It is hard to be a hero, just have to be selfless and put the needs or well being of others ahead of yourself own. Heroes also usually present themselves in times of need when nobody else does, which makes them stand out, because they are selfless and put other people ahead of themselves. Beowulf showed many signs of being a hero and also showed that he was selfless. A modern day hero that could be related to Beowulf who showed the same heroic traits is Martin Luther King JR.
One quality that a hero must possess is that they need to be selfless. They need to be selfless because they need to put other people before themselves. Beowulf was a hero and this quote shows how he is selfless when he volunteered to go help out Hrothgar and protect everyone; Raffell writes, “In his far off home Beowulf, Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world- heard how Grendel filled nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out, proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, now when help was needed” (23). The main thing that makes a hero is that they will go out of their way to help other people. Heroes need to present themselves in times of need and that is not something selfish people would usually do. They present themselves in times of need and sometimes even risk their lives to save other people. Someone cannot be selfish and be a hero because sure they could help people and do
Being a hero can mean many different things. A modern day hero might be someone who has a strong moral code or someone that has extraordinary powers and abilities but, looking back in time the meaning of a hero has changed slightly. During Anglo-Saxon times, being a hero meant being loyal to their lord and god, having a sense of duty, being selfless, having honor, being intelligent, and boasting. It also meant being brave and having courage, having a sense of justice, and having larger than life strength. A great example of an Anglo-Saxon hero is Beowulf from “Beowulf,” written by an unknown author. In this poem, Beowulf exemplifies the characteristics of an Anglo-Saxon hero because he was brave and courageous, he had superhuman strength, and he had a unique sense of justice.
Taylor DavisKathleen Orfanedes8 Feb. 2018Is Beowulf a Hero? I would consider a hero as someone who being very brave, loyal, one who never gives up, and one who protects or saves others. I believe Beowulf has all of these traits. Beowulf is a hero because he fought off a lot of people for a town of people he did not even know and had never even met. He even came across the seas for them. He is very loyal because he was willing to risk his life for Hrothgar’s people day in and day out. Due to Beowulf’s loyalty, super strength and bravery to come fight off people, many people would say he was a hero. Beowulf is loyal because he did not even hesitate to go fight a huge monster that nobody thought he had a chance against. He went across the sea to a new country and knew nobody there and went to go save all of their lives just
In society, there are many different types of heroes. Heroes throughout time have changed and from culture to culture they differ for example, in the early times they were defined as someone who will lead them into battle but now it's more about having a positive impact on other people and society as a whole. Although cultural heroes ultimately serve the purpose of solidifying the values of a particular culture, the ever changing, dynamic nature of heroism identifies itself as one who is selfless, relentless and brave. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, is a brave, well respected and selfless person that will do anything for the good of the people and he will even risk his life to protect them.
The first heroic characteristic that Beowulf presents is selflessness. Beowulf indicates selflessness throughout his life, such as when he meets king Hrothgar for the first time. Beowulf introduces himself than elucidate his rationale for the visit. “I alone….may purge all evil,” Beowulf exclaimed. Beowulf placed aside all of his fears and risked his life to help the Danes kill Grendel (Beowulf 431-432). According to the Epic
A good hero can be hard to find considering that there are many characteristics in being a hero. Someone willing to save others lives with no questions asked even if no reward is given. In the story Beowulf he is the stories main hero. He honors great strength and skill not only in battle but in himself.
The main traits of a hero are bravery, courage, and selflessness. Heros are there for his or her people to protect them whenever they are in danger or a crisis. Abraham Lincoln he willingly fought for the right for colored people. Some heroes do it for money and fame others do it out of good heart. In the epic poem Beowulf the main character Beowulf proves that he is a selfless hero by serving and protecting people before and after he is king.
Describe an epic hero. What traits would he/she have? Would those traits match the qualities heroes have in many works of literature? Perhaps your hero would match the qualities found in the epic “Beowulf.” In the story, Beowulf, the main character, fights many battles in the quest to be the ultimate hero. All of his traits make him the perfect hero.
Definition of a hero summed into my own words “a person who does selfless acts without thought of reward.” In the Story Of Beowulf all Beowulf wanted was accolades, because of that Beowulf died selfishly instead of dying as a true hero.
Some might say that these traits are unnecessary for a hero. They say being a hero merely involves killing a monster or winning a war. Violently, Beowulf slew three beasts. While this may be true, a hero possesses a better character than that. Some might say that to qualify as a hero you must be well known and accepted in society. Unsurprisingly, Beowulf’s fame was very renowned. While this statement is also true, a hero can be someone who nobody knows or somebody that died doing a very heroic action. Therefore, these two arguments are inadequate for the
What makes you who you are? Is it the clothes you wear or simply what you say. People can be identified in many ways but what makes anyone a hero? A hero is someone who does something out of selfness of themselves rather than for themselves. Simply by saving an old womens cat in the tree can signify you as a hero to her. But, how do you become a hero to the world? How about saving people from burning buildings or saving someone from a bad guy. Anyone can be classified as a hero but it is hard to be seen by the world as a hero. Look at the story of Beowulf. He was well known by everyone and very strong. He was shortly defeated by a dragon but, that doesn't mean he's doings die with him. He will be forever known for what he accomplished. All Beowulf wanted was to be seen by the world as a hero.
“I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.”-Maya Angelou. This quote is very relevant throughout the stories of Beowulf and Grendel. What does it take to be a hero? What type of people are usually heroes? What qualifies anyone to be a hero? These are just a few of the many questions that need to be kept in mind when trying to determine what makes a person a hero. Usually, when people think of the word “hero” it has a positive connotation, and is often times associated with super powered beings or humans with extraordinary skills, such as Superman or Wonder Woman. According to Merriam-Webster the definition of a hero is, “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with
What is a hero? A hero is someone who puts his or her own needs aside to do what is best for other people. There are numerous categories of people who fit this description of a hero today such as, firefighters who risk their lives by saving others from hazardous buildings, which shows they put other people before them. Also, any form of law enforcement is considered a hero because they put themselves in harm’s way in order to protect the general public. In the epic Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, proves that there is no hesitation that he is a hero.
Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero.
A hero is one who is not only strong, but one who uses his strength to uphold others. A hero is humble, philanthropic, magnanimous and selfless, a humanitarian at best. In the unprecedented epic Beowulf, the tale’s namesake exemplifies every characteristic befitting an Anglo-Saxon hero. He is honest, loyal, and courageous. He portrays these characteristics in the battle against Grendel, the affray with Grendel’s mother, and the fight against the dragon that inevitably ended his life.
Beowulf displays another trait which considers him a hero and that trait is loyalty. In ancient poems loyalty was one of the most important traits a hero could have. Beowulf was the key model of a hero so he
