Characteristics of Comedy
There are many characteristics that make up a comedy. Characteristics such as mistaken identity, battle of the sexes, and jumping to conclusions are what set the comedic story apart from the tragedy. Within a comedy, no matter how much fault, and dismay may appear within the story, there always seems to be the classic ending of “…and they all lived happily ever after…” Comedies capture the viewer with a sense of compassion and love for the characters in the story. Each character has their own essence, to which they pertain a flaw of some sorts, which the audience can relate to. With the relation to characters there is defiantly a certain interest that is grabbed by the actors, which sucks the audience into the

They are constantly bickering, and fighting amongst each other. The fighting is more of a battle of wits more so then malicious fighting with foul words. Once Benedict enters the city, Beatrice seems to challenge him with sly remarks questioning his manhood. In response to these comments, Benedict seems to throw his rebuttal in with the same amount of wittiness as displayed from Beatrice. Although it seems, that the two hate each other, it is obvious that it is the classic case of the girl on the schoolyard hitting the boy because she likes him. To tie this scenario in with another story, it is possible to find a battle of the sexes within the Star Wars Trilogy. When Princess Leia and Han Solo bicker and fight all the time, it seems like they have a dislike for each other. Yet it is apparent that the two have an uncontrollable desire to want each other. Even though you can see that they are complete opposites, both of them play a game of tag with a battle of wits shared back and forth throughout the whole time that they know each other. Although the story of Star Wars does not seem like a comedy, it is not a tragedy. In separate movies it can be interpreted as a comedy for Star Wars (A New Hope), a tragedy for The Empire Strikes Back, and then a comedy for The Return of the Jedi. As a whole within the story, the ending holds all the water showing that because the
Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful, is a film that is set in a concentration camp and combines comedy with the seriousness of the extermination of the Jews in Nazi Germany. Benigni’s task in making this film was significant, by taking a tremendous risk, making a “comedy about the Holocaust.” And the fact that he pulled it off so well, despite the expected controversy it has aroused in some quarters, is downright miraculous. Benigni initially accesses the emotions of his audience through simple comedy. And the film is a comic attack on Fascism.
Comedy is a type of entertainment that uses jokes and skits that are intended to make the audience laugh. In the short story, “Priscilla and the Wimps,” Monk Clutter had the school under control with his gang, the Klutters Kobras. Before Priscilla came, the gang would go around the school stealing kids lunch money from students. When Priscilla came, Monk had finally met his match. Richard Peck’s short comedy, “Priscilla and the Wimps” is a high level of comedy that uses comic characters, comic situations, and comic language to convey the importance of treating others the way you want to be treated.
The reason we still have theatre today is purely because of Roman and Greek dramas. Even just the term “play” comes from Latin’s “ludus” meaning to play. Nowaday we still use this entertainment to distract our people from surrounding issues. Comedy is
Comedy is able to remain captivating while working alongside complex characters and storylines, ultimately, placing comedy as a highly engaging genre.
Farce is a type of comedy that aims at entertaining the audience through situations that are highly exaggerated, extravagant, and thus violent (Johnson 1296, 1298). A good example of a farce comedy in Mean Girls is provided when highschool students are portrayed as animals trough the Cady’s perspective. Another example is presented then Regina was hit by a bus while talking to Cady, and instead of dying she survives. This is an improbable situation, because someone being hit by the bus would of died, but ashe after this Regina even goes to the nomination of Spring Queen. Violent jokes based on physical fighting are examples of farce comedy. A final example of Farce comedy in the film is when Ms. Norbury spilled coffee on herself so she removes her sweater in the classroom, by doing this, she accidently lifts up her undershirt revealing her bra. This is an exaggerated situation created to ilicet laugh from the audience. The movie Mean Girls has a romantic plot line as well. This means that. Cady was asks Aaron to help her with math even though she doesmt need it. This is her ploy to talk with her crush. The romantica in the movie made audience to get more interested with a plot. Humorous scenes in the movie were created because of romantica to grabs attention of audiences, and create more interest in
A comedic story can be summed up as one thing; a hero who triumphs over evil and wins the day. In these tales, our main character encounters around one hardship and overcomes it with much ease. The ancient Greek playwrights had a similar view on comedic tales: in order for something to be a comedy, the main character must reach a positive outcome. So no matter what comes their way, our hero will be in a better spot than he was at the beginning. Well-known comedies include A Midsummer Night 's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, and Cyrano de Bergerac. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew, the main character achieves their goal with few hardships. Yet, in Cyrano de Bergerac, our main character’s ambitions are never
It should be pointed out that the combination of drama and comedy is well balanced, that is to say the familiar and social drama and the comical
There are several aspects of a film that will make a good comedy. A good comedy needs well-rounded characters, adventure, and a love story. If a film has well-rounded characters the viewer can relate to them in some way. If a film has adventure there is never a dull moment that will lull the viewer to sleep, and it’s packed full of crazy obstacles the characters have to pull through. If there is a love story of some kind, serious or funny, it will keep the viewer interested throughout the entire film, and keep the viewer wondering what is going to happen in the end. When a comedy has these things it will surely be a good comedic film.
What is a comedy? According to a famous filmmaker, Woody Allen, thinks “Comedy is rather like a dessert, a bit like meringue.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream - a play written by William Shakespeare, is a comedy which talks about a love story between four lovers that live in Athens. Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia and Helena are all fighting for each other. The play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” written by Shakespeare, consisted of a lot of humorous situations, for example: When Titania fell in love with Bottom who had an ass; when Lysander suddenly fell in love with Helena, when Demetrius suddenly fell in love with Hermia. This essay is considered as a comedy, as it consists of exaggeration, irony, funny characters,
Two questions come to mind after reading the plays Sure Thing by David Ives and Beauty by Jane Martin. Is anything a "sure thing" and isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? These two playwrights bring up interesting topics of conversation. Comedy can be defined in different categories just like the two plays. I suggest that Sure Thing is farce and beauty is a satiric comedy. I think in order to make a successful comedy you need to incorporate the use of irony. Beauty and Sure Thing are proof of that “comedy is just tragedy without the sentimentality” because each character faces an obstacle and finds the irony in the end of their situations.
Generally comedies are characterized by jovial conclusion, obstacles to over come, and amplification of normal behavior. Comedies
Unlike Mankind where the vices are arguably more entertaining than either Mercy or Mankind it is likely that the audience would have been more favourable towards the character of Wit despite his foolishness and humorous failings at first. In this play the element of humour is not used solely for the ‘bad’ characters but for those representing ‘good’ as well. Wit is not as apathetic or pious as other leading characters at the time the plays performed were portrayed to be and as such was a more sympathetic character that the audience could have more easily identified with. For example, the downfall of Mankind would have been shocking and his attempted suicide considered blasphemy at the time and wholly inconceivable to audiences at the time whereas the folly of Wit was in a way more realistic to the audience and thus more relatable to those in the audiences. If it were possible for the audience to better relate to a character on a moral journey then the teachings of the plays, the moral messages of the church, could be more easily applied to their own lives and therefore arguably humour was indeed an effective tool for instruction at the time in some
In a comparison of comedy and tragedy, I will begin by looking at narrative. The narration in a comedy often involves union and togetherness as we see in the marriage scene at the end of Midsummer's Night Dream. William Hazlitt tells us that one can also expect incongruities, misunderstandings, and contradictions. I am reminded of the play The Importance of Being Ernest and the humor by way of mistaken identity. Sigmund Freud tells us to expect excess and exaggeration in comedy. Chekhov's Marriage Proposal displays this excess both in language and in movements. Charles Darwin insists that in a comedy "circumstances must not be of a momentous nature;" whereas, Northop Frye identifies
The conception of comedy has been around since the dawn of man; Aristophanes wrote comic plays dating back to 425 BCE, but as time progress so does comedy. The jokes and comics we see today have changed drastically since then, and have evolved into a new style of humor. Comedy is used by writers, playwrights, and everyday people to make life more enjoyable and cause the greatest feeling to man… Laughter.
* Romantic Comedy. Perhaps the most popular of all comic forms--both on stage and on screen--is the romantic comedy. In this genre the primary distinguishing feature is a love plot in which two sympathetic and well-matched lovers are united or reconciled. In a typical romantic comedy the two lovers tend to be young, likeable, and apparently meant for each other, yet they are kept apart by some complicating circumstance (e.g., class differences, parental interference; a previous girlfriend or boyfriend) until, surmounting all obstacles, they are finally wed. A wedding-bells, fairy-tale-style happy ending is practically mandatory. Examples: Much Ado about Nothing, Walt Disney 's Cinderella, Guys and Dolls, Sleepless in Seattle.
