them is critical to creating a lifetime of positive outcomes.
Guido describes ethics as “a process of determining right conduct from wrong” (para 2, p. 3). My personal view of ethics is along the same lines as this and has been instilled in me my entire life. My code of ethics includes respect for myself and others; honesty in my endeavors, graciousness in both my personal and professional lives, and accountable for my actions. I use nonmaleficence and beneficence in every aspect of my life. I also strive to honor the proverbial do unto others as they would do unto me.
“People act for many reasons; but for whom, or what, do or should they act—for themselves, for God, or for the good of the planet?” (Moseley) An egoist would argue that one acts for one’s own self. More specifically, an ethical egoist is one who thrives to improve ones own self being, with much respect to morality. Ethical Egoism is the theory that one should pursue his or her own interest above all the rest. It is the idea that all persons should act from their own self interest in relation to morality.
The humanistic perspective on personality deals exclusively with human behavior. Humanistic psychologists believe that human nature includes a natural drive towards personal growth, that humans have the freedom to choose what they do regardless of environmental factors, and humans are mostly conscious beings and are not controlled by unconscious needs and conflicts. They also believe that a person's subjective view of the world is more important than objective reality. Two of the humanistic theorists that have made an impact of humanism are Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow.
