When you think of the South one thing that must come to mind is the tall, moss covered oak trees still and quiet in the hot and wet summer sun. The weather in Louisiana is steamy! The slow moving days are laced with bright sunlight. It is almost tropical. The lady and I talked about the difference between the glorious light in Italy and that of the southern states. In Tennessee the big oak trees change colors and is a vacation spot in the fall. We then moved our conversation to a small café which, of course, brought up food.
Introduction Maintaining ecological diversity is necessary for the survival of a biological community. In the United States, American citizens are on the verge of irrevocably damaging one of the country's most unique and diverse treasures - the Florida Everglades. This national park is now the only remaining patch of a river that used to span 120 miles from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Bay. Dikes and levees created by the Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1940's drained this river to reduce flooding and increase useable water for the development of the region. This major diversion of water lead to a trickle down effect causing the continual decline of the environmental state of the Everglades. Since then, debates over the

In the North of the physiographic region, the winters are long and the summers are short and cool whereas in the South, the the winters are harsh with little precipitation and long summers. Although the humid weather and the flat lands create an ideal place to grow crops like wheat and corn, the growing season itself is quite short, even in the southern region due to the lack of precipitation needed for diversified crops to flourish. The flat prairies east to the Rockies is a meeting ground for Arctic, Pacific and

The Florida Everglades The Florida Everglades have been adversely impacted for decades because of human attempts to control this historical ‘River of Grass’. The reason for our insistence on attempting to control and manage the area can be defined in one word: water. There has always been plenty of water available within the Everglades’ ecosystem, but no logical way to extract it. Our extraction efforts eventually led to devastating results. My paper will focus on the initial policy and practices involved in the extensive downgrading of this once biologically unequaled ecosystem; as well as discuss recent policy initiatives that have been implemented in order to restore the Everglades to its once magnificent status. I will attempt
