Atticus Finch, a intelligent, confident, leader who is sadly widowed with two children named Jem and Scout. Mr. Finch is a lawyer in addition to being an older father in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. In the small town, the children are raised a certain way except for the Finch children. Most of the town disagrees with Mr. Finch’s parenting style, but he is raising them the way all children should be raised. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus taught his children to not let anyone stop them from what they strongly believe in, that people can be cruel, and that everyone is equal no matter what race or gender they are. One of Atticus’s teaching methods is that he taught his children to not let anyone stop them. The story emphasizes, “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it-whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is” (Lee 220). Mr. Finch tells Jem and Scout to not judge someone by their appearance. Their personality is the only trait that matters. There race, lifestyle, or appearance shouldn’t affect the way they are treated. All people are created equal and should be treated equally. Everyone should have the same opportunities and should be allowed to take them. Others of a different race, religion, or gender shouldn’t hold them back because everyone deserves to have new experiences. He also taught them that people always take advantage of another. It is extremely wrong to take advantage of those of a different race, gender, age, or religion since they may be at a disadvantage.
