Ecosystems services are essentially services or resources an environmental system, or network of interdependent components, provides. In this broad category, however, there are four, main services. First, provisioning services are the products obtained from an ecosystem. These products include any type of fuel utilized for work, for example, food (sea food and game), crops, energy, and raw materials (skins, lumber, minerals, etc.). Simple, yet vital elements such as carbon dioxide and oxygen are also gathered from plants after photosynthesis. These provisioning services may be harvested by humans as in the case of crops such as corn or oranges, or by animals such as honeybees gather honey. Fourth, cultural services are the nonmaterial benefits people obtain from an environment. These include the spiritual or historical symbolism or enrichment humans find in nature for religion a connection to their lives. More predominantly, however, cultural services include use of natural areas for scientific development/experiments, education, or recreational activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, or national forests such as Rocky Mountain National Park or Mount Rushmore. 2. Please define the terms sustainability and sustainable development. Then list and explain some of the concerns we had as a class regarding these concepts. Sustainability is the search for long-term economic, social, and ecological stability and human progress. Sustainable development, however, implies meeting the needs of the present or current generations of people without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. So essentially, continued progress in a way, which will not detract or eliminate the possibility of a future. Both sustainability and sustainable development are excellent concepts, implying that actions and progress of humanity can continue. However, in class, we asked, “sustainable for who?” Ultimately, the people of the United States consist of only 5% of the world’s population, yet we utilize nearly 25% of the world’s resources. To make the American Dream or lifestyle sustainable for all 7 billion people living on the earth would be impossible,
