1. An Brief Introduction to The Middle Ages
Middle ages or medieval period was between the fall of Rome in 476 CE and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 14th century. This period can be analyzed from many perspective such as theology, art and literature and philosophy. Ideas, philosophies and works effect the following eras with it’s distinctive characteristics.
1.1 Art and Literature
Art was religious in the middle ages. Art was used for teaching the religion. The religion was explained by using literature and theatre. The Eastern Orthodox Church created the Middle Ages art. Scholasticism combined Logic, Metaphysics and semantics into one discipline, and is generally recognised to have developed our understanding of Logic significantly. Scholasticism is best known for its application in medieval Christian theology, especially in attempts to reconcile the philosophy of the ancient classical philosophers particularly Aristotle with Christian theology. There are perhaps six main characteristic features of Scholasticism. Firstly, there is an acceptance of the authority of Catholic orthodoxy. Within this orthodoxy, an acceptance of Aristotle as a greater philosopher than Plato. Third feature is the recognition that Aristotle and Plato disagreed about the notion of universals, and that this was a important question to resolve. Giving prominence to dialectical thinking and syllogistic reasoning. It claims that the distinction between "natural" and "revealed" theology is one of these features. Last feature is a tendency to dispute everything at great length and in minute detail, often involving word-play. In medieval period, there was Aristoteles’s rationalism philosophy. Scholasticism combined philosophy and theory as a science. Main thesis of scholasticism was harmony of wisdom and belief. Scholasticism wanted to explain miracles of Christianity by human mind.
