F. Scott Fitzgerald, born September 24, 1896 in St. Louis of Minnesota, showed many characteristics of a writer. He loved to tell stories, and many say that he was good at it too. His family was a middle class family, but Fitzgerald wanted more (Mizener). He wanted to be wealthy. In fact, when talking about his life experiences Fitzgerald quoted on saying “[I always felt like] a poor boy in a rich town; a poor boy in a rich boy 's school; a poor boy in a rich man 's club at Princeton […]” (Koster 14). He envied the rich, and wanted to be them. Unfortunately for Fitzgerald, he wasn’t borne into this lifestyle. His mother came from an Irish- Catholic family that made a good amount of money as wholesale grocers, but his father hoped from job to job causing the his family to constantly move in the first decade of his life. Eventually, the family moved back to St. Paul to live off his mother’s inheritance. Fitzgerald attended St. Paul Academy; it was here that Fitzgerald published his write piece of writing ("F. Scott Fitzgerald."). Seeing his talent, his parents then sent him to a prestigious Catholic preparatory school in New Jersey called Newman school a few years later. His mother was always proud of her son, but Fitzgerald did not feel the same. He was ashamed of his mother. Fitzgerald wanted a young and elegant mother, but Mary McQuillian, who married at thirty, did not care much for her own appearance.
