Does beowulf the hero fit into the model of an charismatic leader? One have to think how beowulf shows the right acts of being a leader or hero and what qualities he have to shows to prove himself as an charismatic leader. The authors Tom Loughman and John Finley of the article ’Beowulf and the teaching of leadership’ shows us great facts that shown us how beowulf is an leader. This article gave me such good examples and other sources that compare to beowulf also how he show as a leader. Furthermore Beowulf is seen as an ideal warrior hero where his comrades willingly scram with him. In my opinion this article was helpful in some ways but I does it shows if that Beowulf is an or isn’t an charismatic leader.
In the epic poem Beowulf he is Consider a lot of things. Like a leader he is shown as someone that lead to a right path and makes good decision and who looks up to their ‘lord’ and who are them their are his follower they are reliance to their leader and what’s to know how they can be like them. In the article of Tom and John they show it state that in conger and kanungos (1994) chartistmais leader model it said that ‘there are three stages to an charismatic leader’ and to me only one shows a connection to Beowulf and that’s ‘Implementation’ he does get into personal risk and acts subordinates interpret like the text said. I do agree to that and it is not the first type thinker like when he says he would be do it no matter how dangerous he would do it and even thinking twice. Furthermore in the journal of leadership everyone is counting on Beowulf to defeat the Dragon, in my eyes I don’t think a man in his late 70 shouldn’t be fighting a monster like that. But why do Beowulf thing he can do that to keep his honor or to prove he is still implementation to do such things like that. Well in Tom and John article they said that Beowulf was an very model of the warrior hero and that he have so much confidence in his ability to lead them. Anyways the thing that caught my attention was in the text was different then the article was that in the textbook the other source it said that Beowulf had too much confidence in himself thinking he can beat the dragon for example it stand that ‘no one else
Beowulf, the main character of the heroic epic poem Beowulf, conveys fundamental examples for leaders in many aspects of life. Many of the stated ideals are pertinent to a leaders time as a warrior and as a king. In the beginning of the story, Beowulf, the hero of the Geats, aids the Danes and King Hrothgar whose people are harassed by a demon, Grendel. After Beowulf destroys Grendel and his mother, he returns to Heorot, the court of Hrothgar, for a feast of happiness. Here, King Hrothgar gives a speech that advises Beowulf how he should lead his people in the future. Hrothgar’s advice to Beowulf details how he should be the protector of his people and lead them with truth, justice, and tradition as the
In the epic poem of Beowulf, many leadership skills and attributes are demonstrated. Beowulf, as the leader of his band of warriors, makes the evidence of excellent leadership skills clear. He sets an example for his band by being a protector of his people in which, he came to them in a time of need (McArthur). He also upholds the standards of truth and justice by taking the life of Grendel (McArthur). Beowulf also leads his band by having an inspirational vision through his behavior and actions (Loughman). His confidence in his abilities is another factor that plays into his role as a leader (Loughman).
Beowulf is a model of leadership for our own times because he is very courageous and his strength is super human like. His skills and traits would not be good in our times though because a leader of a nation in our time doesn’t need to be very courageous and very strong to fight off people or go to war.
Beowulf does not undergo much character development considering what he goes through. His personality and leadership traits remain static throughout the story unlike most other stories that involve a similar plotline. This both shows great strength as well as the inability to change which is often considered a weakness if this stillness is viewed without context. In the case of Beowulf this primarily brings out his strengths as a hero and allows the story to move at a quicker rate and not focus on character development, but on other aspects of the poem, this being the alliteration and beauty in the writing far beyond the plot itself. Beowulf is a consistently strong warrior that stays honorable through the poem, but just increases his levels of glory through each enemy defeated as well as each year of peace after he attains a full level of sovereignty.
A great leader is able to recognize his limitations and how to overcome them. In the case of Beowulf, King Hrothgar foreshadows what is to come for Beowulf if he continues down the same path a previous king had gone. In his sermon, Hrothgar informs Beowulf of Heremod, a “pariah king who cut himself off from his own kind” (McArthur). Hrothgar says that God “allows the mind of a man of distinguished birth to follow its bent,” and because of this, cruel and greedy Heremod “forgets that it will ever end for him,” and “he ignores the shape of things to come” (McArthur). Warning Beowulf not to become like Heremod, Hrothgar advises him to “not give way to pride,” and that “for a brief while your strength is in bloom
Beowulf’s most seen quality in this epic is his confidence. The scene that most directly shows his confidence is his famous boast. “So, every elder and experienced councilman/ among my people supported my resolve/ to come here to you, King Hrothgar, / because all knew of my awesome strength. / They had seen me boltered in the blood of enemies/ when I battled and bound five beasts, / raided a troll-nest and in the night-sea/ slaughtered sea-brutes…” (Heaney lines 415-422). Beowulf’s boast is said publically, which shows an inspirational sense of confidence to defeat Grendel. The boast also demonstrates Beowulf’s courage and brave characteristics that makes him appear very heroic. Furthermore, Beowulf’s promise to kill Grendel to the Danes is a confident and risky thing to do, but Beowulf is able to pull it off. In Forbes article, it states that good leaders need to “deliver on [their] promises. Which our hero does that very night, killing the beast by ripping him apart ‘The monster’s whole/ body was in pain, a tremendous wound/ appeared on his shoulder’” (Forbes).
A huge part of being a charismatic leader is contributing acknowledgement to who ever deserves it. Also to not subsidize all pride to him self, but Beowulf was not that kind. In the story Beowulf states, “No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster. No one could try. And this dragon's treasure, his gold and everything hidden in that tower, will be mine or war will sweep me to a bitter death!” pg. 63”. This quote illustrates Beowulf desires all the glory to him self and he contemplates that no one else
Beowulf displays the qualities of a good leader that were mentioned in the speech given by Hrothgar. The speech speaking of the vices and virtues of great political leaders contains many of the same qualities that Beowulf embodies. His boastfulness, generosity and kindness are evidence that he is a good leader and provides for his people. Although the qualities he posses may not be the best-fit qualities of a common man, they are admirable qualities of a strong leader.
In the book Beowulf, Beowulf, the main character, is a man of great strength and ability. He is depicted as a man of wisdom, and that he is a prince that comes from a kingdom that is well respected. He fights many battles, and is seen as a hero with glory to his name, but this does not mean that he is as flawless as he seems to be. Beowulf is a man who desires to help those in need, however, he is greedy for the glory and treasure that he will receive in thanks of his success. He is truly confident, but because of this he is impulsive, never questioning his ability to take on a task. He is also brave, he has almost no fear, but this tends to make him reckless. He is a hero to many, but he believes in himself in such a way that he acts foolishly, and it will eventually be the death of him.
In the 21st century a good leader is someone who is courageous, understanding, selfless, fights for other and not themselves and not a person who has a big ego. Throughout history the meaning or definition of a good leader has changed much. In the Anglo – Saxon time period, Beowulf, was considered to be a great leader and a hero according to his people, for risking his life and saving them from evil monsters. But in today’s world and lifestyle and how much things and times have changed, Beowulf would not be considered to be a good leader or a hero.
Beowulf exhibits many obvious heroic qualities, such as his strength and confidence in battle. These along with more subtle diplomatic actions serve to define him as both a great warrior and leader.
Beowulf is a story of a fearless hero named Beowulf who has many different traits, some good while some bad. His courage and pride make up his good traits, while his greedy strive for glory and being extremely cocky make up his bad. In my opinion, Beowulf manages to stay a static character throughout the epic poem, his character doesn't change even when he is a very old man. In the battle of Grendel, we see a very confident and prideful Beowulf, who brags about his power and might before the battle. Though he did not get the chance to take Grendel on one on one due to the monster's ambush, Beowulf still managed to kill Grendel, showing his immense courage and fearlessness. We see this from Beowulf throughout the entire story and with many events.
Beowulf to me is a great king and leader. He’s a very strong individual. He also has honor and bravery too. He protects and fights no matter what the outcome is. He has three traits a king should have, he’s strong, has bravery and honor.
The poem, Beowulf, shows many examples of leadership. Beowulf would be the first ideal “leader” to come to mind. Throughout the poem he chooses to be an effective king, defend his people and be a brilliant warrior. We all want good leaders in our lives, but knowing what makes a good leader can be hard to figure out in certain situations. A leader should be able to guide you in the right direction and show characteristics that you would want to grow to be. The men who were leaders in Beowulf showed many characteristics of loyalty, charismatic and bravery.
In the passage, Beowulf as Charismatic Leader, the authors, Tom Loughman and John Finely, expressed how Beowulf fits into the Conger-Kanungo charismatic leader model. Beowulf Leads with Inspiration and Vision. He is absolutely fearless and supremely confident in his own abilities. The boasts he makes before the fight with Grendel signal a public, inspirational articulation of confidence in his own and in his companions’ abilities to overcome adversity in the form of the monster (p. 159). In his three contests with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the
